  • “Monument of Madonna embracing the Cross in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome”…<br />

The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, Saint Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. I found Saint Mary in a spectacular monument to Cardinal Agostino Favoriti, 1685, by Filippo Carcani. The famous 17th-century cardinal is shown seated at a desk behind large allegorical figures of Fortitude (with the lion) and Saint Mary representing religion. Of the very large monument, Mother Mary stood out to me, as one cannot help feeling blessed by her compassionate presence, and the luminescent glow of light gently descending upon her face, revealing her abiding love for her precious son. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about Pope John Paul II of suffering and his love of the Holy Mother; “in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing Urbi et Orbi (‘to the city and the world’). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

  • "Waiting along the canal near the parish of Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari Venice"...<br />

 The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

In 1630, ravaged by the Bubonic Plague, Venice vowed to build this church to honor the Virgin Mary if they were spared. Its exterior is grand, reflecting Venice's history, while inside, it's serene and simple. La Salute stands as a symbol of faith and resilience, a testament to humanity's ability to find hope even in the darkest times."

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of St. Mary of Health), commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite small interiorly. I am not sure if it was ever an active parish but more of a shrine with little room for seating. The steps wrapping around the front and sides make a perfect destination for relaxation during warm Venetian days. Interior windows open to the sky which allows for a great deal of sunlight, and as I meandered around I noticed a beautiful crucifix near the confessional. The strong rays of sunshine illuminated the face of Christ just enough to encourage one to examine their conscience one last time before entering into Sacrament of Confession.

  • “The Church of Santa Maddalena is surrounded by Roe Deer, both enjoying the sunset over the Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

The Church of St. Magdalene resides in a small village located in the Dolomites of Italy. Both, the village and the church, are symbols of the Val di Funes. This tiny picturesque village of just 377 people is located in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Northern Italy. Historically, the church was built where the miraculous image of Santa Maddalena was washed up by the Fopal River. Saint Mary Magdalene church is mentioned beginning in 1394. The current form of the nave with a sloping base and a slightly grooved roof cornice, with pear and round bar on the pointed arch portal with a red chalk inscription, was complete in 1492. The mural exterior is the Crucifix on the gable in a niche with a donkey's back, weather-beaten, early XVI century. St. Christopher is lively and virtuoso in movement with a fluttering, wrinkled robe. Interiorly, the keystones on the vault, are bust portraits of Mary with the Christ Child and saints. The valley, as you can see, Val di Funes is stunningly beautiful. Summer, it’s very green and dotted with colorful flowers. Winter, it’s covered with snow, and the ragged Dolomite peaks, pierce the sky toward the heavens. Mary Magdalene is the first among the women following Jesus to proclaim Him as having overcome death. She is the first to announce the joyful message of Easter. But she also proved she was among those who loved Him most when she stood at the foot of the Cross on Mount Calvary together with Mary, His Mother, and the disciple, St. John. She did not deny him or run away in fear as the other disciples did, but remained close to Him every moment, up to and including the tomb. The Italian Roe Deer rejoice in the beauty of God’s creation.

  • “Cybo Chapel - Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo Rome”…<br />

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. The Basilica is comprised of great works by many of the preeminent artists, such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat, and Donato Bramante. “Cappella Cybo” is the second side chapel in the right-hand aisle of the Basilica, which is famous for the beauty of its paintings, the preciousness of marble revetments covering its Bellissimo walls, and the renowned importance of the artists involved in its construction. The chapel is regarded as one of the most significant sacral monuments erected in Rome in the last quarter of the 17th century. The huge altarpiece, painted with oil on the wall, is one of the most important works of Carlo Maratta, finished in 1686. It depicts the Disputation over the Immaculate Conception with the Four Doctors of the Church, St Augustine, John Chrysostom, John the Evangelist, and Gregory the Great celebrating the purity of the Virgin. I knew in advance of the great Caravaggio paintings, especially the “Crucifixion of Peter;” however, I was not prepared for the security guard blocking the doorway and turning off the light to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. The guard courageously kept a watchful eye on everyone with a camera to protect the integrity of the incredibly famous artwork. I edged to the back, peered around the corner with a telephoto lens, and prevailed with a few pictures from a distance of the famous paintings just for my viewing pleasure. However, as I returned home and upon making a close inspection of the pictures, it was not the Caravaggios I had coveted, but an imposter. The guard blocked the shallow entrance and within a few steps inside, to the right and left ...the Caravaggios hid from view as if to tell me to try yet another day.

  • "Madonna in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo Rome"... <br />

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. Forgoing the Coliseum, we aimed for Piazza del Popolo. Encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. As I vacillated forward, a dark, but luminous statue absorbed by sunlight appeared to gaze upon me with precocious compassion. Her motherly expression offered a perception of love and gratitude. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture.

  • “Titian - Assumption of the Virgin under the Crucifix in the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa of the Frari Venice”…<br />

This image is perhaps one of the most difficult to actualize in my young vocation in Fine/Sacred Art. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation is a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, artistic brilliance, and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century, initially built of brick (like many Franciscan churches designed for preaching to large crowds, but now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs.) The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting in oils by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and is necessitated by the large church, having a considerable distance between the altar and the congregation. It marked a new direction in Titian's style that reflected his awareness of the developments in High Renaissance painting further south, in Florence and Rome by artists including Raphael and Michelangelo.  Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

During my first visit to Rome, I was captivated by the grandeur of The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, a true gem among Roman churches. This sacred place holds invaluable treasures, representing the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. It has stood as a remarkable Marian shrine for over sixteen centuries, drawing pilgrims from all corners of the world who seek to immerse themselves in the Basilica's beauty, holiness, and splendor. One of the most awe-inspiring features is the mosaic in the central apse, dating back to the late 13th century. Here, Mary and Jesus are gracefully enthroned at the center of the half-dome, surrounded by four-pointed windows, an early example of Gothic architecture in Rome. As you explore the museum, you will encounter numerous treasures that beautifully blend art and spirituality, offering a unique opportunity to contemplate the divine works inspired by man. The exquisite apse mosaic, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, holds a profound significance. It was created by the talented Franciscan friar, Jacopo Torriti, and portrays Mary as both a queen and a mother. At the Annunciation, as Mary learns of her divine calling to be the Mother of Jesus, her path to both queenship and motherhood ignites. The Archangel Gabriel reveals that her Son will reign on the eternal throne of David, making Mary the queen. Her motherhood and queenship harmoniously intertwine from that very moment. With its rich history and spiritual ambiance, St. Mary Major invites visitors to experience the union of art and devotion, leaving an impression on all who step into its sacred embrace.

The transcendent and inspiring Regina Pacis and the Christ child is a 20th-century statue of the ‘Queen of Peace’ commissioned by Pope Benedict XV in commemoration of the end of the First World War. “Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.   • “Saint Joseph and Baby Jesus - Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi and Venice - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi is located outside the first city walls, in Piazza del Vescovado. It was the heart of the medieval bishop's citadel and center of religious power until the 11th century when it gave the title of the Cathedral to San Rufino. According to tradition, the first Cathedral of Assisi was built in this site close to the Roman city walls in the 4th century. The crypt under the apse of the present church, which is the oldest surviving part of the structure, seems to date to the 9th or 10th century. St. Francis was baptized in the temple. The interior has a basilica plan with three naves, separated by pillars. In the early Middle Ages, it was an episcopal residence. In 1035, at the time of Bishop Ugone, the title of Cathedral was transferred from Santa Maria Maggiore to the church of San Rufino, where the relics of the patron saint were kept. San Francesco was a guest of Bishop Guido I several times in the adjacent Palazzo Vescovile, in front of which he stripped off his clothes, nurturing a special bond with the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. A stone outside the apse bears witness to works carried out at the time of Francis and Bishop Guido in the year 1216. I found the ancient church to be uncomplicated, yet comforting and reverent.   • “Crucifixion beyond the entrance to the Abbey of Santa Giustina – Padua”…<br />

Our Pilgrimage finally arrived in Padua and after lunch, we discovered the Abbey of Santa Giustina attached to the Basilica built in the 6th century. It contains the relics of multiple saints (including those of St. Luke the Evangelist). Shaped in the form of a Latin cross, the prodigious Basilica of St. Giustina is one of the most colossal in all of Christianity. The grandeur of the building is enhanced by the Prato della Valle which it overlooks. There are 3 main chapels: the presbytery and 2 chapels for Saints Luke and Matthew that form the transepts and each aisle has six small chapels. The Abbey and the Basilica of St. Anthony were two of my foremost surprises and a must-see on a Pilgrimage to Italy. Unfortunately, pictures were allowed only in St. Giustina, but not in the latter. Initially, I was a bit overwhelmed at the imposing wide open space of the Basilica. The high altar seemed an eternity away. It is difficult to give one a perspective of just how spacious and immense many of these basilicas can be, not only in pictures but in words. The colorful geometric marble floor leads one to the main altar, but only adds to the great depth, size, and dimension of the Basilica. A curiously placed Crucifix standing about 6’ tall is located just inside the colossal nave and appears diminutive below the 26 pillars supporting the 8 cupolas. As most basilicas are traditionally dark depending on the sunlight, the Crucifix was almost a complete faint silhouette only lit by the dome windows above the altar. Standing as close as possible with a telephoto perspective, I was able to reverse the impression of size and portray the grandiosity Christ deserves, as well as the original artist. The distant window light bled over the body and illuminated the darkness. The glow of the original beauty has become radiant. Framed by the brilliant distant archways, the Crucifixion becomes transformed.

  • "Light from Heaven - Sistine Chapel - Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Rome"... <br />

After Mass in the Crucifix Chapel on the second morning of the inaugural Pilgrimage I organized, we were joined by our Roman tour guide for the day. As we listened and ventured around the glorious Basilica, my eyes and camera began to wander. I became stupefied by the grand chapel to the right of the main altar with the rising sun peering through the window just below the cupola. I discreetly wandered in and out in hopes it would shine upon the Holy Crib. On my 4th attempt, my judicious endeavor was rewarded. A young woman in a splendid white dress walked directly into the heavenly light. Her luminescence and celestial reverence gave the appearance of a wondrous and radiant angel in admiration of the sacred relic. The right transept is called the Sistine Chapel, containing the elaborate tomb of Pope Sixtus V (1521-90) and decorated with frescoes and reliefs of events from his reign. The chapel centers on a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib, and the burial place of Saint Jerome, the 4th-century Doctor of the Church. The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of man inspired by God.

Our Lady of the Rosary feast was instituted to honor Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory. The Rosary, or the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the best prayers to Mary, the Mother of God. Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever gained over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted in the Litany of Loretto. At Belgrade, the Turks were defeated on the Feast of Our Lady ad Nives in 1716. A second victory gained that year on the Octave of the Assumption determined Pope Clement XI to command the Feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church. Leo XIII added the invocation "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loretto. The Feast is in reality a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen. In modern times successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings down God’s blessing on the Church. It is a biblically inspired prayer that is centered on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity.

In history's tapestry, Clare of Assisi shines, woven with devotion and courage. An Italian luminary, she danced with Francis of Assisi, etching sanctity. A beacon of feminine spirituality, she unfurled the Order of Poor Clares, a sanctuary in the Franciscan tradition. At eighteen, beneath Lenten skies, Clare's heart was ignited by Francis' words. Swift as moonlight, she met him at the altar. In the night, she shed her locks and worldly trappings, adorned with Francis' tunic – her emblem of consecration. With courage, Clare embraced Assisi's San Damiano sanctuary. Her days, were an eloquent symphony of service, tending the ailing and washing beguiling nuns' feet. Her visage, radiant as dawn, bore witness to her communion with the divine. Amidst turmoil, a prayerful fortress arose. The Blessed Sacrament adorned walls, a plea against marauding Saracens. "O God, do these defenseless hearts find solace?" Her words echoed with faith, sisters found solace in her whispered exhortations: "Fear not. Trust Jesus." Saracens fled before her resolute faith. Clare transcended grace in her passing. Beside her, a brother heard her final refrain: "In my tapestry, pain found no dwelling, His light illuminated my steps." This legacy ignited a spark within me, brush to canvas, spirit to flight, honoring Clare's devotion.

  • “Chapel of St. Maximilian Kolbe - Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari - Venice Italy”…<br />

As they were being marched away to the starvation bunkers, Number 16670 dared to step from the line. “I would like to take that man’s place. He has a wife and children.” “Who are you?”  “A priest.” No name, no mention of fame. Silence. The commandant, dumbfounded, perhaps with a fleeting thought of history, kicked Sergeant Francis Gajowniczek out of line and ordered Fr. Kolbe to go with the nine. In the “block of death,” they were ordered to strip naked, and their slow starvation began in darkness. But there was no screaming—the prisoners sang. By the eve of the Assumption, four were left alive. The jailer came to finish Kolbe off as he sat in a corner praying. He lifted his fleshless arm to receive the bite from the deadly hypodermic needle. They burned his body with all the others. Fr. Kolbe was beatified in 1971 and canonized in 1982. Saint Maximilian Kolbe, was a Polish Catholic priest and Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II. He had been active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, founding and supervising the monastery near Warsaw, operating an amateur radio station, and founding or running several other organizations and publications. Kolbe composed the Immaculata prayer as a prayer of consecration to the Immaculata. The Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination journeys with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance, and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” This Chapel of St. Maximilian Kolbe is a familiar theme of all the dramatic chapels around Frari reconciling the devotion and sanctity of the faithful.

The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass in the sacristy. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture, oh, and a stop for lunch. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze that Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent.

I never knew quite where I was going in Venice, but just followed the canal, or became trapped by the canals with no way of crossing and had to backtrack.  Probably not the best way to traverse the Venice Lagoon.  My last evening in Venice, I accidentally stumbled on Ponte dei Scalzi, "bridge of the barefoot [monks]," one of only four bridges in Venice to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the Sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I set up my camera facing east in view of the dome and campanile of Chiesa di San Geremia, which contains the relics of Saint Lucy.  Santa Lucia - virgin and martyr who was one of the earliest Christian saints to achieve popularity, having a widespread following before the 5th century. She is the patron saint of the city of Syracuse (Sicily). Because of various traditions associating her name with light, she came to be thought of as the patron of sight. Saint Lucy is one of my favorite saints, not only for her great faith but her very name and remembrance is the very essence and luminance of my images. The original church was founded in the 11th century with the present version dating to 1760.  After the sunset, I found my way back to my favorite restaurant, Hosteria Al Vecio Bragosso, for another amazing dinner.

Dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, the Basilica of St. John Lateran is the first among the four major basilicas of Rome. It is also the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, and is thus known as the "Cathedral of Rome and of the World." Built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano was the first Christian/Catholic church erected in Rome. The present structure of the Basilica resembles Saint Peter's Basilica, and the ancient church was residence of the Papacy until the (1377) return from exile in Avignon and permanent relocation to the Vatican. Many Popes were responsible for repair and additions to the Basilica’s overall splendor and importance throughout the last 1700 years.

Alessandro Vittoria's masterpiece, the statue of St. Jerome, unveiled in 1564, stands as a remarkable tribute to the artistic legacy of the 1500s. Drawing clear inspiration from Michelangelo's iconic sculptures within the sacristy of St. Lorenzo in Florence, this work is nothing short of extraordinary. Vittoria's diligence, his ability to capture the very essence of human expression, and his mastery of form exude a profound introspection that defines his artistic brilliance. In the 18th century, Giuseppe Nogari gifted the world with "The Miracle of St. Joseph of Cupertino." This portrayal of Joseph, renowned for his miraculous levitation during prayer, transcends the canvas. These paintings are characterized by their emotional depth, understated elegance, and a color palette that often depicts aged individuals against a backdrop of darkness. Amidst the enchanting landscape of Italy, the Basilica di Frari holds a special place in my heart. From the outside, it may appear unassuming, but stepping through its doors unleashes a torrent of ancient beauty and grandeur. This Gothic marvel, originating in the early 15th century, was initially constructed in brick, a common feature of Franciscan churches designed to accommodate large congregations. However, what truly captivates the soul is the interior, a luminous expanse that could easily be mistaken for a museum dedicated to Venetian Renaissance art. And then, there's Gelato – a sensory memory that resonates with anyone who has explored Italy. The longing for its delectable taste is universal. Yet, my heart also aches for Venice, a city imbued with hidden spirituality often overlooked by the casual traveler. Venice is a realm of secrets waiting to be uncovered, a place where the sacred and the ordinary intertwine, creating an enduring tapestry of inspiration and wonder.

  • “Our Lady of Lourdes - Santa Maria dei Miracoli Rome - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. We aimed for Piazza del Popolo, encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture which didn’t take long. We headed toward the twin churches opposite Santa Maria del Popolo. On the right is Santa Maria in Montesanto and the left is Santa Maria dei Miracoli. According to tradition, the painting of Madonna dei Miracoli originates from a miracle of 1325. A woman praying to an image of The Virgin Mary painted on the walls along the Tiber River to save her drowning son was miraculously answered.  A small Chapel was built in honor of The Virgin Mary and eventually became this extraordinary church. Pilgrims continue to pray for Our Lady’s intercession in the blessing of future miracles.

A view toward the Altar and Titian’s great painting, peering toward an extraordinary bestowment of artistic reverent beauty of Heaven. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance, and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and is necessitated by a very large church. The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, a Calvary was hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

“Saint Faustina’s name is forever linked to the annual feast of the Divine Mercy, the Divine Mercy chaplet, and the Divine Mercy prayer recited each day at 3 p.m. by many people. Born in what is now west-central Poland, Helena Kowalska was the third of 10 children. She worked as a housekeeper in three cities before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925. She worked as a cook, gardener, and porter in three of their houses. In addition to carrying out her work faithfully, generously serving the needs of the sisters and the local people, Sister Faustina also had a deep interior life. This included receiving revelations from the Lord Jesus, messages that she recorded in her diary at the request of Christ, and her confessors. At a time when some Catholics had an image of God as such a strict judge that they might be tempted to despair about the possibility of being forgiven, Jesus chose to emphasize his mercy and forgiveness for sins acknowledged and confessed. “I do not want to punish aching mankind,” he once told Saint Faustina, “but I desire to heal it, pressing it to my merciful heart.” The two rays emanating from Christ’s heart, she said, represent the blood and water poured out after Jesus’ death. Because Sister Maria Faustina knew that the revelations she had already received did not constitute holiness itself, she wrote in her diary: “Neither graces, nor revelations, nor raptures, nor gifts granted to a soul make it perfect, but rather the intimate union of the soul with God. These gifts are merely ornaments of the soul but constitute neither its essence nor its perfection. St. Luke is held by the Eastern Church as the original “iconographer,” responsible for painting the first icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many painters throughout the centuries have depicted this scene by placing St. Luke in front of an easel, painting a portrait of the Blessed Mother holding the Child Jesus. There is a warmth to Luke’s writing that sets it apart from that of the other synoptic Gospels, and yet it beautifully complements those works. The treasure of the Scriptures is a true gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church.” Luke is the Patron Saint of Artists. LK 6:20-36 – And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. Behind the triumphal arch is the central apse, whose mosaic, dating to the 1200s, is an incredible euphoric vision. Mary and Jesus sit together at the center of the half-dome enthroned. Below the mosaic is four-pointed windows, which are the earliest examples of gothic architecture in Rome. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of man inspired by God. The apse mosaic, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, is from the late 13th century, by the Franciscan friar, Jacopo Torriti.

  • “Our Lady of Lourdes - Santa Maria dei Miracoli Rome”…<br />

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. Forgoing the Coliseum, we aimed for Piazza del Popolo. Encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture which didn’t take long. We headed toward the twin churches opposite Santa Maria del Popolo. On the right is Santa Maria in Montesanto and on the left is Santa Maria dei Miracoli. According to tradition, the painting of Madonna dei Miracoli originates from a miracle of 1325. A woman praying to an image of The Virgin Mary painted on the walls along the Tiber River to save her drowning son was miraculously answered.  A small Chapel was built in honor of The Virgin Mary and eventually became this extraordinary church. Pilgrims continue to pray for Our Lady’s intercession in the blessing of future miracles.

He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: ‘Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” In the Santi Francescani's Chapel, I photographed this masterpiece by Bernardino Licinio painted in 1535 of the seated Virgin and Child. On the left are St. Francis, St. Mark, St. Bonaventura, and St. Clare. On the right are St. Anthony, St. Andrew, St. Louis, St. John the Baptist, and the face of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Licinio's portrayal was ‘not for the nobility of expression, but the splendor of the color and sense of motion.’ The aggregate of the artwork involved in Santa Maria Gloriosa is a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. The Basilica di Frari is one of my favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur.

  • “Christ in the Baptistery - The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Rome”…<br />

Saint John the Baptist, the great religious reformer was sent by God to prepare the people for the Messiah. His vocation was one of selfless giving. “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11). Scripture tells us that many people followed John looking to him for hope. St. John never allowed himself the false honor of receiving these people for his own glory. He knew his calling was one of preparation. When the time came, he led his disciples to Jesus: “The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’ The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus” (John 1:35-37). At the center of this 17th-century chapel is the baptismal font attributed to Giuseppe Valadier and consisting of a red porphyry stone basin topped by golden sculptures; the elaborate décor of the chapel includes polychrome marble walls, colorful ceiling frescoes, gleaming gold stucco work, commemorative plaques, marble busts of church officials, and the marble altarpiece of the Assumption of the Virgin sculpted by Pietro Bernini – above which is a glowing image of the all-seeing Eye of Providence.

Teresa of Ávila (born March 1515), also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, was a Spanish noblewoman who felt called to convent life in the Catholic Church. Teresa lived in an age of exploration as well as political, social, and religious upheaval. It was the 16th century, a time of turmoil and reform. She was born before the Protestant Reformation and died almost 20 years after the closing of the Council of Trent. A Carmelite nun, a prominent Spanish mystic, religious reformer, author, theologian of the contemplative life and mental prayer, she earned the rare distinction of being declared a Doctor of the Church, but not until over four centuries after her death. Active during the Catholic Reformation, she reformed the Carmelite Orders of both women and men. The movement she initiated was later joined by the younger Spanish Carmelite friar and mystic John of the Cross. It led eventually to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites. A formal papal decree adopting the split from the old order was issued in 1580. Teresa was a woman “for God,” a woman of prayer, discipline, and compassion. Her heart belonged to God. Her ongoing conversion was an arduous lifelong struggle, involving ongoing purification and suffering. She was misunderstood, misjudged, and opposed in her efforts at reform. Yet she struggled on, courageous and faithful; she struggled with her mediocrity, her illness, her opposition. And in the midst of all this, she clung to God in life and prayer. Her writings on prayer and contemplation are drawn from her experience: powerful, practical, and graceful. She founded many new monasteries, traveled, wrote, fought—always to renew, to reform. In herself, in her prayer, in her life, in her efforts to reform, in all the people she touched, she was a woman for others, a woman who inspired and gave life. Her writings, especially the Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle, have helped generations of believers.

After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one-third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite reverently quaint interiorly.

  • “Altar of the Crucifix - Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa of the Frari Venice”…<br />

The altar, designed by Baldassare Longhena and executed by the Flemish Giusto Le Court, was built in 1672 by Father Agostino Maffei. On the tympanum, angels hold up the image of Veronica's burial cloth. Between the two marble columns, there are angels holding the tools to the Passion of Christ and two other kneeling at the foot of the crucifix. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. “The Assumption” is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, there was a Calvary hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

The ancient Pantheon is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.  Both the height and the diameter of the dome is exactly 142 feet.  The Romans were so far ahead of their time...just imagine the possibilities if the empire had survived. The Pantheon is now an active Catholic church known as Santa Maria Rotonda.  The ancient tradition of dropping rose petals from the open oculus happens at noon every Pentecostal Sunday during Mass.  The rose petals symbolize the descent of the Holy Spirit falling on the apostles and the faithful, and it dates back as early as 600 years after the birth of Christ.  Vigili del Fuoco (firefighters) of Rome, climb on top of the Pantheon’s dome, and drop thousands of rose petals as the choir chants the sequence of Veni Sancte Spiritus.

My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. This ancient crucifix with “Golden Jesus” is suspended starkly on one of the rearmost antique walls facing a multitude of Chapels. The juxtaposition of the gold contrasts with the furrowed surface, however displaying a perfect synergy for the reverent display. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.

  • "Church of Santa Fosca bell tower above the Santa Fosca canal - Venice"...<br />

The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of St. Mary of Health), commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite small interiorly. I am not sure if it was ever an active parish but more of a shrine with little room for seating. The steps wrapping around the front and sides make a perfect destination for relaxation during warm Venetian days. Interior windows open to the sky which allows for a great deal of sunlight, and as I meandered around I noticed a beautiful crucifix near the confessional. The strong rays of sunshine illuminated the face of Christ just enough to encourage one to examine their conscience one last time before entering into Sacrament of Confession.

  • “Angels Guard the Main Altar of the Sistine Chapel - Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Rome”…<br />

After Mass in the Crucifix Chapel on the second morning of the inaugural Pilgrimage I organized, we were joined by our Roman tour guide for the day. As we listened and ventured around the glorious Basilica, my eyes and camera began to wander. I became stupefied by the grand chapel to the right of the main altar with the rising sun peering through the window just below the cupola. I discreetly wandered in and out in hopes it would shine upon the Holy Crib. The right transept is called the Sistine Chapel, containing the elaborate tomb of Pope Sixtus V (1521-90) and decorated with frescoes and reliefs of events from his reign. The chapel centers on a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib, and the burial place of Saint Jerome, the 4th-century Doctor of the Church. The architect Domenico Fontana designed the chapel, which also contains the tomb of Pope Pius V. The main altar in the chapel has four gilded bronze angels by Sebastiano Torregiani, holding up the ciborium, which is a model of the chapel itself.   • “Three-dimensional artistic impression of the Crucifix in the Abbey of Santa Giustina – Padua”…<br />

Our Pilgrimage finally arrived in Padua and after lunch, we discovered the Abbey of Santa Giustina attached to the Basilica built in the 6th century. It contains the relics of multiple saints (including those of St. Luke the Evangelist). Shaped in the form of a Latin cross, the prodigious Basilica of St. Giustina is one of the most colossal in all of Christianity. The grandeur of the building is enhanced by the Prato della Valle which it overlooks. There are 3 main chapels: the presbytery and 2 chapels for Saints Luke and Matthew that form the transepts and each aisle has six small chapels. The Abbey and the Basilica of St. Anthony were two of my foremost surprises and a must-see on a Pilgrimage to Italy. Unfortunately, pictures were allowed only in St. Giustina, but not in the latter. Initially, I was a bit overwhelmed at the imposing wide open space of the Basilica. The high altar seemed an eternity away. The colorful geometric marble floor leads one to the main altar, but only adds to the great depth, size, and dimension of the Basilica. A curiously placed Crucifix standing about 6’ tall is located just inside the colossal nave and appears diminutive below the 26 pillars supporting the 8 cupolas. As most basilicas are traditionally dark depending on the sunlight, the Crucifix was almost a complete faint silhouette only lit by the dome windows above the altar. I wanted to create an impression of depth in the crucifix itself transposed against the massive Basilica and distance of the architecture. It took several days and many failures, however, I was finally able to find the three dimensions of Christ I was searching for. The glow of the original beauty has become radiant. Framed by the brilliant distant archways, the Crucifixion becomes transformed.

The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. The rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, is used in a sculling manner, also acting as the rudder. For centuries the gondola was the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. It is propelled by a gondolier. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transportation in the city, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. There are just over four hundred gondolas in active service today, virtually all of them used for hire by tourists. In order to become a professional gondolier, you need to obtain a license from the guild. Two hundred years ago, there were 10,000 gondolas in Venice. Although the aristocracy preferred horses to boats through the early Middle-Ages, beginning in the 14th century when horses were outlawed from the streets of Venice, the noble class embraced gondolas as a respectable form of transportation.

  • “Crucifix beyond the vestibule of the Abbey of Santa Giustina – Padua”… <br />

Our Pilgrimage finally arrived in Padua and after lunch, we discovered the Abbey of Santa Giustina attached to the Basilica built in the 6th century. It contains the relics of multiple saints (including those of St. Luke the Evangelist). Shaped in the form of a Latin cross, the prodigious Basilica of St. Giustina is one of the most colossal in all of Christianity. The grandeur of the building is enhanced by the Prato della Valle which it overlooks. There are 3 main chapels: the presbytery and 2 chapels for Saints Luke and Matthew that form the transepts and each aisle has six small chapels. The Abbey and the Basilica of St. Anthony were two of my foremost surprises and a must-see on a Pilgrimage to Italy. Unfortunately, pictures were allowed only in St. Giustina, but not in the latter. Initially, I was a bit overwhelmed at the imposing wide open space of the Basilica. The high altar seemed an eternity away. It is difficult to give one a perspective of just how spacious and immense many of these basilicas can be, not only in pictures but in words. The colorful geometric marble floor leads one to the main altar, but only adds to the great depth, size, and dimension of the Basilica. A curiously placed Crucifix standing about 6’ tall is located just inside the colossal nave and appears diminutive below the 26 pillars supporting the 8 cupolas. As most basilicas are traditionally dark depending on the sunlight, the Crucifix was almost a complete faint silhouette only lit by the dome windows above the altar. Standing as close as possible with a telephoto perspective, I was able to reverse the impression of size and portray the grandiosity Christ deserves, as well as the original artist. The distant window light bled over the body and illuminated the darkness. The glow of the original beauty has become radiant. Framed by the brilliant distant archways, the Crucifixion becomes transformed.

The Cappella delle Reliquie (Chapel of the Relics) by Ferdinando Fuga, 1750 has 10 red porphyry columns and this late 14th-early 15th century wooden crucifix which used to be at the entrance to the church where the tomb of Pope Clement IX is located. The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of man inspired by God.

  • "The little bored angel - Santa Maria del Popolo Rome"...<br />

Not far from my hotel in Roma resides a fairly nondescript exterior of The Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. Encompassed  within its sacred walls is a variety of art work unequaled in the world. The Basilica is comprised of great works by many of the preeminent artists, such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat and Donato Bramante.  “Cappella Cybo” is the second side chapel in the right-hand aisle of the Basilica which is famous for the beauty of its paintings, the preciousness of marble revetments covering its bellissimo walls, and the renowned importance of the artists involved in its construction. The chapel is regarded as one of the most significant sacral monuments erected in Rome in the last quarter of the 17th century.  I knew in advance of the great Caravaggio paintings, especially the “Crucifixion of Peter”; however, I was not prepared for the security guard blocking the doorway and turning off the light to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near.  The guard courageously kept a watchful eye on everyone with a camera in order to protect the integrity of the very famous artwork. I edged to the back, peered around the corner with a telephoto lens and prevailed with a few pictures from a distance of the famous paintings just for my viewing pleasure.  However, as I returned home and upon making a close inspection of the pictures, it was not the Caravaggios I had coveted, but an imposter.  The guard blocked the shallow entrance and within a few steps inside, to the right and left ...the Caravaggios hid from view, as if to tell me to try yet another day. However, another consolation was this tired angel, who seemed less than empathetic with my situation.

It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon.  In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.  The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite small interiorly.  I am not sure if it was ever an active parish but more of a shrine with little room for seating.  The steps wrapping around the front and sides make a perfect destination for relaxation during warm Venetian days.  Interior windows open to the sky which allows for a great deal of sunlight, and as I meandered around I noticed a beautiful crucifix near the confessional.  The strong rays of sunshine illuminated the face of Christ just enough to encourage one to examine their conscience one last time before entering into Sacrament of Confession.

  • “Christ in Paradise - the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa of the Frari Venice”…<br />

A view from the Altar in front of Titian’s great painting, peering toward an extraordinary bestowment of artistic reverent beauty of Heaven. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, there was a Calvary hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. The rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, is used in a sculling manner, also acting as the rudder. For centuries the gondola was the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. It is propelled by a gondolier. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transportation in the city, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. There are just over four hundred gondolas in active service today, virtually all of them used for hire by tourists. In order to become a professional gondolier, you need to obtain a license from the guild. Two hundred years ago, there were 10,000 gondolas in Venice. Although the aristocracy preferred horses to boats through the early Middle-Ages, beginning in the 14th century when horses were outlawed from the streets of Venice, the noble class embraced gondolas as a respectable form of transportation.

On our Pilgrimage of 2019, the second morning in Roma began with Mass at the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. This was my second visit to this perfect Bellissimo Basilica where I found familiar faces and comfort in this exquisite sanctuary. The spiritual treasures found here are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. I could not find the artist who sculpted this lifelike larger than life gold angel, but his expression welcomes all to the blessings of God and His Church. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about Pope John Paul II of suffering and his love of the Holy Mother; “in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing Urbi et Orbi (‘to the city and to the world’). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the basilica. As I wondered around this beautiful Basilica, I found a very quaint, but majestic place called the Cesi Chapel.  I was taken by not only the serenity, but the sunlight shining brightly through an oculus in the center of the ceiling. Above the altar is an extravagant fresco which like many of the others in the chapel describes the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Saint Catherine was a martyr who was said to be one of the saints who appeared to counsel St. Joan of Arc who converted hundreds of people to Christianity.

In 1209 Saint Francis composed a simple rule for his friars, the "Primitive Rule," which came from verses in the Bible. The rule was "To follow our Lord Jesus Christ’s teachings and walk in his footsteps.” This large monument of Italy’s Patron Saint (St. Francis of Assisi) is visually recognizable between the Basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme where we began our pilgrimage and San Giovanni in Laterano where we later enjoyed Mass. It was inaugurated in 1927 to commemorate the seventh centenary of his death. The statue portrays the visit of St Francis to Rome, leading his first eleven followers to seek permission from Pope Innocent III to find a new religious Order. A number of the Pope's counselors considered the mode of life proposed by Francis as unsafe and impractical. However, the Pope dreamt he saw Francis holding up the Basilica of St. John Lateran (the cathedral of Rome, thus the 'home church' of all Christendom) and decided to endorse Francis' Order. This occurred, according to tradition, on April 16, 1210, and constituted the official founding of the Franciscan Order. Artist Giuseppe Tonnini sculpted the bronze monument. An inscription taken from the eleventh canto, of Paradise of the Divine Comedy, can be seen at the base, in which Dante makes references to Saint Francis: “Between Topino's stream and that which flows down from the hill the blessed Ubaldo chose, from a high peak there hangs a fertile slope; from there Perugia feels both heat and cold at Porta Sole, while behind it sorrow Nocera and Gualdo under their hard yoke. From this hillside, where it abates its rise, a sun was born into the world, much like this sun when it is climbing from the Ganges. Therefore let him who names this site not say, Assisi, which would be to say too little, but Orient, if he would name it rightly.”

  • “Pastel Sunset of the Venetian Canal”…<br />

I never knew quite where I was going in Venice, but just followed the canal, or became trapped by the canals with no way of crossing and had to backtrack. Probably not the best way to traverse the Venice Lagoon. On my last evening in Venice, I accidentally stumbled on Ponte dei Scalzi, the "bridge of the barefoot [monks],” one of only four bridges in Venice to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the Sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I set up my camera facing east in view of the dome and campanile of Chiesa di San Geremia, which contains the relics of Saint Lucy, the patron saint of our eyes. After taking many images of the descending sun, I decided to follow the sun by way of the church of San Geremia taking a hard left northwest along the Cannaregioa Canal and taking this photo of the setting sun from the bridge, Ponte delle Guglie. After sunset, I found my way back to my favorite restaurant, Hosteria Al Vecio Bragosso. Che Dio Benedica l'Italia! Luke 15:4-6: “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’

Children all over the world know him and love him. In Germany, he’s Kris Kringle. In France, he’s Pere Noel. British children call him Father Christmas. Of course, you know him as Santa Claus. Nicholas was loved for one reason. He loved. He loved God and God’s people so much that he would do anything for them. The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in modern-day Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas very soon became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his dedication to protecting children, and his concern for sailors and ships. Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith and was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminals – murderers, thieves, and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, where he heroically defended the Church against heresy. Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of St. Nicholas’ life and deeds. These accounts help us understand his extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered as a protector and helper of those in need – and why he is the inspiration behind Santa Claus. In 1823, a popular poem called “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, which we now know as “The Night Before Christmas,” first described St. Nicholas as bringing toys and sweets to children on Christmas Eve. The legend of Santa Claus was born.

  • "Sun hiding behind the Macuteo Obelisk - Roman Pantheon"...<br />

Eventually, one discovers that God finds a way where there is none. A very crowded Pantheon at 3:00 PM in the bright afternoon made creative photography impossible. However, getting on my knees and placing the sun behind the cross of the Obelisk created a phenomenal appeal. All are original, including the landing dove/pigeon and sun flare. The Obelisk was originally built by one of the most famous Egyptian Pharaohs about 1300 years before Christ by Pharaoh Ramses II for the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis and brought to Rome in ancient times. It was rediscovered in 1374 underneath the apse of the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. In the mid-15th century, the obelisk had been erected in the small Piazza di San Macuto some 200 meters east of the Pantheon, where it remained until its 1711 move to the Piazza della Rotonda. It is still called the Obelisco Macutèo after its previous location. Fontana del Pantheon was constructed by Giacomo Della Porta under Pope Gregory XIII in 1575, and the obelisk was added under Pope Clement XI. The city of Rome harbors the most obelisks in the world. There are eight ancient Egyptian and five ancient Roman obelisks. The Romans used special heavy cargo carriers called obelisk ships to transport the monuments down the Nile to Alexandria and from there across the Mediterranean Sea to Rome. On-site, large Roman cranes were employed to erect the monoliths. The obelisk is crowned by a bronze cross, the symbol of Jesus Christ. One idea that can be drawn from this is that Christianity—the cross of Jesus Christ—conquers paganism.  Another idea is that the obelisk represents the human desire for God which is only fulfilled in the Cross of Christ.

  • “Saint Luke the Evangelist – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

Luke is one of the Four Evangelists—the four traditionally ascribed authors of the canonical gospels. He is the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, which would mean Luke contributed over a quarter of the text of the New Testament, more than any other author. In the two books, he shows the parallel between the life of Christ and that of the Church. He is the only Gentile Christian among the Gospel writers. Tradition holds him to be a native of Antioch, and Paul calls him “our beloved physician.” His Gospel was probably written between 70 and 85 A.D. Luke appears in Acts during Paul’s second journey, remains at Philippi for several years until Paul returns, accompanies Paul to Jerusalem, and remains near him when he is imprisoned in Caesarea. He accompanied Paul on the dangerous journey to Rome where he was a faithful companion. And after everyone else deserts Paul in his final imprisonment and suffering, it is Luke who remains with Paul to the end: "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). Luke also has a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, especially Mary. It is only in Luke's gospel that we hear the story of the Annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth including the Magnificat, the Presentation, and the story of Jesus' disappearance in Jerusalem. It is Luke that we must thank for the Scriptural parts of the Hail Mary: "Hail Mary full of grace" spoken at the Annunciation and "Blessed are you and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus." Ancient traditions also acknowledge Luke as the founder of Christian iconography, making him a patron of artists as well as doctors and other medical caregivers. His relics reside in the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua, Italy. Reading Luke's gospel gives a good idea of his character as one who loved the poor, who wanted the door to God's kingdom opened to all, who respected women, and who saw hope in God's mercy for everyone.

Our Lady of the Column is a Byzantine Madonna and Child that was painted on a column of Porta Santa marble in the original Basilica of St. Peter (Constantine). There is no detailed information on the original painting available, but from the style, it appears to be 11th-12th century. When the new Basilica was built in the 16th century, the column and painting were preserved; and in 1581 it was placed in a marble frame created by Giacomo della Porta, who designed an altar of exquisite marble with alabaster columns. After the Second Vatican Council, Paul VI honored it with the title of "Mater Ecclesiae". In 1981 John Paul II had a mosaic reproduction of it set on the external wall of the palazzo facing St. Peter's Square, where it can also be seen illuminated at night. The chapel is covered by one of the basilica's minor cupolas which let in light that enhances the colors of the altar. On the vault of the dome are portraits of the Litany of Loreto in the spandrels: St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Cyril of Alexandra, St. John Damascene. Inside the lunettes are the portraits of The Virgin Mother and Child, the Dream of St. Joseph, and the Kings, David and Solomon. This image is one of the multitudes of beautiful images in and around Saint Peter’s Basilica, the most resplendent church in the world.

  • "Guardian Angel Helps to Illuminate the Altar of the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina Rome - Painting by Dino Carbetta"<br />

After a profound spiritual experience during Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and an awe-inspiring tour of the Vatican, my friend and fellow pilgrim, Patrick, and I found ourselves uplifted during our lunchtime conversation. We set our sights on the enchanting Piazza del Popolo, with the renowned Caravaggio paintings housed in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo calling to us. On my previous attempts, these masterpieces, "Crucifixion of Peter" and "Conversion of Saint Paul," seemed elusive, always obscured by a security guard who would promptly close the chapel door and turn off the lights. However, this time, luck was on our side. As we approached the Basilica, we discovered it undergoing reconstruction. Once inside, we were met with darkness and disarray, making locating the chapel challenging. Suddenly, a ray of light pierced through the shadows, revealing the Caravaggio paintings steps away and we swiftly captured the moment with our cameras. Alas, our euphoria was short-lived as a mysterious guard promptly turned off the lights again. Despite the fleeting encounter, we left the Basilica with our hearts racing from the exhilarating experience. Immersing ourselves further in the atmosphere of Rome, we stumbled upon the picturesque neighborhood of Lucina and settled into a charming bistro for an aperitivo. To our delight, the ancient Basilica of St. Lawrence, dating back to 366 AD, stood adjacent to our table, beckoning us to explore its history and beauty. Stepping into the Basilica, a brilliant stream of sunlight bathed a majestic angel statue with a heavenly glow, leaving me startled by its ethereal beauty, reminded me of life's preciousness, and how moments of disappointment lead to profound understanding and respite. The angel appeared to reach out, touching the hand of Christ conveying a message of illumination and enlightenment.

  • “Organic Venice - Perpetual Evolution of Splendor, Harmony, and Color” …<br />

I am not sure if I am the first to describe Venice as “organic;” however, there has never been a more perfect description to define Venice’s ever-changing persona. Venice is perhaps the most uniquely iconic seaside city in the world, and its impression changes by the minute with the dynamic light and active tide coming in and out. Flying into Venice via the USA, I was met with torrential rains in the early morning, which finally gave way to afternoon sunshine. The creaky, wet, gloomy, old, decaying Venice sinking and soaking in the morning rain… opened like flower petals in the springtime at the first glimpse of sunlight. The organic lagoon began to blossom as if the decay became antique, the gloom became a passion, the creaky became sweet sounds, and the desperate island illuminated with life, color, and hope. This image was captured along a small canal in front of The Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars), known locally as Frari, one of the great churches of Venice. Ironically, before my Italian journey, I read Rick Steve’s travel book on Italy and watched all of his shows made in Italy. It seemed every American tourist had his book in their hands following closely every piece of advice he offered. As I pondered my impending images, I looked up and there was Rick about 20 feet in front of me. Sometimes one has moments of brilliance, and mine was to yell…"Hey, Rick” and snap a photo when he looked. He smiled as I walked up and shook his hand, and dumbfoundedly I shared how much he contributed to my tour. He was very gracious as we spoke for about five minutes and then he continued producing his next PBS show on the Venice Lagoon including his favorite church, The Frari. As I walked away shocked by my accidental meeting, the clouds parted and the light transformed a perfect ambiance along this tiny, yet majestic canal.

  • "Father Peek elevates the Host for Adoration - The Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia"... <br />

This image is one of my favorites and the most poignant of our 2019 Pilgrimage. On our fourth gentile morning in Roma before leaving for Sorrento, we walked from our hotel to the Bellissimo Santo Spirito for Mass. Located just steps from St. Peter’s Basilica, the church is the center of the Divine Mercy established by St. John Paul II. Each day at 3 p.m. the congregants assemble to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in this reverent sanctuary containing St. Faustina Kowalska and St. John Paul II relics. The church is distinguished for its beautiful and pious artistic and aesthetic adornment, yet, also has a long history of bringing mercy to the human spirit and body. In the eighth century, a church called Santa Maria in Sassia was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name of the church comes from “the Saxon school,” where pilgrims from Northern Europe and Saxon nations received their first spiritual and material assistance. In 1198, at the request of Pope Innocent III, the first “Holy Spirit Hospital” in Europe was built adjacent to the church. The chapel on the right side is dedicated to The Divine Mercy and to Saint Faustina where the “The Apostle of The Divine Mercy” statue resides with her reliquary donated by the Holy Father John Paul II. The reflection of Father Peek in “The Elevation of the Host” is after genuflection in adoration. The priest raises the Host so that the Faithful may also adore Jesus Christ, the true God, and true Man present on the altar. Look at the sacred Body of Jesus and then say with all your heart (interiorly): "I adore Thee, O Sacred Body of Jesus Christ, Thou art my Lord and my God; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things."

  • "High altar of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption - Positano"...<br />

The history of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is closely linked to the Benedictine monastery of St. Mary, which, according to tradition, was built when a Byzantine icon of the Virgin was brought to Positano and venerated thereafter. The Icon belonged to a cargo ship from the East, and offshore of Positano the ship was stopped by a dead calm sea. After unsuccessful attempts to continue sailing, the sailors heard a voice saying “Posa Posa”, meaning, “Put me down, put me down!” (Origin of the name “Positano”). The captain thought this miracle meant that the Virgin wanted to stop there and decided to head for shore. At that point…the ship began to sail again. The sailors disembarked the icon and gave it to the inhabitants of Positano, who chose the Virgin as their patron and built a church in her honor. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a prominent aspect of Positano’s cultural, religious, and architectural landscape. Strategically located in the center of town with the backdrop of the Azzurro Mediterranean Sea, the church’s colorful majolica tiled cupola is one of the town’s iconic symbols. I found this Crucifix inside a small chapel of the ancient church which was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. Santa Maria keeps a blessed and watchful eye over Positano and welcomes all to this beautiful seaside village.

  • “Venice pastel sunset”…<br />

I never knew quite where I was going in Venice, but just followed the canal, or became trapped by the canals with no way of crossing and had to backtrack.  Probably not the best way to traverse the Venice Lagoon.  My last evening in Venice I accidently stumbled on Ponte dei Scalzi, "bridge of the barefoot [monks],” one of only four bridges in Venice to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the Sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I set up my camera facing east in view of the dome and campanile of Chiesa di San Geremia, which contains the relics of Saint Lucy, the patron saint of our eyes.  After taking many images of the descending sun, I decided to follow the sun by way of the church of San Geremia taking a hard left northwest along the Cannaregioa Canal, and taking this photo of the setting sun from the bridge, Ponte delle Guglie.  After the sun set, I found my way back to my favorite restaurant, Hosteria Al Vecio Bragosso.

  • “Monument to Saint Francis of Assisi in Rome”…<br />

In 1209 Saint Francis composed a simple rule for his friars, the "Primitive Rule," which came from verses in the Bible. The rule was "To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in his footsteps.” This large monument of Italy’s Patron Saint (St. Francis of Assisi) is visually recognizable between the Basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme where we began our pilgrimage and San Giovanni in Laterano where we later enjoyed Mass. It was inaugurated in 1927 to commemorate the seventh centenary of his death. The statue portrays the visit of St Francis to Rome, leading his first eleven followers to seek permission from Pope Innocent III to found a new religious Order. A number of the Pope's counselors considered the mode of life proposed by Francis as unsafe and impractical. However, the Pope dreamt he saw Francis holding up the Basilica of St. John Lateran (the cathedral of Rome, thus the 'home church' of all Christendom) and decided to endorse Francis' Order. This occurred, according to tradition, on April 16, 1210, and constituted the official founding of the Franciscan Order. The bronze monument was sculpted by artist Giuseppe Tonnini. An inscription taken from the eleventh canto, of Paradise of the Divine Comedy, can be seen at the base, in which Dante makes references to Saint Francis: “Between Topino's stream and that which flows down from the hill the blessed Ubaldo chose, from a high peak there hangs a fertile slope; from there Perugia feels both heat and cold at Porta Sole, while behind it sorrow Nocera and Gualdo under their hard yoke. From this hillside, where it abates its rise, a sun was born into the world, much like this sun when it is climbing from the Ganges. Therefore let him who names this site not say, Assisi, which would be to say too little, but Orient, if he would name it rightly.”

  • “Ancient Roman garden replica of Hercules from Pompey”…<br />

This statue among ancient ruins is probably a 15th or 16th century stone replica I accidently stumbled upon in a Roman garden of the very famous bronze statue of Heracles with club, lion skin and golden apples. The original statue was found neatly buried under tiles with the inscription “FCS” (“fulgor conditum summanium”), indicating that it was struck by lightning then buried on the spot. The priceless statue is Gilt bronze Roman artwork of the 2nd century AD, and located in the Vatican museum.  This image is probably the most unusual of my Italian journey and every bit an accidental surprise.  Upon leaving the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, I decided to walk just over a mile to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.  The street Via Merulana was lined with attractive 5-6 story apartment homes.  Not sure if I was heading in the right direction, I walked into a bottom floor parking garage seeking help, and found an elderly Italian woman sitting in a garden opposite the street. As I walked through the garage to the other side, shockingly I noticed the garden had ancient ruins around the edges with replicas of famous statues as center pieces.  It was as if I’d been transported back to ancient times, and the juxtaposition of the 100 year old newer building seemed aberrant, yet I remembered I was in the Eternal City where civilizations were stacked atop each other for almost 3000 years.  The elderly Italian woman assured me I was heading in the right direction and allowed me a few minutes to photograph the ancient ruins.  She smiled and waved as I left and exclaimed, “Buon Viaggio!” as I walked away.  Her wish for me was “Have a nice trip!” in Italian.

  • “Fountain of the goddess Roma in People's Square”…<br />

Staying in a hotel which was a converted Monastery, Residenza Di Ripetta is between Piazza del Popolo and the famous Spanish Steps, centers of activity in Roma.  Piazza del Popolo is a harmonious oval piazza situated near Borghese Park. Three churches border the square and located in the center is an ancient obelisk from Heliopolis, Egypt dating from 1300 BC.  Santa Maria del Popolo is the most celebrated of the churches, built in the year 1477 and containing sculptures from Bernini and paintings from one of my favorite artists, Caravaggio.  The fountain on the western end of the square is the Fontana del Nettuno and shows Neptune accompanied by Tritons. The fountain opposite the Neptune Fountain, at the foot of the Pincio Gardens, is known as the Fontana della dea di Roma. The central figure is the goddess Rome, flanked by allegorical figures representing the rivers Tiber and Aniene. Below the goddess is a statue of a she-wolf suckling Remus and Romulus, founders of Rome.  This is a very common and visited site in the Piazza, but I was fortunate to have perfect skies and stationary subjects for the creation of the image.

  • “Macuteo Roman Obelisk in the Pantheon - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

Originally one of a pair at the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis, the other being the now much shorter Matteiano Obelisk. Moved to the Temple of Isis near Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Found in 1373 near San Macuto. Moved to the front of the Pantheon by Pope Clement XI in 1711 over a fountain by Filippo Barigioni. The Aqua Virgo, one of the eleven aqueducts that supplied ancient Rome with drinking water, served the area of the Campus Martius, but had fallen into disrepair and disuse by the late Middle Ages. It was reconstructed under Pope Nicholas V and consecrated in 1453 as the Acqua Vergine. In 1570, Giacomo della Porta was commissioned under Pope Gregory XIII to oversee a major project to extend the distribution of water from the Vergine to eighteen new public fountains. The Obelisk was originally built by one of the most famous Egyptian Pharaohs about 1300 years before Christ, Ramses II. The cross of Jesus, through his death and resurrection, has conquered all evil and fulfilled the desires of every human person expressed through the diversity of religions that have existed throughout history. The ancient obelisk pointed upward toward the sun when built-in Heliopolis, but now it directs the attention of every pilgrim who views this and other Obelisk’s in Rome to the victorious cross of Christ, protecting them and dispersing any evil that approaches. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on Sept. 14 is a reminder for us to place the cross of Christ over everything that we are and do. Christ wants to claim each one of us entirely and invites us to surrender completely to him. The victory of Jesus on the cross informs everything in our lives and allows us to exclaim, “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your Cross you have redeemed the world.”

  • "Madonna and Child with Saints - Chapel of the Franciscan Saints - Basilica dei Frari Venice"...<br />

The altarpiece is depicting the Madonna and Child enthroned. To His right are St. Clare, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis and St. Mark; behind the head of the client: father Antonietto da Venezia; to the left: St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony, St. Louis d'Anjou (Bishop of Toulouse) and Saint Andrew. The artist is Bernardino Licinio and completed in the year 1524. The Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. This masterpiece of Madonna and Child is a central theme of all the dramatic chapels around Frari to the delight of the faithful. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.

Artistic, meaningful, and profound, this is a personal favorite from my 2019 Pilgrimage to Italy. After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. Forgoing the Coliseum, we aimed for Piazza del Popolo. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. Waltzing out in an adrenalin rush having stood so close to the priceless paintings… we decided to take on the bustling Roma. We stumbled into a Bellissimo neighborhood called Lucina and settled at a bistro for an aperitivo. The ancient Basilica of St. Lawrence built in 366 AD, was adjacent to our table and required a visit. As I walked in, I was startled by the brilliant sunlight coming through the window directly upon the majestic angel. The vision reminded me of our precious life and how disappointment sometimes leads to great respite and understanding. The Angel was reaching out touching the hand of Christ becoming illuminated. I know the same happened on this very day for a couple of wide-eyed exploring Pilgrims who metaphorically reached out and were blessed by an uncharacteristic joy and an unexpected grace.

This image was taken along a small canal in front of The Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars), known locally as Frari, one of the great churches of Venice.  Ironically, before my Italian journey, I read Rick Steves travel book on Italy and watched all of his shows made in Italy.  It seemed every American tourist had his book in their hands following closely every piece of advice he offered.  As I pondered my impending images, I looked up and there was Rick about 20 feet in front of me.  Sometimes one has moments of brilliance, and mine was to yell…”hey Rick” and snap a photo when he looked.  He actually smiled as I walked up and shook his hand, and dumbfoundedly I shared how much he contributed to my trip.  He was very gracious as we spoke for about five minutes and then he continued producing his next PBS show on the Venice Lagoon including his favorite church, Frari.  As I walked away shocked by my accidental meeting, the clouds parted and the light struck a perfect note along this tiny majestic canal.

This image was also created just after sundown when the sky developed a beautiful blue hue, accenting the golden lighting of the Angels on the Bridge. The Bridge of Angels (in Italian, Ponte Sant'Angelo) spans the Tiber River in Rome. Only a few steps away from St. Peter's Basilica, the bridge reflects the psychological shift from secular to sacred that occurs when pilgrims crossed from the busy streets of Rome over to the churches of the Vatican. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the famed Italian sculptor, originally designed the bridge's angel sculptures in the seventeenth century. Though few of the angels standing today were done by his hand, Bernini's vision for the bridge lives on. Five angel sculptures flank each side of the bridge, with statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the eastern bank. At the base of each sculpture is a line from the Bible in Latin. Her sense of commitment led her to a profound experience of the love of God and neighbor. She never had an easy life, but she did live with a great sense of peace and joy. “I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.”   Saint Therese had a simple yet powerful message that still resonates in the hearts of millions today. She died at the age of 24, believing that her life was just beginning for God, promising to spend her heaven doing good on earth. Her promised “Shower of Roses” began and has become a torrent in the Church ever since. These are the words of Thérèse of Lisieux, a Carmelite nun called the “Little Flower,” who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more popular than this young nun. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and consists mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. She saw in quiet suffering redemptive suffering, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said she came to the Carmel convent “to save souls and pray for priests.” Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times.” Thérèse was canonized in 1925. In 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be so recognized in light of her holiness and the influence of her teaching on spirituality in the Church. Her parents were also canonized in 2015. Pope John Paul II stated: Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face is the youngest of all the “Doctors of the Church”, but her ardent spiritual journey shows such maturity, and the insights of faith expressed in her writings are so vast and profound that they deserve a place among the great spiritual masters.

There are three main doors. At the center, is the monumental door in green bronze made by Antonio Maraini, which was placed here in 1931; to its right is the new Holy Door, made of golden bronze, created by the sculptor Enrico Manfrini and erected for the Jubilee of the year 2000. The central door shows episodes relating to the lives and preaching’s of Saints Peter and Paul. A large cross with inlaid silver and embellished with stones of lapis lazuli overlays the door from side to side. The cross on the drawing represents a cross motif in curlicued silver, and this has on its plaques in lapis lazuli. Four on the horizontal bar show the symbols of the Evangelists, and on the vertical bar are the symbols of the Apostles. The reliefs (left to right) on the door show scenes from the lives, apostolates, and martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul, according to the wishes of the abbot of the monastery.   • “Mass in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican at the Altar of St. Pius X”…<br />

The 3rd day in Rome on our Italy Pilgrimage with Dino (Sacred Artist Dino Carbetta), Spiritual Director Fr. Kevin Peek and led by 206 Tours, we enjoyed Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Below the altar, is a crystal coffin containing the body of St. Pius X (1904-1914), as one may view in this image.  Pope Pius X is perhaps best remembered for his encouragement of the frequent reception of Holy Communion, especially by children. The second of 10 children in a poor Italian family, Joseph Sarto became Pius X at age 68. He was one of the 20th century’s greatest popes. Ever mindful of his humble origins, Pope Pius stated, “I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor.” He was embarrassed by some of the opulence of the papal court. More interested in politics, Pope Pius encouraged Italian Catholics to become more politically involved. On the 11th anniversary of his election as pope, Europe was plunged into World War I. Pius had foreseen it, but it sickened him, “this is the last affliction the Lord will visit on me. I would gladly give my life to save my poor children from this ghastly scourge.” He died a few weeks after the war began, and was canonized in 1954. His legacy included promoting the practice of daily communion as a source of virtue and holiness, he reformed the liturgy in the Missal and Breviary as well as sacred music and Gregorian chant. He fought against and condemned modernism which is still considered an issue in society and the church today. Our Spiritual guide Father Peek concelebrated this Mass with another 206 Tour group from Memphis, TN. Our pilgrims crossed paths many times and new friendships were formed by all.

  • "The Cross of the Colosseum illuminated in the evening"...<br />

The Colosseum, is an elliptical amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, the largest ever built during the Roman Empire. One of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering in history, its construction started in 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus. Capable of seating 65,000 spectators, it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torch lit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum. The Colosseum is generally regarded by Christians as a site of the martyrdom of large numbers of believers during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, as evidenced by Church history and tradition. A Cross stands exultant in the Colosseum center with a plaque stating: “The amphitheatre, one consecrated to triumphs, entertainments, and the impious worship of pagan gods, is now dedicated to the sufferings of the martyrs purified from impious superstitions.” In viewing many historical sites during my journey in Italy, seeing the iconic Colosseum for the first time…I became awestruck. It is as grand in person as it appears in the media, and it seems to hold a very mystical aura. Climbing the ancient steps inside, one cannot help but feel not only the suffering of its past, but the forgiveness and sacrifice of its present stature. As evening descended on the ancient Colosseum, the sun illuminated the cross. I was determined to capture this amazing image as the security guards circled to kick me out...

  • "Madonna of the Angels - The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels – Assisi"...<br />

Portiuncula is a town and a parish situated about three-quarters of a mile from Assisi. The town has grown up around the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels. It was of this little church moved within the Basilica that St. Francis recognized his vocation in the year 1208, and it was where St. Francis spent most of his life. In 1211, the Benedictines gave him the little chapel of St. Mary of the Angels or the Portiuncula, which is a “little portion” of land. The first Franciscan convent was also formed nearby. The Portiuncula was also where St. Francis received the vows of St. Clare. St. Francis died here on October 3, 1226, and on his death-bed, he recommended the chapel to the faithful protection and care of his brothers. Two years before Saint Francis of Assisi died, and when he was 42 years old — one year after he had built the first crib in honor of Our Lord — he went off to a lonely mountain called Mount Alvernia, to prepare himself by forty days of fasting and prayer for the feast of Saint Michael, the greatest of God’s angels. On the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14, Saint Francis received in his hands, feet and side the Sacred Wounds from Our Lord’s own body. Never was a saint more beautifully loved than Saint Francis of Assisi. The wounds Jesus gave him stayed in his hands, feet, and side, and continually bled for two more years, until he died in 1226. This realistic image of St. Francis with the Stigmata on his hands was captured in the Basilica Museum, along with many other historical treasures from his life. Our 2019 Pilgrimage was fortunate to tour this very reverent and spiritual Basilica. The gold-plated statue of the Madonna degli Angeli by the sculptor Colasanti and cast by Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry was put on top of the façade in 1930.

Evangelium vitae, translated in English to "The Gospel of Life", is a papal encyclical promulgated on 25 March 1995 by Pope John Paul II. Among all the crimes which can be committed against life, procured abortion has characteristics making it particularly serious and deplorable. The Second Vatican Council defines abortion, together with infanticide, as an "unspeakable crime." The texts of Sacred Scripture never address the question of deliberate abortion and so do not directly and specifically condemn it. But they show such great respect for the human being in the mother's womb that they require as a logical consequence that God's commandment "You shall not kill" be extended to the unborn child as well. ... Christian Tradition – as the Declaration issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith points out so well – is clear and unanimous, from the beginning up to our own day, in describing abortion as a particularly grave moral disorder. ... Given such unanimity in the doctrinal and disciplinary tradition of the Church, Paul VI was able to declare that this tradition [regarding abortion] is unchanged and unchangeable. Therefore, by the authority which Christ conferred upon Peter and his Successors, in communion with the Bishops – who on various occasions have condemned abortion and who in the aforementioned consultation, albeit dispersed throughout the world, have shown unanimous agreement concerning this doctrine – I declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. Ashes Signify: “When God drove our first parents from the Garden, he reminded Adam, “you are dust, and to dust, you shall return” (Gn 3:19). We hear these words each year on Ash Wednesday, when the priest places ashes on our foreheads, a reminder of our mortality and the seriousness of the Lenten pilgrimage we are about to begin. Throughout the Old Testament ashes signify sorrow and repentance. Jeremiah commands Israel to mourn its impending doom when he says, “dress in on sackcloth, roll in ashes” (Jer 6:26). When Job emerges from his harrowing face-to-face encounter with God, he says, “I have spoken but did not understand.… Therefore I … repent in dust and ashes” (Jb 42:3-6). Jesus employs similar imagery when he criticizes his listeners’ hardness of heart: “Woe to you … if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes” (Mt 11:21). Ashes and dust amount to the same thing. Neither is particularly pleasant, and both remind us God used some pretty unattractive material when he created us. The Basilica of St. John Lateran, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, is the first of Rome's four major basilicas. It is also the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, who is known as the Pope, and is referred to as the "Cathedral of Rome and of the World." San Giovanni in Laterano, the first Christian/Catholic church constructed in Rome, was built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century. The current structure of the Basilica is similar to Saint Peter's Basilica, and the ancient church was once the residence of the Papacy until their return from exile in Avignon in 1377 and their permanent relocation to the Vatican. In 1702, Pope Clement XI announced a grand plan for twelve sculptures of the Apostles to fill the niches in the nave of the Basilica. The commission was open to all the premier sculptors of late Baroque Rome, and Camillo Rusconi was the sculptor of brothers St. James and St. John. The larger-than-life statues of these great men impress visitors with their imposing presence as they bless the nave. James was one of the favored three who had the privilege of witnessing the Transfiguration, the raising to life of Jairus's daughter, and the agony in Gethsemani. Saint Matthew tells us that their mother came, while Mark says it was the brothers themselves, to ask for the seats of honor in the kingdom. “Jesus said in reply, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They said to him, ‘We can’” (Matthew 20:22). Jesus then told them they would, indeed, drink from the cup and share his baptism of pain and death, but that sitting at his right hand or left was not his to give. He said, "It is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father" (Matthew 20:23b). It remained to be seen how long it would take for James and John to realize the implications of their confident “We can!”

To our lives, he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.” Since early childhood, my fascination with the face of Christ resulted in a multitude of sketches, drawings, and photographs. Today, my mind’s eye continues this perception in wonderment. I yearn to see, feel, and touch this beatific vision. Blessed with humble skills, this is my current vision after three years of introspection and change of the face of Christ. I know that in heaven the just will see God by direct intuition, clearly and distinctly. Scripture and theology tell us that the blessed see God face to face. And because this vision is immediate and direct, it is also exceedingly clear and distinct. Battle against Evil: Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on an evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace.
