The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, Saint Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. I found Saint Mary in a spectacular monument to Cardinal Agostino Favoriti, 1685, by Filippo Carcani. The famous 17th-century cardinal is shown seated at a desk behind large allegorical figures of Fortitude (with the lion) and Saint Mary representing religion. Of the very large monument, Mother Mary stood out to me, as one cannot help feeling blessed by her compassionate presence, and the luminescent glow of light gently descending upon her face, revealing her abiding love for her precious son. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about Pope John Paul II of suffering and his love of the Holy Mother; “in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing Urbi et Orbi (‘to the city and the world’). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

  • “The Bronze Dome of San Geremia - Casa di Santa Lucia rises above the Grand Canal - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

I never knew quite where I was going in Venice, but just followed the canal, or became trapped by the canals with no way of crossing and had to backtrack.  Probably not the best way to traverse the Venice Lagoon.  My last evening in Venice, I accidentally stumbled on Ponte dei Scalzi, "bridge of the barefoot [monks]," one of only four bridges in Venice to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the Sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I set up my camera facing east in view of the dome and campanile of Chiesa di San Geremia, which contains the relics of Saint Lucy.  Santa Lucia - virgin and martyr who was one of the earliest Christian saints to achieve popularity, having a widespread following before the 5th century. She is the patron saint of the city of Syracuse (Sicily). Because of various traditions associating her name with light, she came to be thought of as the patron of sight. Saint Lucy is one of my favorite saints, not only for her great faith but her very name and remembrance is the very essence and luminance of my images. The original church was founded in the 11th century with the present version dating to 1760.  After the sunset, I found my way back to my favorite restaurant, Hosteria Al Vecio Bragosso, for another amazing dinner.

Dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, the Basilica of St. John Lateran is the first among the four major basilicas of Rome. It is also the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, and is thus known as the "Cathedral of Rome and of the World." Built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano was the first Christian/Catholic church erected in Rome. The present structure of the Basilica resembles Saint Peter's Basilica, and the ancient church was residence of the Papacy until the (1377) return from exile in Avignon and permanent relocation to the Vatican. Many Popes were responsible for repair and additions to the Basilica’s overall splendor and importance throughout the last 1700 years.

  • “The Church of Santa Maddalena is surrounded by Roe Deer, both enjoying the sunset over the Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

The Church of St. Magdalene resides in a small village located in the Dolomites of Italy. Both, the village and the church, are symbols of the Val di Funes. This tiny picturesque village of just 377 people is located in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Northern Italy. Historically, the church was built where the miraculous image of Santa Maddalena was washed up by the Fopal River. Saint Mary Magdalene church is mentioned beginning in 1394. The current form of the nave with a sloping base and a slightly grooved roof cornice, with pear and round bar on the pointed arch portal with a red chalk inscription, was complete in 1492. The mural exterior is the Crucifix on the gable in a niche with a donkey's back, weather-beaten, early XVI century. St. Christopher is lively and virtuoso in movement with a fluttering, wrinkled robe. Interiorly, the keystones on the vault, are bust portraits of Mary with the Christ Child and saints. The valley, as you can see, Val di Funes is stunningly beautiful. Summer, it’s very green and dotted with colorful flowers. Winter, it’s covered with snow, and the ragged Dolomite peaks, pierce the sky toward the heavens. Mary Magdalene is the first among the women following Jesus to proclaim Him as having overcome death. She is the first to announce the joyful message of Easter. But she also proved she was among those who loved Him most when she stood at the foot of the Cross on Mount Calvary together with Mary, His Mother, and the disciple, St. John. She did not deny him or run away in fear as the other disciples did, but remained close to Him every moment, up to and including the tomb. The Italian Roe Deer rejoice in the beauty of God’s creation.

Alessandro Vittoria's masterpiece, the statue of St. Jerome, unveiled in 1564, stands as a stunning testament to the artistic grandeur of the 16th century. Deeply influenced by Michelangelo’s renowned sculptures at the sacristy of St. Lorenzo in Florence, Vittoria’s work captures the essence of the human condition with an extraordinary command of form and emotion. His St. Jerome exudes a profound sense of contemplation, reflecting the timeless brilliance of Renaissance art. In the 18th century, Giuseppe Nogari immortalized "The Miracle of St. Joseph of Cupertino," the saint famed for his miraculous levitations during prayer. Nogari’s depiction transcends mere representation, evoking a sense of the divine through its emotional intensity, subdued elegance, and color palette rich with shadow and light, often setting aged figures against a darkened backdrop. Among the historic wonders of Italy, the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari holds a sacred place. From the outside, its brick façade may appear simple, in keeping with the Franciscan tradition of accommodating large congregations, but the moment you step inside, an overwhelming sense of ancient beauty and grandeur emerges. Built in the early 15th century, this Gothic marvel unfolds like a treasure trove of Venetian Renaissance art, a space that feels more like a museum than a church. And then, there’s the memory of gelato—a flavor, a sensation forever tied to Italy’s allure, awakening a universal longing. Yet Venice, with all its hidden spirituality and untold secrets, remains etched in the soul. Beyond the city’s surface charms lies a realm where the sacred and the everyday coexist, creating an eternal source of inspiration and wonder for those willing to seek it. Venice, with its enigmatic charm and profound spiritual undertones, continues to captivate the soul.

  • “Our Lady of Lourdes - Santa Maria dei Miracoli Rome - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. We aimed for Piazza del Popolo, encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture which didn’t take long. We headed toward the twin churches opposite Santa Maria del Popolo. On the right is Santa Maria in Montesanto and the left is Santa Maria dei Miracoli. According to tradition, the painting of Madonna dei Miracoli originates from a miracle of 1325. A woman praying to an image of The Virgin Mary painted on the walls along the Tiber River to save her drowning son was miraculously answered.  A small Chapel was built in honor of The Virgin Mary and eventually became this extraordinary church. Pilgrims continue to pray for Our Lady’s intercession in the blessing of future miracles.

  • "Waiting along the canal near the parish of Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari Venice"...<br />

 The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of St. Mary of Health), commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon.   • “Christ in front of Paradise - the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari Venezia – Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

A view toward the Altar and Titian’s great painting, peering toward an extraordinary bestowment of artistic reverent beauty of Heaven. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance, and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and is necessitated by a very large church. The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, a Calvary was hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation is a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, artistic brilliance, and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and is necessitated by the large church, having a considerable distance between the altar and the congregation. It marked a new direction in Titian's style that reflected his awareness of the developments in High Renaissance painting further south, in Florence and Rome by artists including Raphael and Michelangelo.  Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

Our Lady of the Rosary feast was instituted to honor Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory. The Rosary, or the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the best prayers to Mary, the Mother of God. Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever gained over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted in the Litany of Loretto. At Belgrade, the Turks were defeated on the Feast of Our Lady ad Nives in 1716. A second victory gained that year on the Octave of the Assumption determined Pope Clement XI to command the Feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church. Leo XIII added the invocation "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loretto. The Feast is in reality a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen. In modern times successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings down God’s blessing on the Church. It is a biblically inspired prayer that is centered on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity.

We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent.

Saint Faustina's legacy is forever intertwined with the annual celebration of Divine Mercy, the recitation of the Divine Mercy chaplet, and the daily Divine Mercy prayer by countless devotees. Born in Poland the third of ten siblings, she answered the calling of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925. While diligently fulfilling her responsibilities and selflessly serving both the sisters and the local community, Sister Faustina nurtured a profound inner life. This spiritual depth included receiving revelations from the Lord Jesus himself, messages that she faithfully documented in her diary, guided by Christ's request and the counsel of her confessors. In an era when some Catholics held a perception of God as a stern judge, potentially leading to despair over the possibility of forgiveness, Jesus deliberately emphasized His mercy and forgiveness for those who acknowledged and confessed their sins. He conveyed to Saint Faustina, "I do not wish to punish aching mankind, but rather, I desire to heal it, drawing it close to My merciful heart." The two radiant rays emanating from Christ's heart, as she explained, symbolize the blood and water that flowed after Jesus' crucifixion. Despite the extraordinary revelations and spiritual gifts that Sister Maria Faustina received, she recognized that these alone did not define holiness. In her diary, she wrote, "Neither graces, revelations, raptures, nor the gifts bestowed upon a soul make it perfect. True perfection lies in the intimate union of the soul with God's will. These gifts adorn the soul but neither constitutes its essence nor its perfection. My sanctity and perfection are rooted in the profound union of my will with God's." May this artistic tribute inspire you to explore the profound depths of faith and mercy exemplified by Saint Faustina and reflect on Divine Mercy's significance in our lives.

The treasure of the Scriptures is a true gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church.” Luke is the Patron Saint of Artists. On my first visit to Rome, I was spellbound by the majestic splendor of the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, a true jewel among Roman churches. This exceptional Marian shrine, an architectural and spiritual masterpiece, has stood as a beacon of faith for over sixteen centuries. August 5th is celebrated as the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, commemorating a miraculous and historically improbable event in 352 AD when an extraordinary snowfall graced Rome, leading to the construction of this sacred basilica. The basilica is a treasure trove of Christian artistic heritage. Among its most captivating features is the mosaic in the central apse, a 13th-century masterpiece by the Franciscan friar Jacopo Torriti. This stunning work, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, shows Mary and Jesus enthroned at the center of a half-dome, framed by early Gothic four-pointed windows. The mosaic elegantly intertwines the themes of queenship and motherhood, portraying Mary as both queen and mother. In the scene of the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel reveals to Mary her divine calling to be the Mother of Jesus, heralding her path to queenship. Gabriel’s promise that her Son will reign on David’s eternal throne solidifies her role as the Queen of Heaven. This sacred event is intricately captured in the mosaic’s details, beckoning observers to engage in profound reflection and awe. Visitors explore the basilica’s museum and encounter a harmonious blend of art and spirituality. Each artifact and painting speaks of divine inspiration and human devotion. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. Behind the triumphal arch is the central apse, whose mosaic, dating to the 1200s, is an incredible euphoric vision. Mary and Jesus sit together at the center of the half-dome enthroned. Below the mosaic is four-pointed windows, which are the earliest examples of gothic architecture in Rome. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of man inspired by God. The apse mosaic, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, is from the late 13th century, by the Franciscan friar, Jacopo Torriti.

  • “Our Lady of Lourdes - Santa Maria dei Miracoli Rome”…<br />

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. Forgoing the Coliseum, we aimed for Piazza del Popolo. Encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture which didn’t take long. We headed toward the twin churches opposite Santa Maria del Popolo. On the right is Santa Maria in Montesanto and on the left is Santa Maria dei Miracoli. According to tradition, the painting of Madonna dei Miracoli originates from a miracle of 1325. A woman praying to an image of The Virgin Mary painted on the walls along the Tiber River to save her drowning son was miraculously answered.  A small Chapel was built in honor of The Virgin Mary and eventually became this extraordinary church. Pilgrims continue to pray for Our Lady’s intercession in the blessing of future miracles.

Our Lady of Lourdes is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, recognized by Roman Catholics in honor of the Marian apparition that occurred in Lourdes, France. Saint Bernadette Soubirous was a fourteen-year-old peasant girl who witnessed Our Lady’s apparition. There was a total of seventeen apparitions over the year 1858. Our Lady told St. Bernadette that we were to pray for the Conversion of Sinners, and she stated, “I am the Immaculate Conception.”  Saint Bernadette was asked to dig in the ground, and a “spring” would erupt. She did as she was told, and to this day the water runs. Nearly six million faithful make the pilgrimage annually, and hundreds of miracles have been reported through these visits. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is an area of ground surrounding the Catholic shrine (Grotto) to Our Lady of Lourdes in the town of Lourdes, France. The Sanctuary is a destination for pilgrimage; sick pilgrims are reputed to be miraculously healed by Lourdes water. This ground is owned and administered by the Roman Catholic Church. Grottos intended as replicas of the one at Our Lady of Lourdes, and other grottos in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes, are often described as "Lourdes grottos." Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage, healing, and even more of faith. Church authorities have recognized over sixty miraculous cures, although there have probably been many more. To people of faith, this is not surprising. It is a continuation of Jesus’ healing miracles—now performed at the intercession of his mother. Some would say that the greater miracles are hidden. Many who visit Lourdes return home with renewed faith and a readiness to serve God in their needy brothers and sisters. There still may be people who doubt the apparitions of Lourdes. “For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible.”

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a conspicuous position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one-third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite reverently quaint interiorly.

  • “Cybo Chapel - Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo Rome”…<br />

This hallowed sanctuary within the Basilica walls hosts an extraordinary collection of masterpieces crafted by some of history's preeminent artists, including luminaries like Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat, and Donato Bramante. Situated as the second side chapel, the renowned "Cappella Cybo" has earned acclaim for the exquisite beauty of its paintings, the opulence of its marble-clad walls, and the eminent significance of the artistic visionaries who contributed to its creation. This sacred space stands as one of the most noteworthy sacral monuments erected in Rome during the latter part of the 17th century. A focal point of the chapel is the monumental altarpiece, a magnum opus rendered in oil on the wall by the esteemed Carlo Maratta, completed in 1686. Depicting the Disputation over the Immaculate Conception with the Four Doctors of the Church—St. Augustine, John Chrysostom, John the Evangelist, and Gregory the Great—the painting serves as a luminous celebration of the Virgin's purity. Anticipation filled my heart as I embarked on a journey to encounter Caravaggio's renowned works, particularly the acclaimed "Crucifixion of Peter." However, my quest was unexpectedly impeded by a vigilant security guard, resolute in blocking the chapel entrance and extinguishing its light whenever I drew near. Undaunted,   I navigated to the rear, capturing elusive glimpses through a telephoto lens, securing images for my reflection. The guardian of the entrance, with unwavering courage, had veiled the authentic paintings, beckoning me to return on another day for a chance at their revelation. Such is the mystique and allure that envelops the Cybo Chapel, a sacred haven where each visit holds the promise of unveiling hidden artistic treasures including this majestic painting of The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel,<br />
and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: ‘Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” In the Santi Francescani's Chapel, I photographed this masterpiece by Bernardino Licinio painted in 1535 of the seated Virgin and Child. On the left are St. Francis, St. Mark, St. Bonaventura, and St. Clare. On the right are St. Anthony, St. Andrew, St. Louis, St. John the Baptist, and the face of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Licinio's portrayal was ‘not for the nobility of expression, but the splendor of the color and sense of motion.’ The aggregate of the artwork involved in Santa Maria Gloriosa is a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. The Basilica di Frari is one of my favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur.

Saint John the Baptist, the great religious reformer was sent by God to prepare the people for the Messiah. His vocation was one of selfless giving. “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11). Scripture tells us that many people followed John looking to him for hope. St. John never allowed himself the false honor of receiving these people for his own glory. He knew his calling was one of preparation. When the time came, he led his disciples to Jesus: “The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’ The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus” (John 1:35-37). At the center of this 17th-century chapel is the baptismal font attributed to Giuseppe Valadier and consisting of a red porphyry stone basin topped by golden sculptures; the elaborate décor of the chapel includes polychrome marble walls, colorful ceiling frescoes, gleaming gold stucco work, commemorative plaques, marble busts of church officials, and the marble altarpiece of the Assumption of the Virgin sculpted by Pietro Bernini – above which is a glowing image of the all-seeing Eye of Providence.

The transcendent and inspiring Regina Pacis and the Christ child is a 20th-century statue of the ‘Queen of Peace’ commissioned by Pope Benedict XV in commemoration of the end of the First World War. “Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.”

  • “Altar of the Crucifix - Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa of the Frari Venice”…<br />

The altar, designed by Baldassare Longhena and executed by the Flemish Giusto Le Court, was built in 1672 by Father Agostino Maffei. On the tympanum, angels hold up the image of Veronica's burial cloth. Between the two marble columns, there are angels holding the tools to the Passion of Christ and two other kneeling at the foot of the crucifix. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. “The Assumption” is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, there was a Calvary hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook.

The ancient Pantheon is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.  Both the height and the diameter of the dome is exactly 142 feet.  The Romans were so far ahead of their time...just imagine the possibilities if the empire had survived. The Pantheon is now an active Catholic church known as Santa Maria Rotonda.  The ancient tradition of dropping rose petals from the open oculus happens at noon every Pentecostal Sunday during Mass.  The rose petals symbolize the descent of the Holy Spirit falling on the apostles and the faithful, and it dates back as early as 600 years after the birth of Christ.  Vigili del Fuoco (firefighters) of Rome, climb on top of the Pantheon’s dome, and drop thousands of rose petals as the choir chants the sequence of Veni Sancte Spiritus.

  • “Crucifixion beyond the entrance to the Abbey of Santa Giustina – Padua”…<br />

Our Pilgrimage finally arrived in Padua and after lunch, we discovered the Abbey of Santa Giustina attached to the Basilica built in the 6th century. It contains the relics of multiple saints (including those of St. Luke the Evangelist). Shaped in the form of a Latin cross, the prodigious Basilica of St. Giustina is one of the most colossal in all of Christianity. The grandeur of the building is enhanced by the Prato della Valle which it overlooks. There are 3 main chapels: the presbytery and 2 chapels for Saints Luke and Matthew that form the transepts and each aisle has six small chapels. The Abbey and the Basilica of St. Anthony were two of my foremost surprises and a must-see on a Pilgrimage to Italy. Unfortunately, pictures were allowed only in St. Giustina, but not in the latter. Initially, I was a bit overwhelmed at the imposing wide open space of the Basilica. The high altar seemed an eternity away. It is difficult to give one a perspective of just how spacious and immense many of these basilicas can be, not only in pictures but in words. The colorful geometric marble floor leads one to the main altar, but only adds to the great depth, size, and dimension of the Basilica. A curiously placed Crucifix standing about 6’ tall is located just inside the colossal nave and appears diminutive below the 26 pillars supporting the 8 cupolas. As most basilicas are traditionally dark depending on the sunlight, the Crucifix was almost a complete faint silhouette only lit by the dome windows above the altar. Standing as close as possible with a telephoto perspective, I was able to reverse the impression of size and portray the grandiosity Christ deserves, as well as the original artist. The distant window light bled over the body and illuminated the darkness. The glow of the original beauty has become radiant. Framed by the brilliant distant archways, the Crucifixion becomes transformed.

For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica.

In the Chapel of St. Maximilian Kolbe in the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari of Venice, Italy, a remarkable testament to human bravery and selflessness is on display. Here, amidst the timeless grandeur of the basilica, the echoes of sacrifice resonate with profound resonance. The selfless act of Number 16670, an anonymous hero is unfurled. Amidst the horrors of the German death camp Auschwitz, he stepped forward, offering his life for a fellow prisoner, Sergeant Francis Gajowniczek. In an act of humility and bravery, a priest volunteered to take Gajowniczek's place. It was later revealed that the priest was Fr. Maximilian Kolbe. Led to the desolation of the "block of death," stripped of dignity and light, they faced the darkness with a defiant song upon their lips. Theirs was not a chorus of despair, but a hymn of solidarity and faith. As days turned to nights and hope flickered in the shadows, Kolbe's unwavering prayer sustained him, even in the face of imminent death. On the eve of the Assumption, only a handful remained, their bodies emaciated but their spirits unbroken. As the jailer approached, intent on administering the final blow, Kolbe, a beacon of divine grace, offered his arm willingly. His sacrifice, a testament to the triumph of the human spirit over tyranny, echoes through the annals of history. Beatified in 1971 and canonized in 1982, St. Maximilian Kolbe's legacy transcends the confines of time and place. A fervent devotee of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, his life was a symphony of service and devotion. Within the Basilica di Frari, amidst its austere façade lies a sanctuary of profound significance—a tribute to the indomitable spirit of those who dared to defy darkness with light.   • "Ancient Crucifix on the wall of the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari - Venice"...<br />

The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. This ancient crucifix with “Golden Jesus” is suspended starkly on one of the rearmost antique walls facing a multitude of Chapels. The juxtaposition of the gold contrasts with the furrowed surface, however displaying a perfect synergy for the reverent display. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.

  • "Church of Santa Fosca bell tower above the Santa Fosca canal - Venice"...<br />

The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica.   • "The little bored angel - Santa Maria del Popolo Rome"...<br />

Not far from my hotel in Roma resides a fairly nondescript exterior of The Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. Encompassed  within its sacred walls is a variety of art work unequaled in the world. The Basilica is comprised of great works by many of the preeminent artists, such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat and Donato Bramante.  “Cappella Cybo” is the second side chapel in the right-hand aisle of the Basilica which is famous for the beauty of its paintings, the preciousness of marble revetments covering its bellissimo walls, and the renowned importance of the artists involved in its construction. The chapel is regarded as one of the most significant sacral monuments erected in Rome in the last quarter of the 17th century.  I knew in advance of the great Caravaggio paintings, especially the “Crucifixion of Peter”; however, I was not prepared for the security guard blocking the doorway and turning off the light to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near.  The guard courageously kept a watchful eye on everyone with a camera in order to protect the integrity of the very famous artwork. I edged to the back, peered around the corner with a telephoto lens and prevailed with a few pictures from a distance of the famous paintings just for my viewing pleasure.  However, as I returned home and upon making a close inspection of the pictures, it was not the Caravaggios I had coveted, but an imposter.  The guard blocked the shallow entrance and within a few steps inside, to the right and left ...the Caravaggios hid from view, as if to tell me to try yet another day. However, another consolation was this tired angel, who seemed less than empathetic with my situation.

After Mass in the Crucifix Chapel on the second morning of the inaugural Pilgrimage I organized, we were joined by our Roman tour guide for the day. As we listened and ventured around the glorious Basilica, my eyes and camera began to wander. I became stupefied by the grand chapel to the right of the main altar with the rising sun peering through the window just below the cupola. I discreetly wandered in and out in hopes it would shine upon the Holy Crib. The right transept is called the Sistine Chapel, containing the elaborate tomb of Pope Sixtus V (1521-90) and decorated with frescoes and reliefs of events from his reign. The chapel centers on a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib, and the burial place of Saint Jerome, the 4th-century Doctor of the Church. The architect Domenico Fontana designed the chapel, which also contains the tomb of Pope Pius V. The main altar in the chapel has four gilded bronze angels by Sebastiano Torregiani, holding up the ciborium, which is a model of the chapel itself. The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. The rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, is used in a sculling manner, also acting as the rudder. For centuries the gondola was the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. It is propelled by a gondolier. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transportation in the city, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. There are just over four hundred gondolas in active service today, virtually all of them used for hire by tourists. In order to become a professional gondolier, you need to obtain a license from the guild. Two hundred years ago, there were 10,000 gondolas in Venice. Although the aristocracy preferred horses to boats through the early Middle-Ages, beginning in the 14th century when horses were outlawed from the streets of Venice, the noble class embraced gondolas as a respectable form of transportation.

The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite small interiorly.  I am not sure if it was ever an active parish but more of a shrine with little room for seating.  The steps wrapping around the front and sides make a perfect destination for relaxation during warm Venetian days.  Interior windows open to the sky which allows for a great deal of sunlight, and as I meandered around I noticed a beautiful crucifix near the confessional.  The strong rays of sunshine illuminated the face of Christ just enough to encourage one to examine their conscience one last time before entering into Sacrament of Confession.

The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, there was a Calvary hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. In the grand narrative of history, Clare of Assisi shines as a luminous figure, embodying unwavering devotion and courageous faith. This Italian saint, deeply connected with Francis of Assisi, carved a path of sanctity that continues to inspire. Clare was not merely a follower but a beacon of feminine spirituality, founding the Order of Poor Clares within the Franciscan tradition. At eighteen, Clare’s heart was ignited by Francis' words. In a moment of profound spiritual awakening, she escaped her family’s expectations, meeting Francis at the altar. There, she shed her worldly trappings, cutting her long hair and exchanging her rich garments for Francis’ rough tunic—a bold declaration of her commitment to a life of poverty and service. Clare’s life at San Damiano was of radical simplicity and deep faith. She served the sick, washed the feet of her fellow nuns, and lived in a community that embraced seclusion and poverty. Despite pressures to relax these strictures, Clare remained steadfast, famously declaring, “I need to be absolved from my sins, but I do not wish to be absolved from the obligation of following Jesus Christ.” One of the most powerful episodes of her life occurred when Saracen invaders threatened the convent. Clare placed the Blessed Sacrament on the walls and prayed, “O God, do these defenseless hearts find solace?” Her faith was so profound that the invaders fled, leaving the convent unharmed. Clare’s life was a continuous prayer, a testament to her connection with the divine. Even in her final moments, she spoke of the light that guided her, saying, “In the story of my life, pain found no dwelling, His light illuminated my steps.” The painting by Dino Carbetta captures this legacy, honoring Clare’s devotion and courage, making her spirit visible and her story told anew, her light continues to guide others on their spiritual journey.

The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. The rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, is used in a sculling manner, also acting as the rudder. For centuries the gondola was the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. It is propelled by a gondolier. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transportation in the city, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. There are just over four hundred gondolas in active service today, virtually all of them used for hire by tourists. In order to become a professional gondolier, you need to obtain a license from the guild. Two hundred years ago, there were 10,000 gondolas in Venice. Although the aristocracy preferred horses to boats through the early Middle-Ages, beginning in the 14th century when horses were outlawed from the streets of Venice, the noble class embraced gondolas as a respectable form of transportation.

The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass in the sacristy. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture, oh, and a stop for lunch. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze that Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

A window illumination view of the Crucifixion, peering toward an extraordinary bestowment of artistic reverent beauty of Heaven. The complexity and aggregate of all the artwork involved in this presentation are a bit overwhelming. It is surely not the norm for the simplistic stylings of the Franciscans. However, the Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. The wood crucifix from 1468, hangs over the entrance of the choir. Traditionally, there was a Calvary hanging above the choir and beside the Crucifix, there are the sculptures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. It is very likely that – thanks to His beauty and relevance – this crucifix was taken as a pattern for many others in Venezia and the Veneto region. On our Pilgrimage of 2019, the second morning in Roma began with Mass at the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. This was my second visit to this perfect Bellissimo Basilica where I found familiar faces and comfort in this exquisite sanctuary. The spiritual treasures found here are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. I could not find the artist who sculpted this lifelike larger than life gold angel, but his expression welcomes all to the blessings of God and His Church. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about Pope John Paul II of suffering and his love of the Holy Mother; “in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing Urbi et Orbi (‘to the city and to the world’). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

After Mass in the Crucifix Chapel on the second morning of the inaugural Pilgrimage I organized, we were joined by our Roman tour guide for the day. As we listened and ventured around the glorious Basilica, my eyes and camera began to wander. I became stupefied by the grand chapel to the right of the main altar with the rising sun peering through the window just below the cupola. I discreetly wandered in and out in hopes it would shine upon the Holy Crib. On my 4th attempt, my judicious endeavor was rewarded. A young woman in a splendid white dress walked directly into the heavenly light. Her luminescence and celestial reverence gave the appearance of a wondrous and radiant angel in admiration of the sacred relic. The right transept is called the Sistine Chapel, containing the elaborate tomb of Pope Sixtus V (1521-90) and decorated with frescoes and reliefs of events from his reign. The chapel centers on a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib, and the burial place of Saint Jerome, the 4th-century Doctor of the Church. The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of man inspired by God.

For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the basilica. As I wondered around this beautiful Basilica, I found a very quaint, but majestic place called the Cesi Chapel.  I was taken by not only the serenity, but the sunlight shining brightly through an oculus in the center of the ceiling. Above the altar is an extravagant fresco which like many of the others in the chapel describes the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Saint Catherine was a martyr who was said to be one of the saints who appeared to counsel St. Joan of Arc who converted hundreds of people to Christianity.

I never knew quite where I was going in Venice, but just followed the canal, or became trapped by the canals with no way of crossing and had to backtrack.  Probably not the best way to traverse the Venice Lagoon.  My last evening in Venice I accidently stumbled on Ponte dei Scalzi, "bridge of the barefoot [monks],” one of only four bridges in Venice to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the Sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I set up my camera facing east in view of the dome and campanile of Chiesa di San Geremia, which contains the relics of Saint Lucy, the patron saint of our eyes.  After taking many images of the descending sun, I decided to follow the sun by way of the church of San Geremia taking a hard left northwest along the Cannaregioa Canal, and taking this photo of the setting sun from the bridge, Ponte delle Guglie.  After the sun set, I found my way back to my favorite restaurant, Hosteria Al Vecio Bragosso.

In 1209, Saint Francis composed the "Primitive Rule" for his friars, drawing directly from Scripture: *"To follow our Lord Jesus Christ’s teachings and walk in his footsteps."* This profound commitment shaped a movement that would forever alter the spiritual landscape of Christendom. Standing in solemn tribute between the Basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme—where our pilgrimage began—and San Giovanni in Laterano—where we later celebrated Mass—this bronze monument honors Italy’s beloved Patron Saint. Erected in 1927 to mark the seventh centenary of his passing, the statue captures the moment Saint Francis and his eleven companions arrived in Rome, humbly seeking Pope Innocent III’s blessing to establish their Order. The Pope’s advisors dismissed Francis’s radical devotion as unfeasible, but a dream changed everything. In his vision, Innocent III saw Francis upholding the very foundation of St. John Lateran—the cathedral of Rome itself—symbolizing his divine calling. Convinced, the Pope approved, leading to the official founding of the Franciscan Order on April 16, 1210. Sculpted by Giuseppe Tonnini, the monument bears a passage from Dante’s “Divine Comedy” (“Paradise”, Canto 11), where the poet exalts Francis: "From this hillside… a sun was born into the world, much like this sun when it is climbing from the Ganges." Here, Dante proclaims Assisi not merely as a place, but as the dawn of a new spiritual light. Dino Carbetta’s painting “Snow” bathes this scene in ethereal tranquility, its gentle snowfall accentuating the sacred aura of the monument. The work invites contemplation, merging history, faith, and art into a singular moment of reverence—and homage not only to Saint Francis but to the enduring power of his vision.

In 1209 Saint Francis composed a simple rule for his friars, the "Primitive Rule," which came from verses in the Bible. The rule was "To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in his footsteps.” This large monument of Italy’s Patron Saint (St. Francis of Assisi) is visually recognizable between the Basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme where we began our pilgrimage and San Giovanni in Laterano where we later enjoyed Mass. It was inaugurated in 1927 to commemorate the seventh centenary of his death. The statue portrays the visit of St Francis to Rome, leading his first eleven followers to seek permission from Pope Innocent III to found a new religious Order. A number of the Pope's counselors considered the mode of life proposed by Francis as unsafe and impractical. However, the Pope dreamt he saw Francis holding up the Basilica of St. John Lateran (the cathedral of Rome, thus the 'home church' of all Christendom) and decided to endorse Francis' Order. This occurred, according to tradition, on April 16, 1210, and constituted the official founding of the Franciscan Order. The bronze monument was sculpted by artist Giuseppe Tonnini. An inscription taken from the eleventh canto, of Paradise of the Divine Comedy, can be seen at the base, in which Dante makes references to Saint Francis: “Between Topino's stream and that which flows down from the hill the blessed Ubaldo chose, from a high peak there hangs a fertile slope; from there Perugia feels both heat and cold at Porta Sole, while behind it sorrow Nocera and Gualdo under their hard yoke. From this hillside, where it abates its rise, a sun was born into the world, much like this sun when it is climbing from the Ganges. Therefore let him who names this site not say, Assisi, which would be to say too little, but Orient, if he would name it rightly.”

  • "High altar of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption - Positano"...<br />

The history of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is closely linked to the Benedictine monastery of St. Mary, which, according to tradition, was built when a Byzantine icon of the Virgin was brought to Positano and venerated thereafter. The Icon belonged to a cargo ship from the East, and offshore of Positano the ship was stopped by a dead calm sea. After unsuccessful attempts to continue sailing, the sailors heard a voice saying “Posa Posa”, meaning, “Put me down, put me down!” (Origin of the name “Positano”). The captain thought this miracle meant that the Virgin wanted to stop there and decided to head for shore. At that point…the ship began to sail again. The sailors disembarked the icon and gave it to the inhabitants of Positano, who chose the Virgin as their patron and built a church in her honor. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a prominent aspect of Positano’s cultural, religious, and architectural landscape. Strategically located in the center of town with the backdrop of the Azzurro Mediterranean Sea, the church’s colorful majolica tiled cupola is one of the town’s iconic symbols. I found this Crucifix inside a small chapel of the ancient church which was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. Santa Maria keeps a blessed and watchful eye over Positano and welcomes all to this beautiful seaside village.

  • “Ancient Roman garden replica of Hercules from Pompey”…<br />

This statue among ancient ruins is probably a 15th or 16th century stone replica I accidently stumbled upon in a Roman garden of the very famous bronze statue of Heracles with club, lion skin and golden apples. The original statue was found neatly buried under tiles with the inscription “FCS” (“fulgor conditum summanium”), indicating that it was struck by lightning then buried on the spot. The priceless statue is Gilt bronze Roman artwork of the 2nd century AD, and located in the Vatican museum.  This image is probably the most unusual of my Italian journey and every bit an accidental surprise.  Upon leaving the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, I decided to walk just over a mile to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.  The street Via Merulana was lined with attractive 5-6 story apartment homes.  Not sure if I was heading in the right direction, I walked into a bottom floor parking garage seeking help, and found an elderly Italian woman sitting in a garden opposite the street. As I walked through the garage to the other side, shockingly I noticed the garden had ancient ruins around the edges with replicas of famous statues as center pieces.  It was as if I’d been transported back to ancient times, and the juxtaposition of the 100 year old newer building seemed aberrant, yet I remembered I was in the Eternal City where civilizations were stacked atop each other for almost 3000 years.  The elderly Italian woman assured me I was heading in the right direction and allowed me a few minutes to photograph the ancient ruins.  She smiled and waved as I left and exclaimed, “Buon Viaggio!” as I walked away.  Her wish for me was “Have a nice trip!” in Italian.

  • “Excitement Abounds As Warm Summer Evening Descends Over Positano” …<br />
After a thrilling descent along the winding cliffs from Sorrento, the first glimpse of Positano stole the breath and stirred the soul. Clinging to the mountainside in cascading tiers of color and light, this legendary village appears more dream than dwelling — a vision conjured from sea mist and sun. Navigating the town’s lone serpentine road three full times, I finally discovered the hidden parking tucked near my hotel, perched high above the scene now immortalized in this photograph. The descent was a pilgrimage — narrow alleys, stone staircases, and the intense heat of late May pressed against every step. But upon reaching the beach and the marina, the weight lifted. The Mediterranean, ablaze with afternoon light, shimmered in hues of sapphire and flame. It was as though heaven itself poured its radiance into the sea. And rising amidst it all stood the Church of Santa Maria Assunta — quiet and eternal, her brilliant majolica dome shimmering like a celestial crown. Since 1159, she has watched over Positano with maternal grace, her gaze cast upon the faithful below and the infinite blue beyond. Nestled between cliff and sea, she stands as both anchor and blessing — a house of prayer and a symbol of divine beauty. Later, crossing the warm sands toward a seaside hotel terrace, I found stillness. Facing north, with the village spread before me like a living fresco, I watched as the sun retreated behind the mountains, casting golden rays across Positano’s vibrant facade. In those final moments of light, camera in hand, I captured the mystical union of nature, architecture, and the sacred — a fleeting hour when time itself stands still. Through this photograph, the soul of Positano is revealed — not just in its beauty, but in its quiet invitation to wonder, to rest, and to believe.

  • Organic Venice - Perpetual Evolution of Splendor, Harmony, and Color ...<br />
Venice, in its essence, is an “organic” masterpiece—shaped by the eternal dance of light, tide, and time. Venice is a city that seems to understand time's passage, gently unveiling its beauty in new ways with each moment. It captures the heart, reminding us that there's always something lovely waiting to be discovered. Upon my arrival from the USA, Venice welcomed me with heavy rain, veiling its grandeur in mist and melancholy. Yet, as the storm began to recede, the clouds parted, and a soft golden light flooded the city, transforming it before my eyes. What had been weary under the storm’s weight now shimmered with a radiant, almost sacred vitality. The sunlight caressed the ancient facades, and the canals seemed to hum with newfound life. Venice bloomed again—its colors rich and deep, the water reflecting the golden embrace of heaven itself. The city, which had rested in silence, now sang with a divine brilliance, as though a celestial painter had brushed its streets with light and hope. I captured this fleeting moment along the shimmering, tranquil canal that flows gracefully in front of the magnificent Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, where the soft glow of sunlight dances on the water's surface, creating an enchanting scene filled with timeless beauty. And then, a serendipitous moment—the travel guru Rick Steves appeared, just 20 feet away, filming his PBS show. Taking advantage of the moment, I called out, “Hey, Rick!” and snapped a photo as he turned, his smile as warm as the golden light illuminating Venice. We shared a brief greeting, and he imparted a few words of wisdom before resuming his filming. As the gentle morning light bathes the ancient streets of Rome, we embark on a pilgrimage of faith, drawn inexorably towards the magnificent Santo Spirito. Nestled in the shadows of the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica, this sacred sanctuary stands as a testament to Divine Mercy, a legacy meticulously nurtured by the revered St. John Paul II.  Each day, at the reverent hour of 3 p.m., congregants assemble to recite the Divine Mercy Chaplet, enveloping the sanctuary in an atmosphere of grace and tranquility. Yet, beneath its architectural splendor lies a narrative woven with threads of compassion and service, echoing through the annals of history. From its humble beginnings in the eighth century as the Santa Maria church in Sassia, devoted to the Virgin Mary, to the founding of Europe's inaugural "Holy Spirit Hospital" in response to the impassioned plea of Pope Innocent III in 1198, this sacred space has been a bastion of solace and healing for countless souls. Within the sanctified precincts of Santo Spirito, a chapel on the right stands as a testament to The Divine Mercy and to the venerable Saint Faustina. Here, the revered statue of the "Apostle of The Divine Mercy," accompanied by her reliquary gifted by the esteemed Holy Father John Paul II, beckons believers to contemplative prayer. Father Peek's dignified gesture elevating the Host for adoration in this captivating photograph touches our hearts. With reverent genuflection, the priest invites us to behold Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, present upon the altar. Let our gaze linger upon the sacred Body of Christ, and within the depths of our souls, may we echo the profound words of adoration: "I adore Thee, O Sacred Body of Jesus Christ, Thou art my Lord and my God; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things."

I am not sure if I am the first to describe Venice as “organic”; however, there has never been a more perfect description to define Venice’s ever changing persona. Venice is perhaps the most uniquely iconic seaside city in the world, and its impression changes by the minute with the ever changing light and active tide coming in and out. Flying into Venice via the USA, I was met with torrential rains in the early morning, which finally gave way to afternoon sunshine. The creaky, wet, gloomy, old, decaying Venice sinking and soaking in the morning rain… opened like flower petals in the springtime at first glimpse of sunlight. The organic lagoon began to blossom as if the decay became antique, the gloom became passion, the creaky became sweet sounds, and the desperate island illuminated with life, color, and hope. This image was taken near a small canal in front of The Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars), known locally as Frari, one of the great churches of Venice. The late afternoon sunlight stimulated the glowing, magical, and saturated Venetian colors.

  • “Fountain of the goddess Roma in People's Square”…<br />

Staying in a hotel which was a converted Monastery, Residenza Di Ripetta is between Piazza del Popolo and the famous Spanish Steps, centers of activity in Roma.  Piazza del Popolo is a harmonious oval piazza situated near Borghese Park. Three churches border the square and located in the center is an ancient obelisk from Heliopolis, Egypt dating from 1300 BC.  Santa Maria del Popolo is the most celebrated of the churches, built in the year 1477 and containing sculptures from Bernini and paintings from one of my favorite artists, Caravaggio.  The fountain on the western end of the square is the Fontana del Nettuno and shows Neptune accompanied by Tritons. The fountain opposite the Neptune Fountain, at the foot of the Pincio Gardens, is known as the Fontana della dea di Roma. The central figure is the goddess Rome, flanked by allegorical figures representing the rivers Tiber and Aniene. Below the goddess is a statue of a she-wolf suckling Remus and Romulus, founders of Rome.  This is a very common and visited site in the Piazza, but I was fortunate to have perfect skies and stationary subjects for the creation of the image.

  • “Mystical Rays of the Evening Sun Shine Above Positano”…<br />

After a thrilling descent along the winding cliffs from Sorrento, the first glimpse of Positano stole the breath and stirred the soul. Clinging to the mountainside in cascading tiers of color and light, this legendary village appears more dream than dwelling — a vision conjured from sea mist and sun. Navigating the town’s lone serpentine road three full times, I finally discovered the hidden parking tucked near my hotel, perched high above the scene now immortalized in this photograph. The descent was a pilgrimage — narrow alleys, stone staircases, and the intense heat of late May pressed against every step. But upon reaching the beach and the marina, the weight lifted. The Mediterranean, ablaze with afternoon light, shimmered in hues of sapphire and flame. It was as though heaven itself poured its radiance into the sea. And rising amidst it all stood the Church of Santa Maria Assunta — quiet and eternal, her brilliant majolica dome shimmering like a celestial crown. Since 1159, she has watched over Positano with maternal grace, her gaze cast upon the faithful below and the infinite blue beyond. Nestled between cliff and sea, she stands as both anchor and blessing — a house of prayer and a symbol of divine beauty. Later, crossing the warm sands toward a seaside hotel terrace, I found stillness. Facing north, with the village spread before me like a living fresco, I watched as the sun retreated behind the mountains, casting golden rays across Positano’s vibrant facade. In those final moments of light, camera in hand, I captured the mystical union of nature, architecture, and the sacred — a fleeting hour when time itself stands still. Through this photograph, the soul of Positano is revealed — not just in its beauty, but in its quiet invitation to wonder, to rest, and to believe.

Ironically, before my Italian journey, I read Rick Steves travel book on Italy and watched all of his shows made in Italy.  It seemed every American tourist had his book in their hands following closely every piece of advice he offered.  As I pondered my impending images, I looked up and there was Rick about 20 feet in front of me.  Sometimes one has moments of brilliance, and mine was to yell…”hey Rick” and snap a photo when he looked.  He actually smiled as I walked up and shook his hand, and dumbfoundedly I shared how much he contributed to my trip.  He was very gracious as we spoke for about five minutes and then he continued producing his next PBS show on the Venice Lagoon including his favorite church, Frari.  As I walked away shocked by my accidental meeting, the clouds parted and the light struck a perfect note along this tiny majestic canal.

  • Venice: A Benediction of Light and Time<br />

On the final day of our sacred pilgrimage, we were carried to the gates of a dream — Venice, that eternal sigh between water and sky. Departing from Padua in the silver hush of morning, we crossed the Venetian Lagoon by private boat, drawn toward the hallowed splendor of the Basilica di San Marco. Beneath its golden domes, we offered our final Mass, a crown upon our journey. After wandering the ornate halls of the Doge’s Palace, we were loosed into the city itself — to taste her, to breathe her, to remember her before the sun would fall and call us away. Fellow pilgrim Patrick and I, kindred in devotion and wonder, raced into the living labyrinth. Eight and a third miles unspooled beneath our feet, though the passing of distance was forgotten in the rapture of discovery. From the solemn majesty of the Basilica dei Frari to the sacred hush surrounding Saint Lucy at Chiesa di San Geremia, every step was a pilgrimage within a pilgrimage. Venice, defiant and sorrowful, offers no clear path. GPS was powerless against her mysteries. We surrendered to her rhythm, capturing her vanishing wonders with cameras that clicked like desperate prayers. Along the Santa Fosca Canal, as afternoon leaned into twilight, the sunlight pierced the hollow windows of abandoned buildings, pouring rivers of gold across crumbling stones. In that fleeting hour, it was as if time itself bowed in mourning, light blessing ruin, beauty embracing decay. When the sky deepened to indigo, we arrived at Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, its humble tables shimmering over the gentle waters. There, with bread, wine, and the soft ache of farewells, Venice began to dissolve into memory — not as a place we had visited, but as a tender ache stitched forever into the soul, luminous and eternal, like a song you hear once, and never forget. From the depths of my Italian heart, I know I will forever long for Venice — a lost paradise glimpsed only once beyond the veil of time.

  • “Father Peek Raises the Consecrated Host for Adoration - The Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

On our 4th gentile morning in Roma before leaving for Sorrento, we walked from our hotel to the Bellissimo Santo Spirito for Mass. Located just steps from St. Peter’s Basilica, the church is the center of the Divine Mercy established by St. John Paul II. Each day at 3 p.m. the congregants assemble to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in this reverent sanctuary containing St. Faustina Kowalska and St. John Paul II relics. The church is distinguished for its beautiful and pious artistic and aesthetic adornment, yet, also has a long history of bringing mercy to the human spirit and body. In the eighth century, there was a church in this place called Santa Maria in Sassia dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name of the church comes from “the Saxon school,” where pilgrims from Northern Europe and Saxon nations received their first spiritual and material assistance. In 1198, at the request of Pope Innocent III, the first “Holy Spirit Hospital” in Europe was built adjacent to the church. The chapel on the right side is dedicated to The Divine Mercy and to Saint Faustina where the “The Apostle of The Divine Mercy” statue resides with her reliquary donated by the Holy Father John Paul II. The reflection of Father Peek in “The Elevation of the Host” is after genuflection in adoration. The priest raises the Host so that the Faithful may also adore Jesus Christ, true God, and true Man present on the altar. Look at the sacred Body of Jesus and then say with all your heart (interiorly): "I adore Thee, O Sacred Body of Jesus Christ, Thou art my Lord and my God; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things."

  • “Saint Luke the Evangelist – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

Luke, one of the Four Evangelists, holds a profound place in the Christian tradition as the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Accounting for over a quarter of its text, more than any other author. He beautifully illustrates the parallel between Christ's life and the Church's. Notably, Luke is the sole Gentile Christian among the Gospel writers. Tradition suggests that he hailed from Antioch and is affectionately referred to as "our beloved physician" by Saint Paul. His Gospel is believed to have been written around 70 A.D. Luke's presence in the Acts of the Apostles is equally significant. In his unwavering faith, Luke stands by Paul through countless journeys, including Rome, Luke remained, attested by Paul himself: "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). Luke also shares a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, particularly Mary. Only in Luke's gospel do we find the treasured accounts of the Annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth with the Magnificat, the Presentation, and the story of Jesus' disappearance in Jerusalem. Luke's contributions extend to the Scriptural verses of the Hail Mary: "Hail Mary, full of grace," spoken at the Annunciation, and "Blessed are you, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus." Luke is honored as the pioneer of Christian iconography, making him a patron saint of artists, doctors, and medical caregivers. His relics are preserved in the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua, Italy. Reading Luke's gospel provides profound insight into his character as someone who had deep compassion for the poor, advocated for the inclusivity of all in God's kingdom, respected and uplifted women, and found hope in God's boundless mercy for all. In his artistry and words, Dino Carbetta gracefully captures the essence of Saint Luke the Evangelist, inspiring all with the profound message of love, compassion, and faith.

  • “St. Peter's Basilica - Madonna of the Column, Dome”…<br />

Our Lady of the Column is a Byzantine Madonna and Child that was painted on a column of Porta Santa marble in the original Basilica of St. Peter (Constantine). There is no detailed information on the original painting available, but from the style, it appears to be 11th-12th century. When the new Basilica was built in the 16th century, the column and painting were preserved; and in 1581 it was placed in a marble frame created by Giacomo della Porta, who designed an altar of exquisite marble with alabaster columns. After the Second Vatican Council, Paul VI honored it with the title of "Mater Ecclesiae". In 1981 John Paul II had a mosaic reproduction of it set on the external wall of the palazzo facing St. Peter's Square, where it can also be seen illuminated at night. The chapel is covered by one of the basilica's minor cupolas which let in light that enhances the colors of the altar. On the vault of the dome are portraits of the Litany of Loreto in the spandrels: St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Cyril of Alexandra, St. John Damascene. Inside the lunettes are the portraits of The Virgin Mother and Child, the Dream of St. Joseph, and the Kings, David and Solomon. This image is one of the multitudes of beautiful images in and around Saint Peter’s Basilica, the most resplendent church in the world.

  • “St. Nicholas and Children in the Snow - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

St. Nicholas, also known as Kris Kringle in Germany, Pere Noel in France, and Father Christmas in Britain, is a beloved figure worldwide, especially among children. He is admired for his boundless love for God and humanity, which transcends cultural boundaries. Nicholas lived in modern-day Turkey during the third century. He lost his parents to an epidemic when he was young, but was raised in a devout Christian family and followed Christ's directive to "Sell what you own and give the money to the poor." Nicholas dedicated his entire inheritance to helping those in need, including the sick and distressed. He became known for his selflessness and was eventually appointed Bishop of Myra at a young age. Nicholas was renowned for his advocacy for the welfare of children, his compassion for sailors and ships, and his benevolence towards the less fortunate. Despite facing exile and imprisonment during the persecution of Christians under Roman Emperor Diocletian, Nicholas remained steadfast in his faith. He stood resilient at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, defending the Church against heresy. Nicholas' life is a testament to fortitude and unwavering commitment. His legacy lives on through countless stories and legends that portray him as a cherished protector and advocate for the underprivileged, a beacon of hope. The modern embodiment of generosity, Santa Claus, is inspired by Nicholas' enduring legacy. In 1823, the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," also known as "The Night Before Christmas," immortalized Nicholas as the bearer of gifts and sweets on Christmas Eve. Art captures the essence of love, compassion, and the enduring magic of giving that St. Nicholas embodies. Through delicate brushstrokes, we see St. Nicholas surrounded by children in snow-kissed scenes, symbolizing warmth, joy, and the true meaning of the holiday season.

  • “Macuteo Roman Obelisk in the Pantheon - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

Originally one of a pair at the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis, the other being the now much shorter Matteiano Obelisk. Moved to the Temple of Isis near Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Found in 1373 near San Macuto. Moved to the front of the Pantheon by Pope Clement XI in 1711 over a fountain by Filippo Barigioni. The Aqua Virgo, one of the eleven aqueducts that supplied ancient Rome with drinking water, served the area of the Campus Martius, but had fallen into disrepair and disuse by the late Middle Ages. It was reconstructed under Pope Nicholas V and consecrated in 1453 as the Acqua Vergine. In 1570, Giacomo della Porta was commissioned under Pope Gregory XIII to oversee a major project to extend the distribution of water from the Vergine to eighteen new public fountains. The Obelisk was originally built by one of the most famous Egyptian Pharaohs about 1300 years before Christ, Ramses II. The cross of Jesus, through his death and resurrection, has conquered all evil and fulfilled the desires of every human person expressed through the diversity of religions that have existed throughout history. The ancient obelisk pointed upward toward the sun when built-in Heliopolis, but now it directs the attention of every pilgrim who views this and other Obelisk’s in Rome to the victorious cross of Christ, protecting them and dispersing any evil that approaches. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on Sept. 14 is a reminder for us to place the cross of Christ over everything that we are and do. Christ wants to claim each one of us entirely and invites us to surrender completely to him. The victory of Jesus on the cross informs everything in our lives and allows us to exclaim, “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your Cross you have redeemed the world.”

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and a tour of the Vatican, lunch with my fellow pilgrim Patrick became an inspiring moment. We decided to forgo the Coliseum in favor of Piazza del Popolo, our hearts set on seeing the renowned Caravaggio paintings in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” had eluded me during a previous visit, The security guard would block the entrance, plunging the chapel into darkness. With great success and spirits high, we ultimately ventured into the lively streets of Rome, where our journey led us to the charming neighborhood of Lucina. We paused for an aperitivo at a bistro, the ancient Basilica of St. Lawrence, built in 366 AD, standing beside us, beckoning for a visit. Upon entering, I was struck by the radiant sunlight streaming through the window, illuminating the majestic figure of an angel. The scene evoked a profound reflection on the sanctity of life and how moments of disappointment can lead to unexpected grace. The angel, reaching out to touch the hand of Christ, was bathed in a divine light, symbolizing the very blessing that we, as pilgrims, had experienced that day. In that sacred space, under the watchful presence of Saint Lawrence, the guardian of the church and a martyr of extraordinary faith, I felt a connection to the deeper meaning of our journey Just as Saint Lawrence’s unwavering devotion and ultimate sacrifice illuminated the path for countless believers, so too does the angelic vision captured in this painting remind us that amid life’s trials, divine intervention is always possible, guiding us toward clarity, joy, and the grace of unexpected blessings. And if you look closely, one of those blessings is the famous painting of the Crucifixion upon the altar, a testament to the enduring power of faith and sacrifice.

  • "Sun hiding behind the Macuteo Obelisk - Roman Pantheon"...<br />

Eventually, one discovers that God finds a way where there is none. A very crowded Pantheon at 3:00 PM in the bright afternoon made creative photography impossible. However, getting on my knees and placing the sun behind the cross of the Obelisk created a phenomenal appeal. All are original, including the landing dove/pigeon and sun flare. The Obelisk was originally built by one of the most famous Egyptian Pharaohs about 1300 years before Christ by Pharaoh Ramses II for the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis and brought to Rome in ancient times. It was rediscovered in 1374 underneath the apse of the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. In the mid-15th century, the obelisk had been erected in the small Piazza di San Macuto some 200 meters east of the Pantheon, where it remained until its 1711 move to the Piazza della Rotonda. It is still called the Obelisco Macutèo after its previous location. Fontana del Pantheon was constructed by Giacomo Della Porta under Pope Gregory XIII in 1575, and the obelisk was added under Pope Clement XI. The city of Rome harbors the most obelisks in the world. There are eight ancient Egyptian and five ancient Roman obelisks. The Romans used special heavy cargo carriers called obelisk ships to transport the monuments down the Nile to Alexandria and from there across the Mediterranean Sea to Rome. On-site, large Roman cranes were employed to erect the monoliths. The obelisk is crowned by a bronze cross, the symbol of Jesus Christ. One idea that can be drawn from this is that Christianity—the cross of Jesus Christ—conquers paganism.  Another idea is that the obelisk represents the human desire for God which is only fulfilled in the Cross of Christ.

  • “Evening Rain Over Positano - Painting by Dino Carbetta”… <br />

The last three days in Positano unfolded like a symphony of contrasts—light and shadow, warmth and cold, sunshine and rain. It began with a glorious sunrise, where the early morning light painted the coastal town in hues of gold. This was followed by a rainy ferry ride to Amalfi, where the Duomo, with its stunning architecture, provided a sanctuary for my camera. The return journey was marked by a relentless downpour, with the wind cutting through the cold air as we sailed back to Positano. Despite the inclement weather, I continued photographing, determined to capture the moment's essence. As we approached Positano, the combination of fog and rain seemed to obscure any hope of a clear shot. But to my surprise, this blend of elements transformed the scene into something ethereal—a surreal, almost mystical vision of the colorful seaside village. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a cornerstone of Positano’s cultural and religious identity, stood resilient in the rain, its ancient walls a testament to faith and history, having been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. The unexpected chill in the air was a stark reminder that even in the southernmost reaches of Italy, the weather can surprise. Lacking proper winter attire, dinner on the hotel terrace was a frigid affair, softened only by the warmth of a propane heater and the comfort of a blanket provided by the restaurant. Yet, with all storms comes light, and just as the evening seemed to close in darkness, the rain ceased, and the sun reappeared, casting a breathtaking glow over the village. Occasionally, one finds themselves in the right place at the right time, and Positano, with its ever-changing moods, proved once again to be Italy’s most photogenic gem. The final painting, a tribute to this unforgettable moment, needed only slight enhancement to capture the mystical beauty that nature had so generously provided.

  • "Madonna and Child with Saints - Chapel of the Franciscan Saints - Basilica dei Frari Venice"...<br />

The altarpiece is depicting the Madonna and Child enthroned. To His right are St. Clare, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis and St. Mark; behind the head of the client: father Antonietto da Venezia; to the left: St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony, St. Louis d'Anjou (Bishop of Toulouse) and Saint Andrew. The artist is Bernardino Licinio and completed in the year 1524. The Basilica di Frari is one of my most favorite churches in all of Italy. Outwardly nondescript, walking through the doorway, one is instantly overwhelmed by its ancient beauty and grandeur. My imagination explodes with a fascinating impression of great history, aesthetic brilliance and the “Holy” who have embarked upon this monumental “Basilica masterpiece!” Although I managed to sneak a few images, photography was restricted on my first visit. However, on our Pilgrimage of 2019, a small entrance fee allowed for unlimited actuations. “Frari,” is a very large Gothic church of the early 15th-century now filled with elaborate paintings and tombs. The interior is light and spacious and claims are often made for the Frari being almost a museum of Venetian Renaissance art. The Assumption of the Virgin is a brilliant large altarpiece painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Titian. It is the largest altarpiece in the city and necessitated by the very large church. This masterpiece of Madonna and Child is a central theme of all the dramatic chapels around Frari to the delight of the faithful. Just like most former tourists of Italy, one yearns for the delectable anamnesis of Gelato. I agree with that memorable thought, but I also hunger and languish for Venice and all its hidden spirituality that most simply overlook such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.

From the northern heights of Positano, where silence lingers just above the bustle, this photograph captures a moment bathed in serenity and sun. After a daring drive from Sorrento, clinging to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, I descended into a world suspended between sea and sky. Positano revealed itself like a vision — a cascade of color tumbling from the mountains into the waiting arms of the Mediterranean. The village, with its sole winding road, required three full circuits before I discovered the tucked-away garage near my hotel, nestled about two-thirds up the vibrant hillside seen here. The journey downward was steep and sun-drenched, a physical trial through narrow walkways and staircases. Yet at the marina’s edge, fatigue gave way to wonder. The late May sun shimmered upon the sea, scattering silver and sapphire into the air. It was a brightness that blinded — and yet, clarified. Framed by overhanging leaves, the scene unfolds like a natural cathedral. The radiant blue sky above and the sea below embrace Positano in a divine spectrum of color and light. Rising at the heart of it all, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta glows in reverent stillness. Her golden majolica dome, a crown of devotion, reflects the light of centuries. Dedicated in 1159 to the Blessed Virgin Mary, she has stood ever since — a sacred sentinel nestled among cascading homes and flowering terraces, her presence both humble and holy. This photograph, taken in the golden hush of afternoon, captures more than beauty. It is an invitation to pause. To peer through the leaves. To behold a place where heaven kisses earth and where every stone, every color, every beam of light sings of the eternal.

  • "The Evening Sun Breaks Through the Clouds Above Positano"... <br />

After a thrilling descent along the winding cliffs from Sorrento, the first glimpse of Positano stole the breath and stirred the soul. Clinging to the mountainside in cascading tiers of color and light, this legendary village appears more dream than dwelling — a vision conjured from sea mist and sun. Navigating the town’s lone serpentine road three full times, I finally discovered the hidden parking tucked near my hotel, perched high above the scene now immortalized in this photograph. The descent was a pilgrimage — narrow alleys, stone staircases, and the intense heat of late May pressed against every step. But upon reaching the beach and the marina, the weight lifted. The Mediterranean, ablaze with afternoon light, shimmered in hues of sapphire and flame. It was as though heaven itself poured its radiance into the sea. And rising amidst it all stood the Church of Santa Maria Assunta — quiet and eternal, her brilliant majolica dome shimmering like a celestial crown. Since 1159, she has watched over Positano with maternal grace, her gaze cast upon the faithful below and the infinite blue beyond. Nestled between cliff and sea, she stands as both anchor and blessing — a house of prayer and a symbol of divine beauty. Later, crossing the warm sands toward a seaside hotel terrace, I found stillness. Facing north, with the village spread before me like a living fresco, I watched as the sun retreated behind the mountains, casting golden rays across Positano’s vibrant facade. In those final moments of light, camera in hand, I captured the mystical union of nature, architecture, and the sacred — a fleeting hour when time itself stands still. Through this photograph, the soul of Positano is revealed — not just in its beauty, but in its quiet invitation to wonder, to rest, and to believe.

  • "Guardian angel helps to illuminate the altar of the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina - Rome"... <br />

Artistic, meaningful, and profound, this is a personal favorite from my 2019 Pilgrimage to Italy. After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. Forgoing the Coliseum, we aimed for Piazza del Popolo. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. Waltzing out in an adrenalin rush having stood so close to the priceless paintings… we decided to take on the bustling Roma. We stumbled into a Bellissimo neighborhood called Lucina and settled at a bistro for an aperitivo. The ancient Basilica of St. Lawrence built in 366 AD, was adjacent to our table and required a visit. As I walked in, I was startled by the brilliant sunlight coming through the window directly upon the majestic angel. The vision reminded me of our precious life and how disappointment sometimes leads to great respite and understanding. The Angel was reaching out touching the hand of Christ becoming illuminated. I know the same happened on this very day for a couple of wide-eyed exploring Pilgrims who metaphorically reached out and were blessed by an uncharacteristic joy and an unexpected grace.

  • "Beautiful spring afternoon on the Rio del Frari - Venice"...<br />

I am not sure if I am the first to describe Venice as “organic”; however, there has never been a more perfect description to define Venice’s ever changing persona.  Venice is perhaps the most uniquely iconic seaside city in the world, and its impression changes by the minute with the ever changing light and active tide coming in and out.  Flying into Venice via the USA, I was met with torrential rains in the early morning, which finally gave way to afternoon sunshine.  The creaky, wet, gloomy, old, decaying Venice sinking and soaking in the morning rain… opened like flower petals in the springtime at first glimpse of sunlight.  The organic lagoon began to blossom as if the decay became antique, the gloom became passion, the creaky became sweet sounds, and the desperate island illuminated with life, color, and hope.  This image was taken along a small canal in front of The Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars), known locally as Frari, one of the great churches of Venice.  Ironically, before my Italian journey, I read Rick Steves travel book on Italy and watched all of his shows made in Italy.  It seemed every American tourist had his book in their hands following closely every piece of advice he offered.  As I pondered my impending images, I looked up and there was Rick about 20 feet in front of me.  Sometimes one has moments of brilliance, and mine was to yell…”hey Rick” and snap a photo when he looked.  He actually smiled as I walked up and shook his hand, and dumbfoundedly I shared how much he contributed to my trip.  He was very gracious as we spoke for about five minutes and then he continued producing his next PBS show on the Venice Lagoon including his favorite church, Frari.  As I walked away shocked by my accidental meeting, the clouds parted and the light struck a perfect note along this tiny majestic canal.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the famed Italian sculptor, originally designed the bridge's angel sculptures in the seventeenth century. Though few of the angels standing today were done by his hand, Bernini's vision for the bridge lives on. Five angel sculptures flank each side of the bridge, with statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the eastern bank. At the base of each sculpture is a line from the Bible in Latin. The 3rd day in Rome on our Italy Pilgrimage with Dino (Sacred Artist Dino Carbetta), Spiritual Director Fr. Kevin Peek and led by 206 Tours, we enjoyed Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Below the altar, is a crystal coffin containing the body of St. Pius X (1904-1914), as one may view in this image.  Pope Pius X is perhaps best remembered for his encouragement of the frequent reception of Holy Communion, especially by children. The second of 10 children in a poor Italian family, Joseph Sarto became Pius X at age 68. He was one of the 20th century’s greatest popes. Ever mindful of his humble origins, Pope Pius stated, “I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor.” He was embarrassed by some of the opulence of the papal court. More interested in politics, Pope Pius encouraged Italian Catholics to become more politically involved. On the 11th anniversary of his election as pope, Europe was plunged into World War I. Pius had foreseen it, but it sickened him, “this is the last affliction the Lord will visit on me. I would gladly give my life to save my poor children from this ghastly scourge.” He died a few weeks after the war began, and was canonized in 1954. His legacy included promoting the practice of daily communion as a source of virtue and holiness, he reformed the liturgy in the Missal and Breviary as well as sacred music and Gregorian chant. He fought against and condemned modernism which is still considered an issue in society and the church today. Our Spiritual guide Father Peek concelebrated this Mass with another 206 Tour group from Memphis, TN. Our pilgrims crossed paths many times and new friendships were formed by all.

  • “Central bronze doors of Saint Paul Outside the Walls with inlaid silver Cross and Stations of Saints Peter and Paul”…<br />

There are three main doors. At the center, is the monumental door in green bronze made by Antonio Maraini, which was placed here in 1931; to its right is the new Holy Door, made of golden bronze, created by the sculptor Enrico Manfrini and erected for the Jubilee of the year 2000. The central door shows episodes relating to the lives and preaching’s of Saints Peter and Paul. A large cross with inlaid silver and embellished with stones of lapis lazuli overlays the door from side to side. The cross on the drawing represents a cross motif in curlicued silver, and this has on its plaques in lapis lazuli. Four on the horizontal bar show the symbols of the Evangelists, and on the vertical bar are the symbols of the Apostles. The reliefs (left to right) on the door show scenes from the lives, apostolates, and martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul, according to the wishes of the abbot of the monastery.   • "The Cross of the Colosseum illuminated in the evening"...<br />

The Colosseum, is an elliptical amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, the largest ever built during the Roman Empire. One of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering in history, its construction started in 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus. Capable of seating 65,000 spectators, it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torch lit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum. The Colosseum is generally regarded by Christians as a site of the martyrdom of large numbers of believers during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, as evidenced by Church history and tradition. A Cross stands exultant in the Colosseum center with a plaque stating: “The amphitheatre, one consecrated to triumphs, entertainments, and the impious worship of pagan gods, is now dedicated to the sufferings of the martyrs purified from impious superstitions.” In viewing many historical sites during my journey in Italy, seeing the iconic Colosseum for the first time…I became awestruck. It is as grand in person as it appears in the media, and it seems to hold a very mystical aura. Climbing the ancient steps inside, one cannot help but feel not only the suffering of its past, but the forgiveness and sacrifice of its present stature. As evening descended on the ancient Colosseum, the sun illuminated the cross. I was determined to capture this amazing image as the security guards circled to kick me out...

  • ”Radiant Saint Teresa of Lisieux - the ‘Little Flower’ - Painting by Dino Carbetta”… <br />

Saint Therese of Lisieux was a woman who discovered a deep source of God's love and an endless love for others. Despite facing many difficulties throughout her life, she remained calm and joyful. She once said, "I prefer the quiet sacrifices of everyday life to the most ecstatic experiences. Even picking up a pin out of love can change someone's life." Her simple message still resonates with millions of people today. Though she only lived for 24 years, Therese believed that her journey was just beginning in serving God, promising to bring goodness to the world from heaven. This promise, known as her "Shower of Roses," continues to flow through the Church. Therese, also known as the "Little Flower," was a Carmelite nun who lived a hidden life in the convent of Lisieux, France. Despite her seemingly uneventful life, she found redemption in quiet endurance and made suffering her mission. She entered the Carmel convent to "save souls and pray for priests," as she said. Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times," and she was canonized in 1925. In 1997, Pope John Paul II named her a Doctor of the Church, making her the third woman to receive this honor. Even her parents were canonized in 2015. Though she was known as Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, she had a profound depth of spiritual maturity that earned her a place among the great spiritual leaders. Her autobiography, "The Story of a Soul," is cherished by many worldwide. As you gaze upon this radiant portrayal, you can't help but be drawn into the world of Saint Thérèse. Her gentle and humble spirit, symbolized by the 'Little Flower,' is radiantly captured in every brushstroke. The delicate colors and intricate details in the painting bring to life the warmth and devotion that characterized her life. Thank you for allowing me to share this poignant piece of art with you.

  • "Madonna of the Angels - The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels – Assisi"...<br />

Portiuncula is a town and a parish situated about three-quarters of a mile from Assisi. The town has grown up around the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels. It was of this little church moved within the Basilica that St. Francis recognized his vocation in the year 1208, and it was where St. Francis spent most of his life. In 1211, the Benedictines gave him the little chapel of St. Mary of the Angels or the Portiuncula, which is a “little portion” of land. The first Franciscan convent was also formed nearby. The Portiuncula was also where St. Francis received the vows of St. Clare. St. Francis died here on October 3, 1226, and on his death-bed, he recommended the chapel to the faithful protection and care of his brothers. Two years before Saint Francis of Assisi died, and when he was 42 years old — one year after he had built the first crib in honor of Our Lord — he went off to a lonely mountain called Mount Alvernia, to prepare himself by forty days of fasting and prayer for the feast of Saint Michael, the greatest of God’s angels. On the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14, Saint Francis received in his hands, feet and side the Sacred Wounds from Our Lord’s own body. Never was a saint more beautifully loved than Saint Francis of Assisi. The wounds Jesus gave him stayed in his hands, feet, and side, and continually bled for two more years, until he died in 1226. This realistic image of St. Francis with the Stigmata on his hands was captured in the Basilica Museum, along with many other historical treasures from his life. Our 2019 Pilgrimage was fortunate to tour this very reverent and spiritual Basilica. The gold-plated statue of the Madonna degli Angeli by the sculptor Colasanti and cast by Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry was put on top of the façade in 1930.

The Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem is located in Rome, in the Esquilino quarter, close to the Aurelian Walls and the Castrense Amphitheatre, between the Basilica of St. John Lateran and Porta Maggiore. The Basilica of the Holy Cross is part of the route of the “Seven Churches” that ancient pilgrims used to visit on foot. Several sources, including an inscription in the church, verify that the Sessorian Palace was owned by the empress St. Helen (c.255-330), Constantine's mother. From the end of the 4th century, it was said that St. Helen had made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, during which she discovered the True Cross on which Christ was crucified and many other relics. It was also said that she wished to set up a shrine in Rome for pilgrims who could not travel to Jerusalem. The first room of the chapel has a Roman-era statue of St. Helen holding the cross. Beneath the statue is a floor believed to contain soil from the Holy Land. Under the protective glass covering the soil are many paper prayers from the faithful. Fragments of the cross were circulating in the West by 348 AD. The earliest historical record of the church, dated to 501 AD, refers to it as "Hierusalem basilica Sessoriani palatii." Architecturally, it is notable that the 4th-century Chapel of St. Helen is quite similar in design to a martyrium that was erected by Constantine in Jerusalem to house a fragment of the True Cross. In 1492, a dramatic discovery was made in the course of repairs to a mosaic: a brick inscribed with the words TITULUS CRUCIS (Title of the Cross). Sealed behind the brick was a fragment of an inscription in wood, with the word "Nazarene" written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Title is mentioned in all four Gospel accounts. This was our first stop on our Pilgrimage of 2019 in Italy. A very propitious, historical, and spiritual beginning to a monumental journey in The Eternal City.

My second evening enjoying the mystical aura of the Veneziano light and color, I once again found myself meandering about without ever having a good idea of my destination.  Leaving the hotel every morning, I always had a semblance of an idea of what I wanted to do, see, and photograph.  However, Italy always seemed to change my plans turning the first corner of the day, only to fall in love once again with the cultural brilliance and colorful antiquity that personifies the Italian landscape.  This was just the beginning of many mornings, days, and evenings of my Italian inauguration.  As I stood gazing down the colorful Tolentini Canal, the evening sun shone perfectly upon the campanile and tower of the Church of St. Nicholas of Tolentino. “Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” JN 8:12

Evangelium vitae, translated in English to "The Gospel of Life", is a papal encyclical promulgated on 25 March 1995 by Pope John Paul II. Among all the crimes which can be committed against life, procured abortion has characteristics making it particularly serious and deplorable. The Second Vatican Council defines abortion, together with infanticide, as an "unspeakable crime." The texts of Sacred Scripture never address the question of deliberate abortion and so do not directly and specifically condemn it. But they show such great respect for the human being in the mother's womb that they require as a logical consequence that God's commandment "You shall not kill" be extended to the unborn child as well. ... Christian Tradition – as the Declaration issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith points out so well – is clear and unanimous, from the beginning up to our own day, in describing abortion as a particularly grave moral disorder. ... Given such unanimity in the doctrinal and disciplinary tradition of the Church, Paul VI was able to declare that this tradition [regarding abortion] is unchanged and unchangeable. Therefore, by the authority which Christ conferred upon Peter and his Successors, in communion with the Bishops – who on various occasions have condemned abortion and who in the aforementioned consultation, albeit dispersed throughout the world, have shown unanimous agreement concerning this doctrine – I declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. This doctrine is based upon the natural law and upon the written Word of God, is transmitted by the Church's Tradition and taught by the ordinary and universal Magisterium.
