  • “Bethlehem Candle - Advent, Mary, and Joseph’s Journey - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
 Rooted in the Christian tradition, the wreath cradles the profound symbolism of the four Advent candles, each representing the impending arrival of Jesus as the illuminating light amidst darkness. Lit consecutively on each Sunday, these candles collectively radiate an increasing glow, symbolizing the approaching celebration of Christmas. A white candle may grace the scene on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, known as the "Christ candle," symbolizing the presence of Jesus. In this sacred preparation journey, the candles hold significance, with each representing a facet of Advent's spiritual anticipation. Echoing the sentiments of Pope Francis, who beautifully expressed, “May we be in this world a ray of that light which shone forth from Bethlehem, bringing joy and peace to the hearts of all men and women.” The second candle, often called the "Bethlehem Candle," stands as a visual ode to Peace, mirroring the hue of the first purple candle. It serves as a poignant reminder of Mary and Joseph's arduous journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, culminating in the miraculous birth of Jesus. Drawing inspiration from the Prophecy Candle, this second luminary evokes the possibility of peace on Earth after the historical tumult and disarray chronicled in the Old Testament. With the advent of Jesus, the harbinger of peace, a new era dawns. Pope Francis's words resonate, affirming that the light of peace emanating from Bethlehem extends its luminosity to the world. As you light the second candle on Sunday, December 8, 2024, let it shine forth, reflecting not only the sacred journey of Mary and Joseph but also the enduring and universal longing for peace on Earth. Compiling the essence of Advent into five evocative images proved both challenging and gratifying. The presence of candles in each visual narrative serves as a sacred beacon, drawing you toward the divine light of Christ within your soul.

  • "Sanctuary of Innocence - Mother Mary's Gentle Embrace Amidst the Holy Innocents - Palette Knife Rendering by Dino Carbetta"<br />
<br />
The Feast of the Holy Innocents solemnly commemorates a tragic event wherein innocent children were brutally slaughtered, becoming the early church's first martyrs and emphasizing the sanctity of human life. Evolving from a day of solemn religious contemplation, it has blossomed into a festive celebration, particularly cherished in Roman Catholic countries. The Flight into Egypt, the Second Sorrow in the Story of the Holy Innocents, swiftly unfolds as Joseph heeds a divine warning delivered through a dream. Fleeing from Herod's sinister intent to annihilate the newborn Christ, Joseph and Mary embark on a perilous journey, grappling with uncertainties and fears. Despite Mary's apprehensions about the desert wilderness, her unwavering trust in God's providence shines through. The couple's decision to uproot their lives to shield the infant Jesus highlights their profound commitment to protecting the sacred life within their family. Noteworthy is the deference to the authority of Saint Joseph, even though Mary is Immaculately Conceived and Jesus is the Word made flesh. Herod, a politically astute and brutal ruler, reacts with paranoia to the news of the newborn king, deceptively feigning homage while plotting the massacre of Bethlehem's male children under two years old. Beyond the historical significance, the Holy Innocents' massacre serves as a poignant reminder of ongoing challenges to the sanctity of life, drawing parallels to contemporary issues like genocide and abortion. Each human life, graced by Jesus' death and resurrection, is a precious treasure destined for eternity. This narrative invites reflection on life's profound value, resonating with the inspirational message that each soul, touched by the divine, holds immeasurable significance in the grandeur of existence. Mother Mary's comforting embrace envelops the innocent children.

  • “Our Lady Star of the Sea - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
"Our Lady, Star of the Sea,” is an ancient and profound title for the Virgin Mary. It derives from the Latin title Stella Maris, which has been in use since the early medieval period. Interestingly, its origin is said to have emerged from a scribal error while translating Mary's name. Initially, Mary's Hebrew name, Miryam, meant 'a drop of the sea,' but through a twist of fate, it transformed into 'Star of the Sea' in Latin, showcasing God's power in exalting the humble. This title symbolizes Mary's role as a guiding star on the path to Christ, a protector and guide for seafarers. Many coastal churches and the Apostleship of the Sea bear the name Stella Maris or Star of the Sea. But what does this mean for those who don't earn our livelihoods on the water? It means we can turn to Mary, our guiding star, to calm the storms in our lives. As St. Bernard of Clairvaux wisely noted, 'If the winds of temptation arise, if you are driven upon the rocks of tribulation, look to the star, call on Mary. If you are tossed upon the waves of pride, ambition, envy, or rivalry, look to the star, and call on Mary. Should anger, avarice, or fleshly desire assail your soul, look at the star, call upon Mary.' In the 9th century, St. Paschasius Radbertus allegorically explained the name, emphasizing that Mary is the 'Star of the Sea' to be followed on the path to Christ, ensuring we don't capsize amid life's storm-tossed waves. Interestingly, Stella Maris was also given to the North Star, Polaris, because of its role as a guidepost, much like Mary on our spiritual journeys. Mary, as Our Lady, Star of the Sea, stands as a beacon of hope and guidance, not just for seafarers but for all of us navigating the tempestuous seas of life."

  • “True Devotion to Mary – Painting by Dino Carbetta” ... <br />
<br />
What does it mean to have true devotion to Mary? St. Louis de Montfort offers deep insights into how we can form a relationship with Our Blessed Mother. Interior: True devotion must flow from the heart, rooted in love and reverence for Mary. Tender: Like a child trusting a loving mother, her help is sought with simplicity and confidence. Holy: This devotion should inspire the imitation of Mary’s humility, faith, purity, charity, and patience. Constant: It keeps one firm in spiritual practices, ensuring unwavering commitment. Disinterested: True devotion is selfless, loving Mary not for what can be gained, but for her worthiness as God’s chosen. One of the most beautiful expressions of Marian devotion is the Rosary, or “Crown of Roses.” Each Hail Mary is like offering Mary a rose, and a complete Rosary forms a crown. The Rosary is more than a recitation; it is a contemplative prayer. As St. John Paul II said, “Whoever recites it is united to Mary in meditating the mysteries of Christ.” "Through the Rosary, Mary guides her devotees through life's challenges, deepening their experience of Jesus' life. Devotion to Mary is often misunderstood, with concerns it might detract from love for Jesus. However, just as loving those dear to someone amplifies love for that person, devotion to Mary deepens love for Christ. The saints offer clear examples: *St. John Paul the Great found that Marian devotion leads directly to Christ: “Christ leads us to His Mother.” *St. Thérèse of Lisieux stated, “Do not be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her enough.” *St. Maximilian Kolbe boldly affirmed, “You can never love her more than Jesus did.” To seek a deeper relationship with Christ, it is necessary to embrace His Mother. Mary’s guidance leads directly to her Son, revealing the fullness of His love. "To seek a deeper union with Christ, embrace His Mother and the love she embodies in this painting."

  • “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
The Assumption of Mary is a profound belief cherished by the Catholic Church, one of the four Marian dogmas. In his apostolic constitution "Munificentissimus Deus," Pope Pius XII officially defined this dogma on 1 November 1950. It proclaims and reveals that the immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, at the end of her earthly life, was taken up, body and soul, into the heavenly glory by God Himself. This momentous declaration finds its roots in the 1854 dogma of the Immaculate Conception, affirming that Mary was conceived free from original sin, and both doctrines are grounded in the understanding of Mary as the Mother of God. "The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta," gracefully captures the essence of this belief, depicting Mary in "the light" of her glory. She exalts the greatness of the Lord and finds joy in God, her savior. Her life reflects the wonders God has bestowed upon her, and she humbly leads others to acknowledge God's holiness. Mary is portrayed as a lowly handmaid who deeply reverences her God, yet she has been exalted to the highest heights. From this position of strength and grace, she becomes a beacon of hope and compassion, assisting the lowly and the poor in finding justice on earth. At the same time, she challenges the rich and powerful to reconsider their attachment to wealth and power as sources of true happiness. Through the Assumption of Mary, we are reminded of the immense love and divine grace that God bestows upon His faithful followers. Mary's life journey is an inspiring example of faith, humility, and dedication, guiding us toward a deeper connection with God and a more compassionate outlook on the world around us. As we contemplate this dogma, let us embrace the awe and wonder it evokes and seek to emulate Mary's virtues in our lives.

  • “Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of the Church - Painting by Dino Carbetta” ...<br />
<br />
In the painting "Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of the Church," we are invited to contemplate Mary's significance within Christianity. This portrayal echoes the decree by the Congregation of Divine Worship, adding the Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church, to the General Roman Calendar. "Standing below the cross, Mary embodies Christ's message of acceptance, love, and human embrace." Despite Scripture's sparse details, Mary's essence has been illuminated through centuries of saintly reflection and papal teachings. Pope Leo XIII emphasized Mary's role as the Mother of the Church in his 1895 encyclical on the rosary, echoing Vatican II's "Lumen Gentium". This culminated in Pope Paul VI's formal designation of her as "Mother of the Church." Subsequent pontiffs, up to Francis, have expanded upon this title, emphasizing Mary's dual role as both Christ's mother and the mother of all believers. Cardinal Sarah highlighted the significance of this celebration, connecting it to the Mystery of the Cross and the Eucharistic Banquet, where Mary's offering to God is paramount. Mary's presence at pivotal moments in salvation history, from the Crucifixion to Pentecost, underscores her ongoing maternal care for the Church. While debates persist over further dogmatic titles like "Mediatrix of All Grace" and "Co-Redemptrix," recognizing her profound influence in the distribution of divine grace, Mary's central role in the Christian faith remains unshakable. As we honor her as Mother of the Church, we acknowledge her as our spiritual mother and queen. Through her intercession and mediation, we are nurtured in God's grace and entrusted to her loving care as members of Christ's Body. In contemplating Mary's profound mysteries, we draw closer to the heart of God and the essence of divine truth. This painting's enigmatic nature guides us to the core of heavenly truth and the limitless heart of God.

  • “The Annunciation of the Lord – Painting by Dino Carbetta”...<br />
<br />
Captures the profound moment described in the Gospel of Luke 1:26-38. In this sacred scene, the angel Gabriel, a messenger of God, appears to Mary in the humble town of Nazareth. The painting imbued with reverence and spiritual depth, portrays the angel's words to Mary: "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." Mary's initial perplexity and trepidation, depicted with delicate brushstrokes, reflect the gravity of the divine message she receives. As Gabriel reassures her, Mary's acceptance of God's will becomes pivotal in salvation history. Through the artful use of color and light, the painting conveys the ethereal presence of the Holy Spirit, symbolized by the radiant glow enveloping Mary. This art captures the essence of Mary's surrender and trust in God's plan with profound insight. Mary's response, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word," is depicted with humility and reverence, inspiring viewers to contemplate the depth of her faith and obedience. The scripture remains the foundation for this artistic interpretation. The painting expressively communicates the timeless message of God's unfathomable love and the transformative power of faith. Viewers are invited to ponder the mystery of the Incarnation and Mary's extraordinary role in God's divine plan as they gaze upon this magnum opus. Through "The Annunciation of the Lord," The artist invites us to encounter the sacred through art, offering a profound visual meditation on the words of Scripture. In a world often filled with noise and distractions, this painting serves as a beacon of spiritual contemplation, guiding us to embrace God's will with the same courage and trust exemplified by the Blessed Virgin Mary. “Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.”

  • “Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
The celebration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary holds profound significance in the tapestry of the Christian faith. This cherished observance bears witness to the reverence and devotion accorded to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, throughout the ages. The choice of September 8th for Mary's birth played a pivotal role in establishing the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. Although the pages of Scripture do not provide a detailed account of Mary's birth, the Gospel of James fills this narrative gap. It serves as a testament to the evolving piety of Christianity. According to this ancient account, Anna and Joachim, Mary's parents, were unable to conceive a child but fervently prayed for one. Their prayers were answered with the promise of a child who would play a vital role in God's plan for the salvation of humanity. This narrative, echoing biblical parallels, underscores the divine presence in Mary's life from its very inception. Saint Augustine poetically describes her as "the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley," emphasizing the transformative nature of her birth on the human condition of love between two individuals becoming a partnership with God. These loving parents embody hope in a world often beset by trials, and the newborn child symbolizes the potential to be a conduit of God's love and peace to all. Mary magnificently embodies this truth. If Jesus represents the perfect embodiment of God's love, Mary foreshadows that love. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary's birth radiates the greatest possible happiness into the world. In this significant image, we witness the transcendent and Apparitional portrayal of Jesus, accompanied by Saints Anne and Joachim, embracing the birth of the Virgin Mary. It is a visual testament to the profound significance of this occasion, offering inspiration and hope to all who contemplate it.

  • “Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
The Queenship of Mary holds profound significance in Catholicism, rooted in her unique role as the Mother of Jesus Christ, recognized as the King. Pope Pius XII's establishment of this feast after declaring the Assumption's dogma adds reverence to her exalted position. The Assumption dogma asserts Mary's sinless life led to her ascent, body, and soul, into heavenly glory. This signifies her closeness to God and participation in salvation's divine plan. As Jesus' mother, her Assumption reflects her intimate link to His redemptive work. Pope Pius XII's encyclical "Ad Caeli Reginam" articulates the feast's purpose. Establishing the Queenship of Mary encourages deeper devotion to her maternal influence. The Pope hoped this celebration would recognize Mary's intercession, care, and peace-bringing role. The analogy of Mary to a rainbow, symbolizing peace's covenant, inspires. Amidst a conflict, Mary's presence offers solace. Like a rainbow after a storm, she represents God's love and mercy amidst adversity. Mary's Queenship reminds of her devotion to her Son's mission and continuous intercession for humanity. In the realm of artistic expression, Mary emerges as a poignant symbol, a bridge unifying humanity and divinity. Her presence resonates with profound depth, radiating boundless compassion that traverses realms. Through the strokes of creative endeavors, we embody the power to explore her significance, capturing the essence of her role as a conduit for unity and peace. In the tapestry of existence, one’s role as an artist and writer becomes a harmonious resonance with Mary's legacy. We are poised to continue her mission of uniting hearts, instilling hope, and kindling the fire of spirituality. Our compositions are not mere artworks; they are vessels that hold the potential to uplift, enlighten, and radiate the eternal truths that Mary embodies.

  • “Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta” … <br />
<br />
The painting illustrates the biblical account of Mary's visit to Elizabeth as narrated in Lk 1:39-45. The Feast of the Visitation, established in the 14th century, calls for unity within the Church. The text is strategically placed between the Annunciation of the Lord and the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, highlighting its significance in the story of salvation. Mary and Elizabeth take the lead in this sacred story, but the presence of Jesus and John the Baptist, even in their mothers' wombs, is subtly profound. As Mary greets Elizabeth, Jesus imparts the joy of messianic salvation to John, causing him to leap with joy within Elizabeth. This reaction is a testament to Jesus's divine presence and the moment's sanctity. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaims in awe, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" Lk 1:42-43. Her words reflect the early Church's devotion to Mary, praising God for His work through her. Mary's response, the Magnificat Lk 1:46-55, is a hymn of humble gratitude, magnifying the Lord for His mercy and might. "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior," she proclaims, attributing her greatness to God's grace. This mirrors the Church's attitude of reverence, where Mary is honored for her role in God's plan, yet all glory is directed to God. One of the revered titles of Mary is the "Ark of the Covenant." Just as the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament symbolized God's presence among the Israelites and was a unifying force for the twelve tribes, Mary, as the new Ark, carries Jesus, God's presence, into the world. True devotion to Mary leads to Jesus, fostering unity and love within the Church. The painting encourages reflection on the Visitation's theological depths and Mary's vital role in this divine mystery.

  • “The Immaculate Heart of Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />
<br />
The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a devotional name used to refer to the interior life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Early Christians were first attracted by the love and virtues of the Heart of Mary. The Gospel itself invited this attention with exquisite discretion and delicacy. Compassion for the Virgin Mother was the first characteristic of this devotion and appeal. It was at the foot of the Cross that the Christian heart first made the association to the Heart of Mary. Simeon's prophecy paved the way and furnished the devotion with one of its favorite formulae and most popular representations: “the heart pierced with a sword.” But Mary was not merely passive at the foot of the Cross; "she cooperated through charity," as St. Augustine says, ‘in the work of our redemption." The veneration of the Heart of Mary is analogous to the worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. There are, however, differences in this analogy as devotion to the heart of Jesus is especially directed to the "divine heart" as overflowing with love for humanity. In the devotion to Mary, however, the attraction is the love of her heart for Jesus and God. The second difference is the nature of the devotion itself: in the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Roman Catholic venerates in a sense of love responding to love, in the devotion to the Heart of Mary, study and imitation hold as important a place as love. The devotion aims to unite humankind to God through Mary's heart, and this process involves the ideas of consecration and reparation. The idea for this painting was to include all the elements of Her perfect Heart, Christ, and His Holy Spirit.

  • “Virgin Mary and Newborn Jesus in Bethlehem - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />
<br />
In the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55), Mary praises the Lord and rejoices in the birth of her son. These words have resonated throughout history, reminding us of Mary's humility, faith, and grace that God has bestowed upon her. This painting captures the tender bond between mother and child and tells the story of Mary's acknowledgement of her humility, she exudes quiet strength and grace and God's enduring mercy through generations. The imagery conveys the power of God's arm, the humbling of the proud, and the exaltation of the lowly. The painting then transitions to a reflection on the imminent arrival of the Savior and the mystery of the Incarnation. The narration delves into the theological significance, emphasizing the divine condescension as God's only begotten Son descends upon Earth. This sacred union with humanity, conceived by the Holy Ghost in a virgin, is described eloquently, emphasizing Christ's dual nature—God with us, yet sharing in our humanity without sin. And Christ’s willingness to share in our human experiences—poverty, prayer, suffering, and guilt. The narrative unfolds, outlining Christ's continuous presence throughout various phases of life, from the cross to Holy Communion, daily Mass, and tabernacles, culminating in the promise of His eternal presence in heaven. The profound journey through the artwork concludes with a powerful call to prayer for the sanctity of life, inspired by Pope Saint John Paul II's Evangelium Vitae. The urgency for a global prayer resonates as an impassioned plea to God, the Creator and lover of life, urging communities, groups, families, and believers to unite in fervent prayer. This expansive portrayal transcends its visual realm, becoming a vessel for profound reflections on faith, the Incarnation, the sanctity of life, and a collective call to prayer—a testament to the enduring power of art to inspire and elevate the human spirit.

  • “Madonna of Tears - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
It serves as a focal point for the devotion to "Our Lady of Tears," which has experienced a resurgence of interest. This devotion, as evidenced by the records of The Marian Library/International Marian Research Institute, is underscored by a profound Rosary dedication to Mary under this title. Additionally, contemporary interpretations of Our Lady of Tears have emerged, signaling the enduring relevance of this devotion. The genesis of this devotion traces back to November 8, 1929, when Sister Amalia experienced a divine encounter while praying fervently in the presence of the Eucharist. Seeking intercession for a loved one's dire illness, Sister Amalia was instructed by Jesus Himself on the efficacy of praying through the tears of His mother, Mary. This pivotal moment led to the formulation of a unique Rosary, comprised of forty-nine small pearls divided into seven decades, reminiscent of the Seven Sorrows of Mary Rosary. This Rosary, adorned with three small pearls and the medal of Our Lady of Tears, became a tangible expression of devotion to Mary's sorrowful tears and unwavering love for humanity. In the painting, Mary, the Sorrowful Mother, is depicted in a contemplative posture, her tears bearing witness to the profound anguish she experienced throughout her son Jesus Christ's life and the redemptive sacrifice He made for humanity. Amidst her tears, Mary personifies the essence of maternal love and compassion, while bearing witness to her son's journey to save the world from sin. This devotion, endorsed by Pope Paul VI, resonates with believers seeking solace and grace through prayer and contemplation of Mary's role in the divine plan of salvation. As the faithful engage with the Madonna of Tears painting and the accompanying Rosary devotion, discover more about Mary's sorrow and Christ's mission, and find comfort in her intercession.

  • “The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta”… <br />
<br />
Amidst the intricacies of Roman Catholicism, a vibrant mosaic of faith, tradition, and spiritual depth unfolds, inviting contemplation and connection, the presentation of Mary resonates like a sacred melody echoing through the corridors of time. This captivating narrative transports us to the revered Temple where Anna and Joachim, devout parents, devotedly consecrated young Mary to the Divine. Rooted in a solemn promise made during Anna's barren season, this act of profound devotion finds its record in the Protoevangelium of James. The narrative seamlessly extends the divine story of the Immaculate Conception and Mary's birth, affirming her sanctity from the very inception of earthly life. Grasping the essence of this feast from a modern Western standpoint may prove challenging, yet the Eastern Church's celebration illuminates a timeless truth: Mary's consecration to God from the very outset of her existence. She transcended earthly bounds, evolving into a sacred temple where God chose to reside. Mary, from the dawn of her life, was devoted to God's divine purpose, emerging as a temple of extraordinary magnificence. In contemplating her story, we are invited to recognize the sacredness within ourselves. Mary's presentation unfolds as a timeless symphony, urging us to embrace our role in the divine narrative. Like Mary, we are temples of God, sanctified not for personal gain but to contribute profoundly to the ongoing work of God's salvation. This narrative beckons us to recognize the sacred purpose within, inspiring us to contribute meaningfully to the symphony of divine creation. In this painting, I try to instil a sense of awe and reverence, inviting one to contemplate the spiritual significance of this moment in Mary's life. To inspire illumination in the sacred narrative and touch the hearts of those who encounter this temporal expression.

<br />
The rich tapestry of faith is often woven with threads of history and tradition. The celebration of the Most Holy Name of Mary, its origins tracing back to the vibrant lands of Spain in the year 1513, serves as a profound reminder of the enduring power of devotion. A timeless journey that started in a particular time and place has blossomed into a cherished moment for the entire Church. Pope Innocent XI, recognizing the beauty and significance of this venerable tradition, embraced it wholeheartedly, extending its embrace to the global congregation. The unity of faith finds its expression in shared rituals, and the celebration of the Most Holy Name of Mary beautifully complements the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, observed every September 12. In the intricate mosaic of Catholic devotion, these celebrations are like twin stars, one radiating the celestial grace of Mary, the other illuminating the majestic persona of Jesus. Each festivity encapsulates a distinct essence, yet they resonate harmoniously, representing the two pillars of divinity. The Holy Name of Mary, a testament to her unwavering virtue and maternal compassion, stands as a symbol of solace and intercession. Just as the name of a beloved carries the power to evoke emotions, Mary's name invokes hope and supplication, a bridge between the human heart and the divine realm. I am embracing the profound significance of these celebrations embarking on this artistic and literary venture. The legacy of the Most Holy Name of Mary and the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus infuses these artistic endeavors with a sense of purpose and inspiration. • "Covenant of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary" by Dino Carbetta<br />
<br />
This painting is more than art; it’s a profound expression of love, honoring the cherished bond between mother and child. Created in loving memory of my dear mother, who passed in 2023, it serves as a heartfelt dedication to her and to all mothers, living and departed, who carry the sacred grace of motherhood. This work also honors the pro-life cause, with all proceeds from its sale benefiting the pro-life movement through the Covenant of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In this piece, I sought to capture the eternal union of the Two Hearts—the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These hearts, as witnessed through Scripture and tradition, beat in perfect harmony, each an emblem of divine love, compassion, and sacrifice. The Father's choice of Mary as Jesus' Mother transcends time and touches on the essence of humanity's salvation. It is through Mary, His mother, that Christ entered the world, and through the love of mothers, earthly and divine, that we are nurtured, protected, and guided. The union of the Two Hearts is woven into the fabric of our faith from the earliest centuries. As Saint Maximilian Kolbe reminded us, we find Jesus through Mary. In Luke 2:19, we are told, “Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” These sacred hearts, ever entwined in love and grace, offer us a model of selflessness and devotion. Devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary is a powerful source of peace and guidance. As Saint Jacinta Marto of Fátima wisely believed, seeking Mary's Immaculate Heart brings us peace—just as seeking the heart of Jesus leads us to eternal life. And so, through this painting, we honor both hearts—earthly and divine—asking for their intercession and guidance in our own journey of faith. This work reminds us that mothers, both spiritual and earthly, provide the love and strength needed to face life’s trials.

  • Immaculate, Queen and Mother of the Church - Painting by Dino Carbetta<br />
<br />
In the profound silence of contemplation, we immerse ourselves in the reverence and beauty of this painting. The artwork captures Mary's purity and divine motherhood, enveloping us in a spiritual aura that transcends earthly existence. St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, a devoted servant of Mary, once asked the Immaculate Conception, "Who are you?" Through his meditations, he discerned that Mary was uniquely the Immaculate Conception, conceived without original sin—a distinction setting her apart from all other descendants of Eve. This singular grace forms the foundation of her role in salvation history. Mary's union with the Holy Spirit is the ultimate expression of divine love, where Uncreated Love meets created love. Saints and visionaries have affirmed this intimate, profound relationship through the ages. In her miraculous encounters at Lourdes, St. Bernadette Soubirous heard Mary declare, "I am the Immaculate Conception." Emphasizing the divine mystery of her being—pure, holy, and eternally united with the Holy Spirit. In the painting, we witness the serene majesty of Mary, crowned as the Queen and Mother of the Church. Her immaculate heart radiates purity and love, inviting the faithful to seek her intercession and embrace her maternal guidance. The painting emphasizes Mary's pivotal role in the divine plan of salvation. Her virginal womb, reserved for the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, signifies the profound mystery of divine love and human redemption. As we gaze upon this sacred image, we draw inspiration from St. Maximilian's prayer, a heartfelt invocation that echoes through time: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." This daily prayer testifies to the enduring faith and devotion that countless souls have placed in Mary's intercession. It reminds us of the transformative power of her immaculate purity and her unwavering commitment to guide us toward her Son.

  • “Our Lady of Sorrows - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
Offers a profound reflection on the Blessed Mother's deep grief, particularly during Christ's passion and death. This evocative work draws viewers into the depths of her sorrow, highlighting the seven sorrows she endured, as foretold by Simeon. His words in Luke 2:34-35 resonate through the ages: "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be contradicted—and you yourself a sword will pierce—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." These sorrows are not mere events but spiritual wounds carved deeply into Mary's heart, each marked by intense anguish. The seven sorrows, central to this piece, include the flight into Egypt, the loss of Jesus in the Temple, Mary's encounter with her Son on the road to Calvary, witnessing His crucifixion, holding His lifeless body after His descent from the cross, and His burial. Each moment is captured in this portrayal of Mary, whose pierced heart symbolizes both Simeon’s prophecy and her immense spiritual suffering. Yet amidst this profound sorrow, there is remarkable strength—an unwavering faith that never faltered. This same faith led Mary to proclaim at the Annunciation, "Let it be done unto me according to thy word." Her steadfast trust in God's plan echoes through each sorrow, offering a powerful testament to faith amid deep grief. Inspired by the rich tradition of Marian iconography, the painting depicts Mary as a central figure in Christ's Passion. It captures both the personal sorrow of a mother and the broader spiritual sorrow of one who shares in her Son's redemptive mission. This work invites reflection on Mary's suffering, boundless faith, and courage, offering solace and inspiration to those who suffer. Like Mary, this painting beckons us to understand the redemptive power of suffering embraced with faith—a timeless message for all who encounter it.

  • "Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque: Apostle of the Sacred Heart - A Painting by Dino Carbetta" <br />
<br />
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, chosen by Christ to rekindle the Church’s awareness of His divine love, unveiled the mysteries of the Sacred Heart—a powerful symbol of His infinite mercy and compassion. Her early life, marked by illness and family struggles, became a journey of profound surrender and unwavering faith. After considering marriage, she responded to God’s call and entered the Visitation Order at 24, where her humility and gentle spirit stood out even under severe criticism and misunderstanding. In December 1674, three years after taking her vows, Margaret Mary received her first vision of Christ, His Sacred Heart ablaze with love. Through her, He called for a renewal of devotion to His heart, asking for reparation for the coldness and ingratitude of the world. He requested frequent Communion, prayer vigils, and the establishment of a feast in honor of His Sacred Heart. Despite facing mockery from her peers and skepticism from theologians, she persevered with the support of Jesuit priest St. Claude de la Colombière, who recognized the divine authenticity of her revelations. Margaret Mary died at 43, her final words, “I need nothing but God, and to lose myself in the heart of Jesus,” capturing the essence of her life’s mission. Her legacy endures in the Church’s devotion to the Sacred Heart, a devotion that has touched millions over the centuries. This painting of Saint Margaret Mary beautifully brings her spiritual journey to life, portraying her in deep contemplation, her heart aligned with the Sacred Heart of Christ she so loved and served. In an age of skepticism, the private revelations of saints like Margaret Mary may seem distant and hard to grasp. Her timeless message reveals that God’s boundless love invites us to deeper communion with Him. Margaret Mary’s life shows that devotion to the Sacred Heart calls us to prayer, reparation, and transformative love.

  • Our Lady of Tears – Painting by Dino Carbetta<br />
<br />
Encapsulates the profound resurgence of devotion to this sacred figure. Delving into the annals of The Marian Library/International Marian Research Institute, one witnesses a deep-rooted devotion to the Rosary and Mary under this evocative title. Contemporary reinterpretations of Our Lady of Tears further emphasize the enduring significance of this devotion, tracing its origins to a divine encounter on November 8, 1929. In a transformative moment, Sister Amalia, enveloped in fervent prayer before the Eucharist, received a celestial directive from Jesus Himself. Guided by this encounter, she unveiled a unique Rosary, symbolizing the Seven Sorrows of Mary and adorned with the medal of Our Lady of Tears. This Rosary, a testament to Mary's sorrowful tears and boundless love, stands as a tangible expression of devotion. Within the painting, Mary, the Sorrowful Mother, assumes a contemplative stance, her tears mirroring the profound anguish she endured alongside her son, Jesus Christ. Through her tears, Mary embodies maternal love and compassion, bearing witness to Christ's redemptive sacrifice for humanity's salvation. Endorsed by Pope Paul VI, this devotion resonates with believers seeking solace and grace through prayer and reflection upon Mary's pivotal role in the divine plan. As devotees engage with the Our Lady of Tears painting and its accompanying Rosary devotion, they delve deeper into Mary's sorrow and Christ's mission, finding solace and guidance through her intercession. • “Love and Pain - Mary and Jesus Before the Climb to Calvary - Painting by Dino Carbetta” ... <br />
<br />
A poignant painting capturing a profound moment in Christian theology. In this scene, Mary and Jesus share a powerful exchange as they meet on the sorrowful journey to Calvary. The accompanying biblical passage underscores the divine wisdom in the seemingly paradoxical nature of Christ's sacrifice. The encounter between Mary and Jesus embodies a depth of emotion that transcends words. Mary, filled with boundless love for her son, meets his gaze with a sorrowful understanding of the impending crucifixion. Their silent interaction speaks volumes, illustrating the deep bond between mother and son, as well as the weight of the sacrifice to come. This moment, known as the Fourth Sorrow, highlights Mary's role as the Sorrowful Mother, foretold by Simeon's prophecy. Despite the darkness of the hour, Mary stands by Jesus with unwavering faith and devotion, offering him solace amidst his suffering. Her acceptance of God's will serves as a model of obedience and surrender to divine providence. Through the lens of faith, we are invited to contemplate the deeper significance of Christ's passion. While the world may view the crucifixion as folly, believers recognize it as the ultimate expression of God's love and wisdom. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength." In contemplating this painting and its accompanying scripture, we are challenged to embrace the mystery of the Cross with humility and faith. Like Mary, we are called to walk alongside Jesus in his suffering, offering our own "yes" to the will of the Father. In doing so, we discover the transformative power of love and the triumph of redemption through Christ's sacrifice.

  • “Our Lady of Grace - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
Among the many miraculous images of the Mother of God through which she deigns to grant her favors, there is one in the monastery church of the Carmelites in Vienna, entitled, Our Lady of Grace. In 1610 a Carmelite, Dominic of Jesus-Mary, found among the votaries of an old altar in the monastery church of Maria della Scala in Rome, an oil painting of the Mother of God, dust-covered and somewhat torn, which grieved him. Taking it into his hands, he shook the dust off it and kneeling venerated it with great devotion. “O pure and holiest Virgin, nothing in the whole world is worthy of touching your holy face, but since I have nothing but this coarse handkerchief, deign to accept my goodwill.” To his great surprise, then the face of the Mother of God appeared to take on life, and smiling sweetly at him, she bowed her head, which thereafter remained inclined. Fearing he was under an illusion, Dominic became troubled, but Mary assured him that his requests would be heard, and he could ask of her with full confidence any favor he might desire. He fell upon his knees and offered himself entirely to the service of Jesus and Mary and asked for the deliverance of one of his benefactor’s souls in purgatory. Mary told him to offer several Masses and other good works; a short time after when he was again praying before the image, Mary appeared to him bearing the soul of his benefactor to Heaven. Dominic begged that all who venerated Mary in this image of Our Lady of Grace might obtain all they requested. In reply, the Virgin gave him this assurance: “All those who devoutly venerate me in this picture and take refuge to me will have their request granted and I will obtain for them many graces; but especially will I hear their prayers for the relief and deliverance of the souls in purgatory.” Dominic soon after placed the image into Maria Della Scala's church so that more Mary devotees may venerate her.

  • “Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
"The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary has long been a source of profound contemplation for devout souls. St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe once embarked on a spiritual inquiry, asking the Immaculate Conception herself, 'Who are you?' His discernment led him to a revelation: She is not God, Adam, Eve, or the Incarnate Word. Mary, the Immaculate Conception, stands apart from the descendants of Eve. While they bear the weight of original sin, she remains untarnished. Indeed, she is the sole Immaculate Conception, her union with the Holy Spirit representing the zenith of love. It's a divine bond where Uncreated Love fuses with created love. St. Bernadette Soubirous received a direct message from the Virgin Mary, declaring, 'I am the Immaculate Conception.' St. Francis of Assisi called Mary the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. St. Maximilian Kolbe further expounded that this union between Mary and the Holy Spirit is interior. The Holy Spirit has resided within her since her very existence and will do so for eternity. Mary's virginal womb serves as a sacred vessel for the divine life of the God-Man. As a Roman Catholic artist, I draw inspiration from St. Maximilian's profound insights. I contemplate them deeply while gazing upon a painting of the Immaculate Conception, reciting the Immaculate Prayer daily. Through my art and words, I aspire to share this profound connection, inspiring others to delve into the depths of faith and love epitomized by the Immaculate Heart."

<br />
The title "Our Lady of Sorrows" bestowed upon our Blessed Mother beckons our attention to her profound suffering and grief, most notably during the passion and death of our Lord. It encompasses the seven sorrows of Mary, as foretold by the Priest Simeon. "This child [Jesus] is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed, and you shall be pierced with a sword so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare" Lk 2:34-35. These seven sorrows of our Blessed Mother weave a poignant narrative: the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, the loss and finding of the child Jesus in the Temple, Mary's encounter with Jesus on His way to Calvary, her presence at the foot of the cross during our Lord's crucifixion, cradling Jesus as He was taken down from the cross, and His burial. In the prophecy of Simeon, a sword would pierce our Blessed Mother's heart, and find its fulfillment. Mary is depicted with her heart exposed and seven swords piercing it, symbolizing her profound sorrows. Her unwavering courage, love, and trust with which Mary embraced each trial, echoing her initial fiat: "Let it be done unto me according to thy word," first spoken at the Annunciation. This unwavering faith is beautifully depicted in the Adoration of the Madonna as a participant in the Passion of Christ, as captured in the iconographic tradition in 1672. Luke 2:34-35 serves as the foundation of this profound portrayal: "He blessed them and said to Mary his mother: 'Behold, this child is set for the fall and the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; and thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.'" In "Our Lady of Sorrows," we witness not only the depths of Mary's sorrow but also the enduring strength of her faith, an inspiration for all who encounter this ethereal work of art.

The title, Our Lady of Sorrows, given to our Blessed Mother focuses on her intense suffering and grief during the passion and death of our Lord. Traditionally, this suffering was not limited to the passion and death event; rather, it comprised the seven sorrows of Mary, which were foretold by the Priest Simeon who proclaimed to Mary, This child [Jesus] is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed and you shall be pierced with a sword so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare (Luke 2:34-35). In all, the prophecy of Simeon that a sword would pierce our Blessed Mother's heart was fulfilled in these events. For this reason, Mary is sometimes depicted with her heart exposed and with seven swords piercing it. Through vibrant hues and emblematic gestures, the artwork aims to evoke contemplation and spirituality, inviting viewers to connect with the heavenly realm. The painting incorporates nuanced symbolism, encouraging a multifaceted exploration of faith and the divine plan. Saint Anne's significance in the Christian tradition lies in her role as the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. Though historical details about her life are scarce, religious texts and apocryphal writings preserve her story. However, through a divine message, Anne was promised a child, and in their old age, she and Joachim were blessed with Mary, a virtuous woman devoted to God. • “Mary Magdalene - Painting by Dino Carbetta” ...<br />
<br />
Mary Magdalene washing the feet of Jesus on Holy Monday is a poignant moment in the Gospels, rich with symbolism and meaning. To understand the event's essence, differentiate between the various Bible accounts. In John's Gospel (12:1-11), the scene unfolds at the home of Lazarus in Bethany, where Mary, identified as Lazarus' contemplative sister, anoints Jesus' feet with costly perfume. This act symbolizes an expression of love and a prefiguration of Jesus' burial. In contrast, Mt (26:6-13) and Mk (14:3-9) recount a similar event at the house of Simon the Leper, where an unnamed woman anoints Jesus' head with oil, eliciting criticism from the disciples. Lk (7:36-50) presents a dinner at the home of Simon the Pharisee, featuring a repentant "sinner" woman who anoints Jesus' feet and receives forgiveness. Distinguishing these accounts is crucial, as they depict separate events involving distinct women. Over time, however, these narratives became intertwined, leading to misunderstandings and misrepresentations. Mary Magdalene's story resonates with many on their journeys of redemption and forgiveness. Contrary to popular misconceptions, there's no biblical evidence to support Mary being a prostitute. She experienced a profound conversion, becoming a devoted follower of Jesus. Her steadfast presence at the crucifixion and her pivotal role as the first witness to the Resurrection exemplify her unwavering faith and love for Jesus. The encounter at the empty tomb reflects her initial confusion and eventual recognition of Jesus, culminating in her commission to proclaim the Resurrection to the disciples. Through Mary Magdalene's eyes, we glimpse the awe and joy of encountering the risen Lord, inviting us to experience Easter's profound significance in our own lives. As we await that glorious day, let us echo her heartfelt response, eagerly seeking and proclaiming, "I have seen the Lord!"

Amidst the winter's embrace, beyond the luminous medieval gates, unfolds the enchanting tableau of the Church of the Assumption of Mary on Lake Bled, Slovenia—a testament to timeless beauty just 180 miles from Venice and a mere ninety-three miles from Trieste, Italy. Journey through the annals of time, where the sacred site, consecrated in 1142, underwent transformative evolution. The Gothic era left its indelible mark in the 15th century, adorning the church with a new presbytery, a freestanding bell tower, and a majestic main altar. The seismic echoes of 1509 compelled a meticulous Baroque renovation, preserving only remnants of the Gothic era—ethereal frescoes and a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. The 17th century heralded another chapter, shaping the church's destiny after an earthquake. The opulent gold-plated main altar, featuring the Virgin Mary, has stood as a pinnacle since 1747. Side altars dedicated to St. Sebastian, St. Magdalena, and St. Anna emerged in the late 17th century, adding to the church's splendor. The 177-foot tower chimes three bells, marking the passage of time. The architectural marvel extends beyond the church—ancillary buildings, enduring walls, and a monumental staircase with a symbolic 99 steps. A spiritual focal point, the wishing bell embodies a cherished tradition. Legend has it that ringing the bell and paying homage to the Virgin Mary grants wishes—a testament to enduring faith. These seven sorrows of our Blessed Mother included the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt; the loss and finding of the child Jesus in the Temple; Mary's meeting of Jesus on His way to Calvary; Mary's standing at the foot of the cross when our Lord was crucified; her holding of Jesus when He was taken down from the cross; and then our Lord's burial. In all, the prophecy of Simeon that a sword would pierce our Blessed Mother's heart was fulfilled in these events. For this reason, Mary is sometimes depicted with her heart exposed and with seven swords piercing it. More importantly, each new suffering was received with the courage, love, and trust that echoed her fiat, let it be done unto me according to thy word, first uttered at the Annunciation. Adoration of the Madonna as a participant in the Passion of Christ is the image of the iconographic tradition finished in 1672. Luke 2:34-35 "And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall and the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed."

Sixth Sorrow: The Crucifixion and Descent from the Cross: After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body” (Jn 19:38). Saying, “It is finished,” Jesus bows his head and dies. Mary remembers his words at the Passover meal: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you” (Lk 22:20). The dreaded time is now: the precious blood of her son is poured out for all humankind. The covenant is sealed. Jesus, her son, the Son of God, is dead. In her heart, Mary dies with him. Two broken hearts—one pierced with a spear, one pierced with sorrow—become one: Jesus and Mary, forever united for the whole human family. Mary’s sorrow is all the greater because of the greatness of her love. Jesus’ body is taken down from the cross and placed in her arms. Mary embraces her son with a love beyond words, beyond grief itself. For now, it is the grief of a consummate sorrow. She, who had given birth to divinity, now presses the bloodied and battered remains of his humanity close to her sorrowful and shattered heart. “Let it be done according to thy will, Lord,” she prays. • “Virgin Mary in front of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
Transports patrons into the heart of a sacred narrative steeped in faith and miracles. The painting embodies the profound devotion surrounding the Marian Apparition at Lourdes, France, where Saint Bernadette Soubirous, a humble peasant girl, beheld visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1858. These celestial encounters, totaling seventeen, unfolded a message of hope and redemption for humanity. "In the serene environs of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, Mary's presence radiates with the embrace of motherly love and the ineffable grace of the divine." She imparted to Bernadette the call for prayer and the declaration, "I am the Immaculate Conception," affirming her purity and intercessory power. The act of digging at Mary's behest, yielding a miraculous spring whose waters are believed to heal, underscores the mystical essence of the site. Millions visit Lourdes annually for spiritual and physical renewal. The Sanctuary, enveloping the sacred Grotto, serves as a beacon of devotion and a testament to the enduring vitality of Catholic tradition. Countless testimonials attest to the profound healing experienced by pilgrims, affirming the sanctity of this hallowed ground. Lourdes has transcended its physical boundaries to become a realm where faith converges with the miraculous, standing as a testament to the power of prayer and the intercession of the Virgin Mary. Yet, beyond the tangible miracles, Lourdes fosters a deeper transformation—a renewal of faith and a recommitment to serving the marginalized and afflicted. Lourdes remains a bastion of faith, where the divine intersects with the human experience. The saying goes, "For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible." The painting's brushstrokes invite us to embrace faith's mysteries and the enduring power of divine love.

The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, Saint Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. I found Saint Mary in a spectacular monument to Cardinal Agostino Favoriti, 1685, by Filippo Carcani. The famous 17th-century cardinal is shown seated at a desk behind large allegorical figures of Fortitude (with the lion) and Saint Mary representing religion. Of the very large monument, Mother Mary stood out to me, as one cannot help feeling blessed by her compassionate presence, and the luminescent glow of light gently descending upon her face, revealing her abiding love for her precious son. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about Pope John Paul II of suffering and his love of the Holy Mother; “in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing Urbi et Orbi (‘to the city and the world’). “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

On my first visit to Rome, I was spellbound by the majestic splendor of the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, a true jewel among Roman churches. This exceptional Marian shrine, an architectural and spiritual masterpiece, has stood as a beacon of faith for over sixteen centuries. August 5th is celebrated as the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, commemorating a miraculous and historically improbable event in 352 AD when an extraordinary snowfall graced Rome, leading to the construction of this sacred basilica. The basilica is a treasure trove of Christian artistic heritage. Among its most captivating features is the mosaic in the central apse, a 13th-century masterpiece by the Franciscan friar Jacopo Torriti. This stunning work, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, shows Mary and Jesus enthroned at the center of a half-dome, framed by early Gothic four-pointed windows. The mosaic elegantly intertwines the themes of queenship and motherhood, portraying Mary as both queen and mother. In the scene of the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel reveals to Mary her divine calling to be the Mother of Jesus, heralding her path to queenship. Gabriel’s promise that her Son will reign on David’s eternal throne solidifies her role as the Queen of Heaven. This sacred event is intricately captured in the mosaic’s details, beckoning observers to engage in profound reflection and awe. Visitors explore the basilica’s museum and encounter a harmonious blend of art and spirituality. Each artifact and painting speaks of divine inspiration and human devotion. The beauty and holiness of St. Mary Major leave an indelible impression on all who enter, offering a profound experience where art and faith converge in a timeless embrace. This hallowed ground calls each visitor to meditate on the divine and the eternal, elevating their hearts and minds to a higher realm of spiritual and artistic appreciation.

Embarking on this artistic journey is a deep, reflective experience. The canvas graciously hosts the expression of my imaginative essence, enabling a tender exploration of the intricacies surrounding the imminent Mother of Christ with profound empathy and understanding. I find myself captivated by the authentic and tender expression emanating from the divine radiance of the Holy Spirit within her essence. Throughout the nuanced process of creation, my musings invariably gravitated toward my venerable Maternal figure, whose boundless love and nurturing served as an inspiring wellspring. Endowed with blessings of unfathomable magnitude, she embarked on a courageous odyssey, irrevocably altering the trajectory of humanity. Through her steadfast devotion and unwavering trust in the Divine, she emerges as an enduring beacon of optimism, guiding souls toward the transcendental path. Her unassuming heart acknowledges her divine role as a servant of the Divine, a reflection of boundless mercy extending through generations to those who revere the Supreme. It extols the divine strength fortifying the unpretentious and humbling the haughty, illustrating divine justice upholding the oppressed and showering the indigent with abundance. Mary's unwavering faith and the divine grace bestowed upon her elevate her to a timeless symbol—incarnating hope, love, and devotion across epochs. As observers engage with the painting, my profound aspiration is for them to discern the beauty and profound significance embodied by the Blessed Virgin Mary, to be stirred by her celestial presence, and to recognize the enduring impact she continues to exert on the spiritual odyssey of humanity. May this artistic creation stand as an elevated beacon, impelling all to embrace the profound realms of faith, love, and devotion, finding solace in the enduring legacy of the Virgin Mother.

  • “Presentation of the Lord – Painting by Dino Carbetta” … <br />
<br />
“When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” by the dictate in the law of the Lord.” ~Luke 2:22–24. In this poignant portrayal, we witness Mary and Joseph's pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem, a faithful observance of the Law of Moses that mandates the presentation of the infant Jesus to the Lord. This image conveys the solemnity of this moment, portraying the couple's commitment to obeying tradition. Illustrating Jesus alongside turtledove offerings signifies obedience, creating a profound link between biblical narratives and modern rituals. Delving into the significance of the forty days following Jesus' birth, the painting underscores Mary's purification, emphasizing the enduring importance of obedience in the divine context. The associated feast, known by various names such as the "Presentation in the Temple" and "Candlemass," involves the use of lighted candles, symbolizing Jesus as a "light for revelation to the Gentiles." At the heart of the celebration is the encounter of Simeon and Anna with the Christ Child in the Temple. Simeon's prophetic words foreshadow the sacrificial sorrow that will pierce Mary's Immaculate Heart, highlighting the depth of sacrifice for our salvation. Mary's consent becomes a conduit for God's grace and Joseph's presentation of Jesus embodies our offering to the Father and the aspiration that others may witness the divine presence within us. This inspirational painting's artistic expression captures the essence of the Presentation of the Lord, inviting us to participate actively in its profound and timeless significance.

John Bosco, a revered figure in 19th-century Italy. This Italian Catholic priest, educator, and saint found his calling amidst the challenges of industrialization in Turin. The artwork captures Don Bosco's unwavering dedication to the underprivileged. It also highlights his revolutionary teaching method, the Salesian Preventive System, which emphasizes love over punishment. Don Bosco's profound devotion to the Virgin Mary in creating “Mary Help of Christians.” This devotion served as the foundation of the Salesians of Don Bosco, a congregation committed to uplifting the marginalized. Don Bosco collaborated with Maria Domenica Mazzarello to found the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, now the Salesian Sisters, who care for and educate impoverished girls. The imprint of Don Bosco's teachings on young minds, particularly that of Dominic Savio, whose biography he penned, contributed to Savio's Canonization. Don Bosco initiated mutual aid societies, offering financial support to migrant Catholic workers in Turin. April 18, 1869, marked a significant moment as Don Bosco connected the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians with the (ADMA), an accessible association that embodied spirituality and the Salesian mission. Don Bosco founded the Salesian Bulletin in 1875, a publication that persists in 50 editions and 30 languages, disseminating his teachings globally. He also gave birth to the Association of Salesian Cooperators, a laity movement sharing the same educational mission for the poor. Pope Pius XI Canonized Don Bosco in 1934, acknowledging his profound contributions. This painting beautifully captures the essence of young Don Bosco, inviting viewers into his world of love, education, and devotion to the marginalized. <br />
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi is located outside the first city walls, in Piazza del Vescovado. It was the heart of the medieval bishop's citadel and center of religious power until the 11th century when it gave the title of the Cathedral to San Rufino. According to tradition, the first Cathedral of Assisi was built on this site close to the Roman city walls in the 4th century. The crypt under the apse of the present church, which is the oldest surviving part of the structure, seems to date to the 9th or 10th century. St. Francis was baptized in the temple. The interior has a basilica plan with three naves, separated by pillars. In the early Middle Ages, it was an episcopal residence. In 1035, at the time of Bishop Ugone, the title of Cathedral was transferred from Santa Maria Maggiore to the church of San Rufino, where the relics of the patron saint were kept. San Francesco was a guest of Bishop Guido I several times in the adjacent Palazzo Vescovile, in front of which he stripped off his clothes, nurturing a special bond with the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. A stone outside the apse bears witness to works carried out at the time of Francis and Bishop Guido in the year 1216. I found the ancient church to be uncomplicated, yet comforting and reverent. The primitive and recently discovered catacombs below, reveal their age and status throughout history. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  • Madonna of Victory and the Rosary - Painting by Dino Carbetta<br />
<br />
 Honors the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary celebrated on October 7. Originally designated as "Our Lady of Victory" by Pope Pius V, this feast commemorates the decisive Battle of Lepanto in 1571 amidst the looming specter of the imminent danger posed by the formidable Ottoman fleet, Pope Pius V implored Europe to unite in prayer, leading a solemn rosary procession in Rome. The painting captures this pivotal moment, depicting the devout supplication of the faithful and the divine intervention that ensued. The Battle of Lepanto marked a turning point in history as the Holy League miraculously vanquished the Ottoman armada, liberating thousands of captive Christians. Pius V attributed this triumph to the intercession of the Mother of God, bestowing upon the world the enduring legacy of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The significance of Mary's intercession resurfaced during the Battle of Vienna in 1683, where Blessed Marco d’Aviano rallied the besieged Christian forces, urging them to seek solace and strength through the rosary. Under the divine protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Polish relief army secured a resounding victory, thwarting the Ottoman threat to Christendom once again. This artwork serves as a poignant reminder of Mary's unwavering guidance and the transformative power of prayer throughout history. The Queen of Heaven continues to lead the faithful in their spiritual battles, offering solace and hope to all who seek her intercession. In our contemporary age, beset by myriad challenges, Mary beckons us to emulate the faith and resilience of our ancestors, trusting in the enduring promise of redemption and salvation. Through the timeless message conveyed by "Madonna of Victory and the Rosary," viewers are inspired to embrace the fighting faith of Christianity, fortified by the unwavering support of Our Lady, who intercedes on behalf of humanity with boundless love and compassion.

<br />
The Church of St. Magdalene resides in a small village located in the Dolomites of Italy. Both, the village and the church, are symbols of the Val di Funes. This tiny picturesque village of just 377 people is located in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Northern Italy. Historically, the church was built where the miraculous image of Santa Maddalena was washed up by the Fopal River. Saint Mary Magdalene church is mentioned beginning in 1394. The current form of the nave with a sloping base and a slightly grooved roof cornice, with pear and round bar on the pointed arch portal with a red chalk inscription, was complete in 1492. The mural exterior is the Crucifix on the gable in a niche with a donkey's back, weather-beaten, early XVI century. St. Christopher is lively and virtuoso in movement with a fluttering, wrinkled robe. Interiorly, the keystones on the vault, are bust portraits of Mary with the Christ Child and saints. The valley, as you can see, Val di Funes is stunningly beautiful. Summer, it’s very green and dotted with colorful flowers. Winter, it’s covered with snow, and the ragged Dolomite peaks, pierce the sky toward the heavens. Mary Magdalene is the first among the women following Jesus to proclaim Him as having overcome death. She is the first to announce the joyful message of Easter. But she also proved she was among those who loved Him most when she stood at the foot of the Cross on Mount Calvary together with Mary, His Mother, and the disciple, St. John. She did not deny him or run away in fear as the other disciples did, but remained close to Him every moment, up to and including the tomb. The Italian Roe Deer rejoice in the beauty of God’s creation.

  • "Three Young Witnesses - The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima – Painting by Dino Carbetta"…<br />
<br />
Francisco and Jacinta, both under the age of 12, are the youngest non-martyred saints to have been canonized in the history of the Church. They tended the families' sheep with their cousin Lucia Santo in the fields of Fatima, Portugal, where they witnessed the apparition of Mary, also known as Our Lady of Fatima. The first appearance happened in 1917, during which Our Lady encouraged the children to recite the Rosary and make sacrifices for the conversion of sinners. The siblings prayed and shared their food with beggars, sacrificing their hunger and thirst for their cause. In 1918, The children contracted the Spanish flu, and Our Lady visited them again, promising to take them to heaven soon. Francisco passed away in 1919, still longing for his first Communion. Jacinta's health deteriorated, and she underwent surgery and was hospitalized, but she eventually passed away in 1920. Francisco and Jacinta were later canonized in 2017, by Pope Francis, highlighting the profound lesson that even the youngest can achieve sainthood. From May 13 to October 13, 1917, the children received several appearances of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, amidst Europe's wartime strife and Portugal's internal upheaval. Mary's message emphasized the importance of prayer, penance, and devotion, including a plea for the conversion of Russia, which resonated deeply with a world yearning for peace amidst chaos. On October 13, 1917, up to 90,000 people gathered at the Fatima site to witness the culminating event of Mary's message. In this painting, the serene faces of Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia stand as a testament to their extraordinary faith. The young visionaries and their cousin Lucia, who became a nun, are buried in the Fatima Basilica. Pope Francis canonized them on the 100th anniversary of the first apparition. Their message focused on prayer, devotion to Mary's Immaculate Heart, and the Rosary.

<br />
Our Lady of the Rosary feast was instituted to honor Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory. The Rosary, or the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the best prayers to Mary, the Mother of God. Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever gained over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted in the Litany of Loretto. At Belgrade, the Turks were defeated on the Feast of Our Lady ad Nives in 1716. A second victory gained that year on the Octave of the Assumption determined Pope Clement XI to command the Feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church. Leo XIII added the invocation "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loretto. The Feast is in reality a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen. In modern times successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings down God’s blessing on the Church. It is a biblically inspired prayer that is centered on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity.

Transports viewers into the heart of a sacred narrative steeped in faith and miracles. This captivating artwork embodies the profound devotion surrounding the Marian Apparition at Lourdes, France, in 1858, where Saint Bernadette Soubirous witnessed visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These celestial encounters, numbering seventeen, unfolded a message of hope and redemption for humanity. "In the serene environs of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, Mary's presence radiates with the embrace of motherly love and the ineffable grace of the divine." Imparting to Bernadette the call for prayer and the declaration, "I am the Immaculate Conception," affirming her purity and intercessory power. The act of digging at Mary's behest, yielding a miraculous spring whose waters are believed to heal, underscores the mystical essence of the site, and millions visit Lourdes annually. • “Saint Luke the Evangelist – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
Luke, one of the Four Evangelists, holds a profound place in the Christian tradition as the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Accounting for over a quarter of its text, more than any other author. He beautifully illustrates the parallel between Christ's life and the Church's. Notably, Luke is the sole Gentile Christian among the Gospel writers. Tradition suggests that he hailed from Antioch and is affectionately referred to as "our beloved physician" by Saint Paul. His Gospel is believed to have been written around 70 A.D. Luke's presence in the Acts of the Apostles is equally significant. In his unwavering faith, Luke stands by Paul through countless journeys, including Rome, Luke remained, attested by Paul himself: "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). Luke also shares a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, particularly Mary. Only in Luke's gospel do we find the treasured accounts of the Annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth with the Magnificat, the Presentation, and the story of Jesus' disappearance in Jerusalem. Luke's contributions extend to the Scriptural verses of the Hail Mary: "Hail Mary, full of grace," spoken at the Annunciation, and "Blessed are you, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus." Luke is honored as the pioneer of Christian iconography, making him a patron saint of artists, doctors, and medical caregivers. His relics are preserved in the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua, Italy. Reading Luke's gospel provides profound insight into his character as someone who had deep compassion for the poor, advocated for the inclusivity of all in God's kingdom, respected and uplifted women, and found hope in God's boundless mercy for all. In his artistry and words, Dino Carbetta gracefully captures the essence of Saint Luke the Evangelist, inspiring all with the profound message of love, compassion, and faith.

  • “Our Lady of the Holy Rosary - Battle of Lepanto - Painting by Dino Carbetta” ...<br />
<br />
The feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary stands as a testament to faith, unity, and divine intervention. It was established to honor the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Christian triumph over the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Lepanto on that fateful day of October 7, 1571. In a world rife with uncertainty, Pope St. Pius V and devout Christians turned to the Rosary, also known as the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as their spiritual anchor and weapon of choice. Lepanto, pivotal in history, witnessed a resounding victory for Christian forces, one that would go down in history as perhaps the most complete defeat ever inflicted upon the Ottoman Empire. The invocation "Help of Christians" found its place in the Litany of Loreto. A second triumph followed shortly after, on the Octave of the Assumption, prompting Pope Clement XI to decree the universal celebration of the Feast of the Rosary. "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us." This feast is a radiant festival of gratitude, a heartfelt recognition of the countless blessings that have been poured upon Christendom through the Rosary, a gift from our beloved Queen, Mary. In our modern era, successive popes have echoed the call to pray the Rosary. This form of contemplative prayer, both mental and vocal, serves as a conduit for God's blessings upon His Church. It is a prayer deeply rooted in the Scriptures, guiding us to meditate on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was intimately connected with her Son in His redemptive work. As we reflect upon the Battle of Lepanto and the enduring power of the Rosary, let us remember that it is not merely a historical event but a spiritual beacon, a testament to the unwavering faith of those who turned to Our Lady in their hour of need. It continues to inspire us today, reminding us of the profound connection between faith, prayer, and divine intervention.

  • “Madonna illuminates the altar of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, Assisi”…<br />
<br />
Santa Maria Sopra Minerva is the church dedicated to Mary, which was built over a Roman temple to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. Parts of the Roman temple which dates from the time of Augustus (63 BC-AD 14) remain. As Christianity became official in the Roman Empire, the Temple became abandoned. Benedictine monks restored the temple, and the Italian Renaissance inspired a newfound appreciation for classical art and architecture. In 1539, Pope Paolo III ordered the Temple of Minerva to be completely restored and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Queen of True Wisdom. The temple then took the name of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. The six imposing Corinthian columns and the entire Roman façade are still intact after 2,000 years along with the towering Campanile. As the center of ancient Assisi, and still prominent today… this former Temple and now sacred church seems to be at the heart of the existence of Assisi. Additionally, the famous artist Giotto painted frescos of the life of Saint Francis which adorn the walls of the Saint’s Basilica including images of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Ironically, Giotto’s placing of St. Francis in the local scenery was the first of its kind, thus the beginning of the Renaissance. In 1791 it was consecrated on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady. And, after the Apparition of Our Lady as the Immaculate Conception seen by St. Bernadette which took place in Lourdes, France…this statue of the Virgin Mary was erected in the hollowed earth behind the altar. As I hiked the steep grade upward to the top of Assisi, a respite seemed to arise from the ancient Roman era and took me back in time. The imposing columns gave way from the ancient exterior progressing inside discovering the serene and peaceful Virgin Mary, Queen of True Wisdom.

On our Pilgrimage of 2019, the second morning in Roma began with Mass at the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. This was my second visit to this perfect Bellissimo Basilica where I found a familiar face and comfort in this exquisite statue and expression of true Love. The spiritual treasures found here are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. I found Saint Mary in a spectacular monument to Cardinal Agostino Favoriti, 1685, by Filippo Carcani. Mother Mary stood out to me, as one cannot help feeling blessed by her compassionate presence, and the luminescent glow of light gently descending upon her face, revealing her abiding love and ultimate suffering remembering her precious son. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about Pope John Paul II of suffering and his love of the Holy Mother; “in that last Easter Sunday of his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing Urbi et Orbi (‘to the city and to the world’). Amen.”

  • “The Compassion of Our Lady Friday” – Painting by Dino Carbetta<br />
<br />
This sacred painting evokes a profound and heartrending sorrow, portraying the Blessed Virgin Mary beneath the crushing weight of her Son’s cross. It is a moment suspended in anguish, yet illumined by divine love—a visual meditation that finds deep resonance on the Friday of Sorrows, a day devoted to remembering Mary's suffering during Lent. The Feast of Our Lady of Compassion began with the Servite Order’s votive Mass in 1668, was formalized by Pope Innocent XII in 1692, and later moved to the Friday before Palm Sunday by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727. This solemn day draws the faithful into the pierced heart of the Virgin, echoing Simeon’s prophecy: “And a sword shall pierce your own soul also.” Mary’s sorrow in this painting is not remote; it is alive, pressing against the soul. Her eyes radiate acceptance, as if already sharing in the redemptive agony of her Son. This is not mere maternal grief; it is a sacred co-suffering, revealing the vastness of her love not only for Jesus, but for all humanity. The Church’s veneration of Our Lady of Sorrows affirms her deep suffering, her unwavering faith, and her exalted role. She stood when others fled. She believed when the world went dark. Through compassionate brushstrokes, this image invites quiet contemplation of Mary’s presence at the foot of every cross, especially the unseen ones we carry. A single red rose graces the scene—vibrant, sorrowful, and rich in meaning. It speaks of hope, sacrifice, and the promise of resurrection. It draws the heart to the “Light of the World,” her Son, Jesus Christ. This painting opens the soul to Mary's sorrow and strength—a love that invites us to believe, endure, and rise with her into the glory of Easter.

  • "Our Lady of Fatima - Miracle of the Sun – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
It encapsulates a profound moment that unfolded on October 13, 1917. In the vicinity of Fatima, a multitude had assembled, eagerly anticipating the foretold apparition of Our Lady, as heralded by three young shepherd visionaries: Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta Marto. What ensued, meticulously documented by journalists, legal professionals, and scientists, later earned the moniker "Miracle of the Sun." Eyewitness testimonies painted a vivid picture of extraordinary solar phenomena: the Sun seemingly pirouetting in the heavens, descending towards the earth, and casting a kaleidoscope of vibrant hues. This celestial spectacle, lasting a remarkable ten minutes, left an indelible impression on those present and reverberated the media environment of that period. Following the event, in November 1917, the local bishop launched a comprehensive investigation, meticulously scrutinizing witness statements and aligning purported messages from Mary with the tenets of Catholic theology. Notably, even skeptics among the gathering, including secular reporters and government officials, attested to the authenticity of the miraculous solar display. The formal endorsement by Bishop José da Silva on October 13, 1930, bestowed official recognition upon "Our Lady of Fatima" within the folds of Catholic tradition. This profound miracle, intertwined with its accompanying prophecies, continues to shape the devotional practices of countless Catholics, leaving an enduring legacy in the annals of Church history. Despite the passage of time, the composed testimony of witnesses such as Dr. Garrett serves as a poignant reminder of the event's solemnity. His steadfast recollection, amidst the surreal backdrop tinged with yellow hues, beckons subsequent generations to ponder the deeper significance of this extraordinary phenomenon.

After Mass in the Crucifix Chapel on the second morning of the inaugural Pilgrimage I organized, we were joined by our Roman tour guide for the day. As we listened and ventured around the glorious Basilica, my eyes and camera began to wander. I became stupefied by the grand chapel to the right of the main altar with the rising sun peering through the window just below the cupola. I discreetly wandered in and out in hopes it would shine upon the Holy Crib. The right transept is called the Sistine Chapel, containing the elaborate tomb of Pope Sixtus V (1521-90) and decorated with frescoes and reliefs of events from his reign. The chapel centers on a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib, and the burial place of Saint Jerome, the 4th-century Doctor of the Church. The architect Domenico Fontana designed the chapel, which also contains the tomb of Pope Pius V. The main altar in the chapel has four gilded bronze angels by Sebastiano Torregiani, holding up the ciborium, which is a model of the chapel itself. John's intertwining of spiritual sensitivity with artistic brilliance unfolds with intricate grace, and his bonds with his brother James and Mother Mary resonate with profound love and connection. John's spirit bore the mark of divine artistry. Following the teachings of Jesus led him on a transformative journey, departing the mundane for the extraordinary. The title "Beloved Disciple" adorned him, recognizing his intimate companionship with the Messiah. A poignant chapter unfolded during the Last Supper. Seated beside Jesus, the warmth of fellowship revealed insights into a love that would shape John's life's canvas. Jesus, in an act of immense trust, placed Mary under John's care, weaving familial bonds into the fabric of discipleship. The crucifixion and resurrection marked a pivotal turn. Embracing his role as an evangelist, John fervently spread the Gospel, translating the ineffable into words. The Gospel of John emerged as a masterpiece, a stroke of divinity on the canvas of human understanding. John's artistic spirit found expression in three epistles urging believers to embody Christ's teachings. Exiled to Patmos, a vision unfolded—a cosmic ballet of good and evil, unveiled in the Book of Revelation. Symbolic imagery and prophetic revelations became strokes in the hands of an expert craftsman. In the twilight of life, John's legacy endured. His writings and artistic expressions became a beacon, inspiring generations to seek the profound depths of divine love. • Mother Mary Under the Cross – The Convent of Le Celle, Cortona<br />
<br />
In the hush of the Tuscan hills, where stone sanctuaries breathe with centuries of devotion, stands a vision of divine sorrow and celestial hope. Here, at Le Celle—the sacred hermitage carved into Mount Sant’Egidio by the hands of Saint Francis himself—the Blessed Virgin Mary stands beneath the Cross, cloaked in quiet majesty. Time slows along the worn path where cypress trees rise like green flames, leading hearts not to spectacle, but to sacred encounter. Captured in a moment steeped in grace, this photograph transcends mere image. It becomes encounter. The Virgin does not demand attention—she draws it, gently, like a mother’s touch on a fevered brow. Her head is bowed, not in defeat, but in everlasting compassion. The Cross beside her is adorned with golden blooming roses, their petals fragile yet defiant—a crown of beauty pressed into suffering. These roses do not resist the thorns; they glorify them. The sky above seems to open in divine response, clouds parting like veils before revelation. The rosary in her hand is not just a symbol but an invitation. Pray. Hope. Endure. Love. Each bead echoes a tear, a promise, a memory—like the ones held by sons and daughters who, on days like Mother’s Day, long for one more embrace, one more whispered word. This tribute is born not only of art, but of memory—honoring the Creator's own mother and every earthly mother who has wept, believed, and loved through the sorrows of life. Mary beneath the Cross does not flee from pain; she sanctifies it. She remains. As she did then, she does now—watching, praying, sheltering all who come weary and wounded. “Behold your mother.” Her gaze says it still. Her roses bloom still. Her love never departs.

For nearly sixteen centuries, Santa Maria Maggiore has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render Santa Maria Maggiore a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of a man inspired by God. The transcendent and inspiring Regina Pacis and the Christ child is a 20th-century statue of the ‘Queen of Peace’ commissioned by Pope Benedict XV in commemoration of the end of the First World War. “Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.”

On my 4th attempt, my judicious endeavor was rewarded. A young woman in a splendid white dress walked directly into the heavenly light. Her luminescence and celestial reverence gave the appearance of a wondrous and radiant angel in admiration of the sacred relic. • “The prophet Isaiah at the base of the Column of the Immaculate Conception – Rome”…<br />
<br />
The column is situated next to the Piazza di Spagna in the adjacent Piazza Mignanelli in front of the Spanish Embassy in Rome near the Palace of the Propagation of the Faith. It was realized by the architect Luigi Poletti and inaugurated in 1857 on the 8th December thanks to the work of 220 firemen. The work is dedicated to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception that was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX, in 1854, with the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus. This dogma states that Mary is the only human being who was born without original sin. The statues are the work of Giuseppi Obici. On the base of the column are 4 bronze statues of Moses, David, the prophet Ezekiel and Isaiah. Below each statue is a verse from the Sacred Scriptures that refers to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Below this statue of Isaiah, we find the verse: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.” (Is 7:14) Each year, on the 8th of December the Church celebrates the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. In the afternoon the Holy Father visits the Piazza di Spagna to place roses as an act of homage to Our Lady, at the statue of the Virgin. These roses indicate the love and devotion of the Pope, the Church and the people of the city of Rome for the Virgin Mary. With these roses, the desire is to depose each of anxiety and place hope at the foot of the celestial Mother of the Redeemer. The late afternoon sun was shining directly on the Prophet Isaiah’s pen in anticipation of his divinatory words.

  • "Emmanuel, “God is with us” – Painting by Dino Carbetta"...<br />
<br />
Matthew 1:18-25, Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us. “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus. Matthew 2:19-23: 19, When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, “He shall be called a Nazorean.”<br />
The Reverend Dr. Patrick Devine, International Chairperson, Shalom-SCCRR … asked me to paint a picture for his world mission. He described an image, and hopefully, I was able to match his thought process. God Bless you, Father Devine.

Luke 2: 7-20, “and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’ When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.” “Three things are too wonderful for me, yes, four I cannot understand.” Proverbs 30:18 Going back during the winter, cold and snow overcame Assisi. Luke 1:46-48 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed." Upon arrival early that day in Assisi, I began taking photos the second I parked at Hotel Giotto just inside the walls in the foothills of Assisi. Perhaps Saint Francis arranged the dramatically perfect skies and coordinated every encounter. Beginning at the Basilica of Saint Francis, every second of the climb to the top of the mountain and the fortress of Rocca Maggiore was highlighted time after time by a vision of something more mystical and spiritual than the last. Upon my final steps to the top at almost sunset, the clouds parted and the low sun brightened as a slight mist of rain came down. The climb to the top was fraught with a multitude of very steep and exhaustive staircases, but the one consolation was the dramatic anticipation of the divine scenery emerging in the distance. Rising slowly up the Assisi hillside after a slow ascent to the highest peak, around the final corner awaited the Romanesque Duomo of Saint Rufino completed in the 12th century. In this church, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, and many of their original disciples were baptized among the many spiritual and historical missions of the Duomo.

  • Our Lady of Fatima Embraces the Old Glory - Painting by Dino Carbetta<br />
<br />
This painting connects two significant events on July 13th: the Third Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 and the shocking event when former President Donald Trump was shot. On July 13, 1917, troubled by her pastor's warnings, Lúcia hesitated to attend the apparition. Her anxieties dissipated, and she found herself with Jacinta and Francisco at Cova da Iria, awaiting the Lady’s arrival. This apparition revealed a three-part secret. The first was a vision of hell with demons and suffering souls. The second emphasized devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary to save souls and achieve peace. The prophecy warned of another terrible war during Pius XI's pontificate if people continued to offend God. A strange light on January 28, 1938, would signify the impending divine punishment. The Lady foretold the need to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart to prevent its errors from spreading and causing more wars. She promised her Immaculate Heart would triumph, bringing a period of peace. The Third Secret revealed a vision of a Bishop in white, likely the Pope, climbing a mountain, passing through a devastated city, and being martyred by soldiers. This vision symbolized the trials and martyrdom of the Church’s faithful. The Day Donald Trump Was Shot July 13, 2024, was an event that sent shockwaves through the nation and beyond. While not directly linked to the religious significance of Fatima, this modern event prompted reflection amidst the crisis. In this painting, Our Lady of Fatima holds the American flag, "Old Glory," symbolizing her embrace and intercession for a nation in turmoil. The artwork bridges past and present, highlighting the timeless relevance of faith and divine intervention during great distress. It inspires contemplation on the divine presence amidst worldly struggles, urging a return to spiritual devotion and trust in the Immaculate Heart of Mary to guide through dark times.

<br />
The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of St. Mary of Health), commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite small interiorly. I am not sure if it was ever an active parish but more of a shrine with little room for seating. The steps wrapping around the front and sides make a perfect destination for relaxation during warm Venetian days. Interior windows open to the sky which allows for a great deal of sunlight, and as I meandered around I noticed a beautiful crucifix near the confessional. The strong rays of sunshine illuminated the face of Christ just enough to encourage one to examine their conscience one last time before entering into Sacrament of Confession.

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. We aimed for Piazza del Popolo, encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture which didn’t take long. We headed toward the twin churches opposite Santa Maria del Popolo. On the right is Santa Maria in Montesanto and the left is Santa Maria dei Miracoli. According to tradition, the painting of Madonna dei Miracoli originates from a miracle of 1325. A woman praying to an image of The Virgin Mary painted on the walls along the Tiber River to save her drowning son was miraculously answered. A small Chapel was built in honor of The Virgin Mary and eventually became this extraordinary church. Pilgrims continue to pray for Our Lady’s intercession in the blessing of future miracles.

Siena is home to the Eucharistic Miracle which is one of the longest on-going miracles in the world. On August 14, 1730, thieves broke into the Church of St. Francis and stole a ciborium containing consecrated hosts. However, since 1730, the hosts have remained fresh and sweet-smelling. The wall mechanically spun around and revealed the Eucharistic Miracle to us. After prayer, I moved to the back and abidingly captured this mystical, spiritual, and reverent manifestation. The Madonna of Fatima stood majestically guarding the precious Hosts. Luke 1:46-48 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. • “Saint Mary Magdalene - Chigi Chapel of Siena Cathedral”…<br />
<br />
The Duomo in Siena lies in a piazza above the Piazza del Campo, a great Gothic building filled with treasures by Pisano, Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo as well as frescoes by Pinturicchio. Originally completed in 1263, the 14th century inspired an ambitious attempt to transform the cathedral into the largest temple in all of Christendom, which would dwarf even St. Peter's in Rome. The already-large Duomo would form just the transept of this huge cathedral. In 1348, the Black Death swept through the city and killed 4/5 of Siena's population. The giant cathedral was never completed, and the half-finished walls of the New Cathedral survive as a monument to Siena's ambition and one-time wealth. The magnificent complex of the Cathedral of Siena houses a series of some of the most important monuments of the European artistic panorama. One will travel along a memorable itinerary to the discovery of self and the truth of faith through culture and art, the result of more than a millennium of Western history. If I was asked to choose only one place that represented the great history of art, architecture, culture, and faith in all of Italy…one would be hard-pressed to find a more complete portfolio than the Cathedral of Siena. I found myself awe-inspired just walking up and facing the elegant façade, striped walls and pillars, and massive size. Upon entering the nave, one is overwhelmed with a plethora of artistic expression and great beauty placed in every available space. From its dome, stained glass, frescos, sculptures, and to what is said to be the most magnificent marble floor in history…it is worth every minute. Saints Jerome and Mary Magdalene are sculptures by the great Italian artist Gianlorenzo Bernini. Work began on the sculptures in 1661 and now reside in the Chigi Chapel of the Siena Cathedral.

  • “Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, The Archangels – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
Angels, often referred to as messengers from God, play a significant role in Scripture, with only three being named: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Michael, whose name means "Who is like God?," is a prominent figure in the Bible. He appears in Daniel's vision as "the great prince," defending Israel against its adversaries. In Revelation, Michael leads God's heavenly armies to ultimate victory over the forces of evil. The devotion to Michael is one of the oldest angelic devotions, originating in the fourth century. The Western Church began honoring Michael and all the angels with a feast in the fifth century, showcasing the enduring appeal of this angelic figure. Gabriel also makes appearances in Daniel's visions, where he announces Michael's role in God's divine plan. However, Gabriel is perhaps best known for his encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary. It was through Gabriel's message that Mary willingly agreed to bear the Messiah, making him a central figure in the story of the Nativity. Raphael’s role in the Bible appears exclusively in the Old Testament story of Tobit. Raphael guides Tobit's son, Tobiah, through a series of incredible adventures that ultimately result in a threefold happy conclusion: Tobiah's marriage to Sarah, the miraculous healing of Tobit's blindness, and the restoration of the family's fortune. Raphael's role as a guide and healer showcases the diverse attributes of angels. The memorials of Gabriel and Raphael were added to the Roman calendar in 1921, a recognition of their importance in Christian tradition. These angels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, hold a special place in the hearts of believers and serve as messengers and protectors, exemplifying the profound spiritual connection between heaven and Earth. Their stories continue to inspire and uplift those who seek divine guidance and protection in their lives.

  • “Crucifix next to the Confessional - Santa Maria della Salute Venice - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />
<br />
In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one-third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

  • “The Moors ring the bell at the top of the Clock Tower in Piazza San Marco Venice”…<br />
<br />
On Ascension Week and the Epiphany, carved figures of the four Magi join the Moors hourly, emerging from the clock face and bowing to the Virgin Mary above them. An angel raises a trumpet in recognition of them, and the Magi bow in return. The Clock Tower in Venice is an early Renaissance building on the north side of the Piazza San Marco, at the entrance to the Merceria. It comprises a tower, which contains the clock, and lower buildings on each side. It adjoins the eastern end of the Procuratie Vecchie. Both the tower and the clock date from the last decade of the 15th century, though the mechanism of the clock has subsequently been much altered. It was placed where the clock would be visible from the waters of the lagoon and give notice to every one of the wealth and glory of Venice. The clock tower is topped by two bronze figures who strike the bell hourly. Although they were originally designated as giants, their dark patina lent them the nickname “Moors.” A relief of the winged lion of St. Mark, patron saint, and symbol of Venice, stands on an open book below the Moors. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands one level down, above the massive clock face. The clock was intentionally designed to sit high enough in the square to be protected from Venice’s waters and to be visible from the canal. Meandering outside on the rooftop above St Mark's Basilica, I became mesmerized by Piazza San Marco below and the multitude of historic artwork residing on high. As the evening sun descended with a fire in the sky, the Moors were called once again to ring the bell reminding all of the romantic Venetian history, and a siren call of utopian futures here in La Serenissima, the ‘Most Serene,’ Veneto.

  • "Privileged Altar - Church of Our Lady of the Assumption Positano"... <br />
<br />
The history of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is closely linked to the Benedictine monastery of St. Mary, which, according to tradition, was built when a Byzantine icon of the Virgin was brought to Positano and venerated thereafter. The Icon belonged to a cargo ship from the East, and offshore of Positano the ship was stopped by a dead calm sea. After unsuccessful attempts to continue sailing, the sailors heard a voice saying “Posa Posa”, meaning, “Put me down, put me down!” (Origin of the name “Positano”). The captain thought this miracle meant that the Virgin wanted to stop there and decided to head for shore. At that point…the ship began to sail again. The sailors disembarked the icon and gave it to the inhabitants of Positano, who chose the Virgin as their patron and built a church in her honor. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a prominent aspect of Positano’s cultural, religious, and architectural landscape. Strategically located in the center of town with the backdrop of the Azzurro Mediterranean Sea, the church’s colorful majolica tiled cupola is one of the town’s iconic symbols. I found this Crucifix inside a small chapel of the ancient church which was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. Santa Maria keeps a blessed and watchful eye over Positano and welcomes all to this beautiful seaside village.

  • “Madonna of the Angels - The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli Assisi - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />
<br />
Nestled just three-quarters of a mile from Assisi lies the serene town of Portiuncula, a place imbued with profound significance. Its heart is the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, where a humble little church holds the essence of Saint Francis of Assisi's calling. In the year 1208, it was within these hallowed walls that Saint Francis discovered his divine purpose. He spent most of his earthly existence here, and in 1211, the Benedictines entrusted him with the stewardship of the small chapel of St. Mary of the Angels, known as the Portiuncula, meaning 'a little portion' of land, where the first Franciscan convent was established. It was under the sheltering wings of the Portiuncula that Saint Francis received the sacred vows of Saint Clare. On October 3, 1226, Saint Francis bequeathed the chapel to his brothers, entrusting it to their faithful care. At the age of 42, Saint Francis embarked on a solitary retreat to the remote Mount Alvernia. Here, he prepared himself through 40 days of fasting and prayer for the feast of Saint Michael, the mightiest of God's angels. On the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Saint Francis was graced with the Sacred Wounds, mirroring those of Our Lord, upon his hands, feet, and side. These divine wounds remained upon his body, bleeding continuously for two more years until his passing in 1226. In 1930, a golden-plated statue of the Madonna Degli Angeli, sculpted by Colasanti and crafted by Marinelli Artistic Foundry, was placed atop the Basilica's façade, radiating its sacred presence. During our 2019 Pilgrimage, we were blessed to explore this deeply reverent Basilica, where the golden exterior of Mother Mary, when kissed by the sun's rays, seems almost translucent. In my artistic endeavor, I sought to capture this mystical radiance, echoing the harmonious and glorious light that bathes the Madonna degli Angeli.
