  • “The Arch Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran Mosaic Apse - Rome”…<br />

The present mosaic, executed in 1878, is a copy of the destroyed original completed in 1291 by two Franciscan friars, Jacopo da Camerino and Jacopo Torriti, commissioned by Pope Nicholas IV who was also a Franciscan. The upper part depicts the bust of Christ in a dark blue empyrean with the red clouds of dawn, accompanied by four angels on each side and with a six-winged seraph above. Here, Christ is being depicted under his aspect of the Rising Sun (Malachi 4:2, Luke 1:78). It is thought that the seraph replaced a Hand of God which, with Christ and the Dove below him, would have given a Trinitarian iconography. A jeweled cross which is a depiction of the True Cross formerly venerated in Jerusalem and bears a central medallion showing The Baptism of Christ. The Dove of the Holy Spirit emits seven streams from its beak which are symbolic of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These streams form a pool where the cross stands and from this flow the four rivers of the Garden of Eden, which also symbolize the four Gospels. Two deer (Ps 42:1) and six sheep drink from these, which run into the River Jordan, a symbol of Baptism. Heavenly Jerusalem, guarded by St Michael the Archangel and ruled over by SS Peter and Paul. In the city, the phoenix, a symbol of immortality, is perched on the Tree of Life. To the left of the central motif, and venerating it, stand the Blessed Virgin, St Francis of Assisi, and the Apostles Peter and Paul. To the right are SS John the Baptist, Anthony of Padua, John the Evangelist, and Andrew the Apostle. The pope kneeling close to the Blessed Virgin is the Franciscan Nicholas IV, who was praised for his work at the Lateran by Dante in Paradiso. The Virgin places her hand on his head, as a sign of her protection. St. John Lateran is the parish church of all Catholics because it is the pope’s cathedral. This church is the spiritual home of the people who are the Church.

  • “Peaceful evening view of Praiano from the cliffs of Positano – Light Blue”…<br />

Visiting Positano, one cannot help but notice the diminutive town snuggled in the side of a cliff jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea seven miles south of Positano. The tiny village seemed to glow every evening with the last bit of sunlight raining down as Praiano extended its petals skyward. High above the cliffs, buildings are scattered about with just enough via and Strada to support the population of just over 2000. And, like most places in Italy, there is a church for about every 300 parishioners of its population. The most famous is the Church of San Luca Evangelista, famous for its splendid majolica floor, the Church of Santa Maria a Castro, and the Convent of San Domenico located in the high Campo valley with breathtaking views. The vista of Praiano facing northward toward Positano brightly displays a prominent gold-colored church with the traditional majolica tile dome named Parrocchia Di San Gennaro, one of the most beautiful churches on the Amalfi Coast. In addition to the maze of little lanes, narrow flights of steps, and pastel-colored cottages, one of the most characteristic features of Praiano is the majolica tiled votive shrines, which can be seen throughout the town. The shrines were constructed by the local families to both claim their ownership of a particular property and to obtain its divine protection. The town displays the most romantic sunsets on the Amalfi Coast with two beautiful beaches, Marina di Praia and Cala della Gavitella. The latter beach catches the sun from dawn until dusk and can be reached from the center of the town via a pathway interspersed with short flights of steps. From my vantage point for this image and many others, it mystically seemed as though the sun never set on the Bellissimo Villaggio molto piccolo of Praiano.

  • “Dawn awakens the Bougainvillea on the Bay of Positano”… <br />

After a solemn sunrise morning where I essentially had Positano all to myself, I began my strenuous journey downward and later trekked back up the mountainside. I stumbled upon this alluring view of Positano’s famous Bougainvillea gently waking in the early saturated sunshine. How can one not ponder the elegance of this combination of complementary captivating colors of burgundy and azure blue? There was only one occasion that I was able to pre-plan capturing photos at sunrise and that was during this last day of three in Positano. It takes a bit of pervasive planning, logistics, and familiarity to figure out the prime locations, the proper angles, and the position of the rising sun. This third morning was ideal and fortuitous as it eventually began raining at about 10:00 am, giving me perfect early, and eager clouds for sunrise, and finally the day ended with a very cold, penetrating Mediterranean wind from the Italiano Azzurro Sea just in time for sunset. This image is one of the rare images of a slumbering Positano in the dewing morning around 6:50 am at the end of May…. the beginning of peak tourist season. By 8:00 am, this tiny seaside village is bustling with ambitious tourists, shop owners, and restaurateurs trying to satisfy every need. Positano was by far the plushest of all the locations I visited in Italy, and I was blessed to witness all living things in spectacular full bloom. “Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them.” LUKE 12:27.

In history's tapestry, Clare of Assisi shines, woven with devotion and courage. An Italian luminary, she danced with Francis of Assisi, etching sanctity. A beacon of feminine spirituality, she unfurled the Order of Poor Clares, a sanctuary in the Franciscan tradition. At eighteen, beneath Lenten skies, Clare's heart was ignited by Francis' words. Swift as moonlight, she met him at the altar. In the night, she shed her locks and worldly trappings, adorned with Francis' tunic – her emblem of consecration. With courage, Clare embraced Assisi's San Damiano sanctuary. Her days, were an eloquent symphony of service, tending the ailing and washing beguiling nuns' feet. Her visage, radiant as dawn, bore witness to her communion with the divine. Amidst turmoil, a prayerful fortress arose. The Blessed Sacrament adorned walls, a plea against marauding Saracens. "O God, do these defenseless hearts find solace?" Her words echoed with faith, sisters found solace in her whispered exhortations: "Fear not. Trust Jesus." Saracens fled before her resolute faith. Clare transcended grace in her passing. Beside her, a brother heard her final refrain: "In my tapestry, pain found no dwelling, His light illuminated my steps." This legacy ignited a spark within me, brush to canvas, spirit to flight, honoring Clare's devotion.

There was only one occasion that I was really able to pre-plan taking photos at sunrise and that was during the last day of three in Positano.  It takes much planning, logistics, and familiarity to figure the best locations and the proper angles and positions of the sun.  My third morning was ideal and fortuitous as it began raining about 10:00 am which gave me perfect clouds for sunrise, finally ending with a very cold wind just in time for sunset. The primary focal point of Positano is the majestic view of the church of Santa Maria Assunta overlooking the picturesque seaside village. The radiant dome is composed of majolica tiles which are very prominent on the Amalfi Coast. This prominent and resplendent church contains a thirteenth-century Byzantine icon of the legendary Black Madonna. Photogenic is an understatement for Positano, as she poses to perfection graciously revealing le sue bellissime coste!

The unity of faith finds its expression in shared rituals, and the celebration of the Most Holy Name of Mary beautifully complements the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, observed every September 12. In the intricate mosaic of Catholic devotion, these celebrations are like twin stars, one radiating the celestial grace of Mary, the other illuminating the majestic persona of Jesus. Each festivity encapsulates a distinct essence, yet they resonate harmoniously, representing the two pillars of divinity. The Holy Name of Mary, a testament to her unwavering virtue and maternal compassion, stands as a symbol of solace and intercession.   • “Spring Mystical Reflections of Villa Borghese – Rome”…<br />
<br />
Villa Borghese in Roma is a famous Garden and Museum begun in the early 17th century, highlighted by a "Temple of Aesculapius” at the garden lake. The Temple is located in the gardens of Borghese in Roma and was styled in the ionic characteristic by Antonio Asprucci. The temple was perhaps built-in memory of the destroyed ancient temple to the god of Medicine on Tiber Island. The temple houses a statue of Aesculapius believed to be originally from the Mausoleum of Augustus. Neglected over the centuries, it was restored by Vincenzo Pacetti and sold to Marcantonio Borghese IV in 1785. Stretching from above Piazza del Popolo to the top of Via Veneto, Villa Borghese crowns Rome in a glorious canopy of Green. Despite the onward march of the years and extensive developmental changes to Rome, Villa Borghese has remained a perennial and pleasant space, diluting the impact of an otherwise ever-expanding urban Metropolis. The Park was originally a private vineyard, redesigned and enlarged in 1605 to grandiose proportions for Pope Paul V's nephew, Cardinal Scipione Borghese. However, it was named after the Borghese family on the condition that it boasted the most luxurious and magnificent dwelling in Rome. Visiting the very spaciously plush park and lovely atmosphere of tall secluding lavish trees, blissful gardens, and colorful reflective lakes, one is taken away from the city life and transported to a serene country paradise. Peace and relaxation encompass the body and soul and give time and rumination of the historical and religious world capital which is the ever Eternal City of Roma.

  • “The New Church birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi”…<br />
<br />
This photograph was created while approaching Chiesa Nuova (New Church) at the same time an elderly Italian man was entering for worship and prayer. As I entered the beautiful small church, a Franciscan Monk working inside saw me and without reluctance, rose from his desk and graced me with a half-hour tour speaking entirely in Italian. He never hesitated and he never assumed that I was not fluent in Italian; yet, he continued to entrust me with every detail of what looked like a mini Basilica. As we ventured around, he explained every nuance, even the crypt where Saint Francis’ parents reside. Upon completion of the tour, he shook my hand, gave me a gentle embrace, and bestowed a blessing in Italian. While not understanding the language, I left with gratitude and amazement …yet, somehow, I understood his every word.

  • "Sun hiding behind the Macuteo Obelisk - Roman Pantheon"...<br />

Eventually, one discovers that God finds a way where there is none. A very crowded Pantheon at 3:00 PM in the bright afternoon made creative photography impossible. However, getting on my knees and placing the sun behind the cross of the Obelisk created a phenomenal appeal. All are original, including the landing dove/pigeon and sun flare. The Obelisk was originally built by one of the most famous Egyptian Pharaohs about 1300 years before Christ by Pharaoh Ramses II for the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis and brought to Rome in ancient times. It was rediscovered in 1374 underneath the apse of the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. In the mid-15th century, the obelisk had been erected in the small Piazza di San Macuto some 200 meters east of the Pantheon, where it remained until its 1711 move to the Piazza della Rotonda. It is still called the Obelisco Macutèo after its previous location. Fontana del Pantheon was constructed by Giacomo Della Porta under Pope Gregory XIII in 1575, and the obelisk was added under Pope Clement XI. The city of Rome harbors the most obelisks in the world. There are eight ancient Egyptian and five ancient Roman obelisks. The Romans used special heavy cargo carriers called obelisk ships to transport the monuments down the Nile to Alexandria and from there across the Mediterranean Sea to Rome. On-site, large Roman cranes were employed to erect the monoliths. The obelisk is crowned by a bronze cross, the symbol of Jesus Christ. One idea that can be drawn from this is that Christianity—the cross of Jesus Christ—conquers paganism.  Another idea is that the obelisk represents the human desire for God which is only fulfilled in the Cross of Christ.

When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God." The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a conspicuous position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one-third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite reverently quaint interiorly.

  • “View from the Grand Canal of the church of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice”…<br />

The first church on the island was built about 790, and in 982 the island was given to the Benedictine order by the Doge Tribuno Memmo. The Benedictines founded a monastery there, but in 1223 all the buildings on the island were destroyed by an earthquake. Andrea Palladio, an Italian Renaissance architect active in the Venetian Republic was commissioned for the rebuild. Palladio, influenced by Roman and Greek architecture, is widely considered to be one of the most influential individuals in the history of architecture, began the rebuild in 1560 and made dramatic improvements. The campanile was rebuilt in neo-classic style and completed in 1791. It was ascended by ramps and now an elevator to the top for panoramic views of Venice. The facade is brilliantly white and represents Palladio's solution to the difficulty of adapting a classical temple facade to the form of the Catholic Basilica. Two very large paintings by Tintoretto relate to the institution of the Eucharist and are located on either side of the presbytery, where they can be seen from the altar rail. “The Last Supper” and “The Jews in the Desert” (collecting and eating the manna, a gift of God to the Israelites in the Desert after they escaped Egypt, which foretells the gift of the Eucharist). Claude Monet painted a series of paintings of the island Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in 1908 during the artist's only visit to the city. One of the best known is “San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk”, which exists in two versions. Monet completed his paintings of Venice at home in France and in 1912 showed them in Paris. Buyers included the Welsh collector Gwendoline Davies, who bought three paintings. This vision of the Church of San Giorgio is iconic and famous worldwide.   • "Our Lady of Fatima - Miracle of the Sun – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

The painting entitled "Our Lady of Fatima - Miracle of the Sun"  depicts an event that occurred on October 13, 1917. A large crowd had gathered near Fatima to witness the next apparition of Our Lady, as foretold by three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta Marto. According to reports from journalists, lawyers, and scientists who were in attendance, the event that followed became known as the "Miracle of the Sun." Witnesses claimed to have seen extraordinary solar activity, such as the Sun appearing to "dance" or zig-zag in the sky, careen towards the Earth, or emitting multicolored light and radiant colors. The event lasted for ten minutes and was widely reported in newspapers. In November 1917, the local bishop conducted a canonical investigation of the event, reviewing witness accounts and assessing private revelations from Mary that were compatible with Catholic theology. The priests conducting the investigation were convinced by the concurring testimony of extraordinary solar phenomena from secular reporters, government officials, and other skeptics in attendance. Bishop José da Silva declared the miracle "worthy of belief" on October 13, 1930, permitting "Our Lady of Fatima" within the Catholic Church. Over the years, the miracle and related prophecies have impacted the devotional practices of many Catholics, and it continues to be a significant event in the history of the church. Despite the enduring interest in the miracle, Dr. Garrett, who was present at the event, affirmed that he was in his right mind and not suffering from a hallucination. He described everything as taking on the color of old yellow damask, with people looking unattractive and suffering from jaundice. He observed all the phenomena calmly and serenely, without any emotional disturbance, leaving it to others to interpret and explain them.

  • “Excitement abounds as the warm summer evening falls on Positano” …<br />

After an exhilarating drive along the high cliffs on the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento down to Positano, I found myself in sensory overload with its beauty and photogenic appeal. Circling the entire village and its cliffside three times on Positano’s only street, I finally found the parking garage about 2/3rds up the facing village in this image. The climb down the winding road and steep staircases made for quite a workout in the hot late May sun. Reaching the beach and marina, I forgot about my exhaustion and could not capture enough of Positano’s plush beauty; however, the substantial number of tourists and the bright sun did not allow for ideal conditions. Walking the length of the beach, I found a very, very steep staircase leading straight up to a large veranda at the Albergo California. Taking an exhaustive seat on a plush lounge chair with a perfect view to watch the sunset behind the Amalfi Cliffs, I was taken back by a pleasant Italian waiter from the hotel offering a towel, iced water, and drinks for the evening. I expressed that I was not staying at the hotel, but he did not seem to mind and proceeded to educate me on the culture of this historic resort village. The sunset was coy and did not appear to cooperate, but during opportune moments it mystified the cloud arrangement and contributed just enough light and color to satisfy a weary photographer. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a prominent aspect of Positano’s cultural, religious, and architectural landscape. Strategically located in the center of town tucked between the descending mountains dripping with multicolored dwellings, and the transcendent blue sea, the church’s brilliant majolica tiled cupola is one of the town’s iconic symbols. The ancient church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. Santa Maria keeps a blessed and watchful eye over Positano and welcomes all to this iconic beautiful seaside village.

  • “Saint Jude the Apostle – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

St. Jude is the Patron Saint of Hope and impossible causes and one of Jesus’ original twelve Apostles. He preached the Gospel with great passion, often in the most difficult circumstances. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, he made profound differences in people's lives as he offered them the Word of God. The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the Apostles. They are described in the Gospel of Matthew as the "brethren" of Jesus, probably cousins. St. Jude is often confused with Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. St. Jude is traditionally depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand. This recalls one of his miracles during his work spreading the Word of God. King Abgar of Edessa asked Jesus to cure him of leprosy and sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Impressed with Abgar’s great faith, Jesus pressed His face on a cloth, leaving the image of His face on it. He gave the cloth to St. Jude, who took the image to Abgar and cured him. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude traveled throughout Mesopotamia, Libya, and Persia with St. Simon preaching and building up the foundations of the early Church. St. Jude died a martyr death for his unwavering faith. His body was later brought to Rome and placed in a crypt under St. Peter's Basilica. Over the ages, many people in desperate need have turned to Saint Jude in prayer. Saint Bridget of Sweden said she was directed in a vision to pray with deep faith and confidence to Saint Jude. She stated that Christ told her, “Following his surname, Thaddeus, the amiable or loving, Saint Jude will show himself most willing to help.” Today, Saint Jude continues to be one of the most popular and beloved Saints, a trusted heavenly intercessor for all those seeking God’s assistance during times of family crisis, sickness, and trouble, especially when all hope seems lost.

  • “Crucifixion beyond the entrance to the Abbey of Santa Giustina – Padua”…<br />

Our Pilgrimage finally arrived in Padua and after lunch, we discovered the Abbey of Santa Giustina attached to the Basilica built in the 6th century. It contains the relics of multiple saints (including those of St. Luke the Evangelist). Shaped in the form of a Latin cross, the prodigious Basilica of St. Giustina is one of the most colossal in all of Christianity. The grandeur of the building is enhanced by the Prato della Valle which it overlooks. There are 3 main chapels: the presbytery and 2 chapels for Saints Luke and Matthew that form the transepts and each aisle has six small chapels. The Abbey and the Basilica of St. Anthony were two of my foremost surprises and a must-see on a Pilgrimage to Italy. Unfortunately, pictures were allowed only in St. Giustina, but not in the latter. Initially, I was a bit overwhelmed at the imposing wide open space of the Basilica. The high altar seemed an eternity away. It is difficult to give one a perspective of just how spacious and immense many of these basilicas can be, not only in pictures but in words. The colorful geometric marble floor leads one to the main altar, but only adds to the great depth, size, and dimension of the Basilica. A curiously placed Crucifix standing about 6’ tall is located just inside the colossal nave and appears diminutive below the 26 pillars supporting the 8 cupolas. As most basilicas are traditionally dark depending on the sunlight, the Crucifix was almost a complete faint silhouette only lit by the dome windows above the altar. Standing as close as possible with a telephoto perspective, I was able to reverse the impression of size and portray the grandiosity Christ deserves, as well as the original artist. The distant window light bled over the body and illuminated the darkness. The glow of the original beauty has become radiant. Framed by the brilliant distant archways, the Crucifixion becomes transformed.

  • “The Celestial Boat of Jesus rests in Marina Grande Sorrento”…<br />

This sunset image of the lone antique fishing boat is the most iconic of the seaside views from Sorrento. The lone boat represents many perceptions and creative thoughts and portrays imagery of stillness and beauty among the restless seas. It reminds me of Saint Matthew’s account of Jesus’ calming of the winds and the seas: "As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came upon the sea so that the boat was being swamped by waves, but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!” He said to them, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?" Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. The men were amazed and said, "What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?" (Matt. 8:23- 27)

  • “Organic Venice - Perpetual Evolution of Splendor, Harmony, and Color” …<br />

I am not sure if I am the first to describe Venice as “organic;” however, there has never been a more perfect description to define Venice’s ever-changing persona. Venice is perhaps the most uniquely iconic seaside city in the world, and its impression changes by the minute with the dynamic light and active tide coming in and out. Flying into Venice via the USA, I was met with torrential rains in the early morning, which finally gave way to afternoon sunshine. The creaky, wet, gloomy, old, decaying Venice sinking and soaking in the morning rain… opened like flower petals in the springtime at the first glimpse of sunlight. The organic lagoon began to blossom as if the decay became antique, the gloom became a passion, the creaky became sweet sounds, and the desperate island illuminated with life, color, and hope. This image was captured along a small canal in front of The Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars), known locally as Frari, one of the great churches of Venice. Ironically, before my Italian journey, I read Rick Steve’s travel book on Italy and watched all of his shows made in Italy. It seemed every American tourist had his book in their hands following closely every piece of advice he offered. As I pondered my impending images, I looked up and there was Rick about 20 feet in front of me. Sometimes one has moments of brilliance, and mine was to yell…"Hey, Rick” and snap a photo when he looked. He smiled as I walked up and shook his hand, and dumbfoundedly I shared how much he contributed to my tour. He was very gracious as we spoke for about five minutes and then he continued producing his next PBS show on the Venice Lagoon including his favorite church, The Frari. As I walked away shocked by my accidental meeting, the clouds parted and the light transformed a perfect ambiance along this tiny, yet majestic canal.

  • “Father Peek Celebrates the Lamb's Supper - Amalfi Cathedral”…<br />

A church has resided on this site in Amalfi since 596 AD and the one built in the 9th century still stands today. The present cathedral was built adjacent to the old one in the early 13th century to provide a suitable resting place for St. Andrew the Apostle. The two were originally joined together to form a single, six-nave Romanesque cathedral. Newer walls have been taken down to expose parts of the ancient original church, and one can ponder history by this glimpse back in time. Andrew, Saint Peter’s brother and one of Christ’s closest disciples was also the disciple of John the Baptist. Saint Andrew was called with Peter: “As [Jesus] was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is now called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him” (Matthew 4:18-20). Stairs near the east end of the Duomo descend into the Crypt of St. Andrew, where his relics are kept in the central altar. The crypt is decorated with magnificent Baroque murals from 1660. As I knelt and prayed at the glorious crypt befitting this great disciple who was martyred on an X shaped crucifix, my mind wandered off the true nature of this chosen man who became a Saint. I stirred around to the back of the altar and found myself facing his eternal light and relics. I knelt again in prayer feeling the great essence and presence of this selfless apostle. As in many other locations and churches in Italy, where Saints seem to be from every town, I was overcome with deep emotion and an abundance of heartfelt spiritual joy! Our Pilgrimage of 2019 found us celebrating Mass in the chapel just to the left of the High Altar below the image of the “Last Supper.” A reverent and poignant remembrance of cherished time on the Amalfi Coast.

  • "Father Peek elevates the Host for Adoration - The Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia"... <br />

This image is one of my favorites and the most poignant of our 2019 Pilgrimage. On our fourth gentile morning in Roma before leaving for Sorrento, we walked from our hotel to the Bellissimo Santo Spirito for Mass. Located just steps from St. Peter’s Basilica, the church is the center of the Divine Mercy established by St. John Paul II. Each day at 3 p.m. the congregants assemble to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in this reverent sanctuary containing St. Faustina Kowalska and St. John Paul II relics. The church is distinguished for its beautiful and pious artistic and aesthetic adornment, yet, also has a long history of bringing mercy to the human spirit and body. In the eighth century, a church called Santa Maria in Sassia was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name of the church comes from “the Saxon school,” where pilgrims from Northern Europe and Saxon nations received their first spiritual and material assistance. In 1198, at the request of Pope Innocent III, the first “Holy Spirit Hospital” in Europe was built adjacent to the church. The chapel on the right side is dedicated to The Divine Mercy and to Saint Faustina where the “The Apostle of The Divine Mercy” statue resides with her reliquary donated by the Holy Father John Paul II. The reflection of Father Peek in “The Elevation of the Host” is after genuflection in adoration. The priest raises the Host so that the Faithful may also adore Jesus Christ, the true God, and true Man present on the altar. Look at the sacred Body of Jesus and then say with all your heart (interiorly): "I adore Thee, O Sacred Body of Jesus Christ, Thou art my Lord and my God; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things."

  • "The dramatic sunset over Marina Grande Sorrento"... <br />

Duomo di Sorrento is one of my favorite hidden treasures in Italy. Our last day on the Bellissimo Amalfi Coast, Father Peak offered a venerable morning Mass for our semi-exhausted group of Pilgrims upon the High Altar. Hallelujah, it was our first free day of the 2019 Pilgrimage and most were heading to Capri. I convinced my fellow Pilgrim Patrick that Marina Grande was the preferred location to commemorate this rain-threatened day. Sunday afternoon in this tiny hallowed port on the Mediterranean was bustling, not with tourists, but with energetic and unassuming locals. The misty skies were vulnerable all day with the promise of rain, but the reluctant sun penetrated the clouds for a few fortuitous moments. God painted the skies for brief moments with luminous pastel elements of abstract color. We left after lunch only to humbly return perceiving the brilliant orange skies cascading down upon the piccolo village as a gift from Heaven. Glorious rumination abounds with the thought of sacred scripture; “John answered them all, saying, ‘I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (Luke 3:16-17) I am not an expert in, nor born in Marina Grande or Sorrento, but the Gulf of Naples is where my Grandfather and his family are from. It seems that every time I have set foot in this tiny village, the skies explode with color and welcome its former lineage home. Shortly after the last picture was captured, it was meal time with the entire Pilgrimage group. A perfect dinner at my favorite restaurant, Ristorante di “Zi'Ntonio Mare, was enjoyed by all!

  • "The sun sets like fire in the sky above the Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi"...<br />

The seventh morning of our Pilgrimage, we sorrowfully said goodbye to the majestic Sorrento and set out to find the spiritual mecca of Assisi. The excitement of Saint Francis' tiny mountaintop walled village perked our eyes toward the bus windows. Hotel Giotto welcomed all!  An evening Mass with Fr. Peek in the PAX Chapel (a small underground sanctuary in Saint Francis Basilica) hosted our celebration. Mass was celebrated in honor of the wedding anniversary of Bill and Bardeen Dunphy from Atlanta, GA. I cannot say enough about the wonderful quality of people and Catholics in which I had the honor to accompany on our Pilgrimage. A small group of only 12, but mighty in character, affection, spirituality, and compassion. Bill and Bardeen epitomized this nature and shared their love will all our Pilgrims and those who witnessed our gatherings. We were also blessed by a humble, yet charismatic Priest, Father Kevin Peek. He seemed to know every other person in Italy, and subsequently, we all found new friends at dinner time. I cannot honestly conclude a more perfect Pilgrimage Priest than Father, and he was the epitome of a Spiritual guide. He not only celebrated Mass each morning in the most beautiful and prestigious Basilica’s in the world, he also led nighttime rosary walks through the Italian Strada, offered confession, interjected stories of the Saints, discussed all Italian epicurean delights with great enthusiasm, and spread the word and love of God to anyone who would listen.  After Mass, the sun once again glowed as it set behind Saint Francis Basilica. There is probably not a more exteriorly photographed church in the world, and it always seems eager to please. The Basilica poses graciously night or day and proudly extends a loving welcome not only to those who are blessed to be there but all those who witness its image created by God and the fortunate artist of capture.

  • “Saint Joan of Arc - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Joan of Arc, the patron saint of France. Joan was born to a humble family in Champagne, France during the early 15th century. She began hearing the voices of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret at a young age. In 1428, she received a vision instructing her to aid the King of France in reclaiming his kingdom from the English and Burgundian invaders. Despite facing opposition, Joan convinced members of the court and Church to grant her a small army. She entered battle carrying a banner emblazoned with the names "Jesus" and "Mary", as well as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Through her leadership and unwavering faith in God, she was able to lift the siege of Orleans in 1429 and win a series of battles. Joan and her army ultimately helped the king regain his crown and were victorious. However, Joan was later captured by Burgundian forces in May of 1430 and sold to the English. Despite pleas for assistance from her king and army, she was imprisoned and put on trial. Bishop Peter Cauchon of Beauvais presided over her trial, hoping that harsh treatment of Joan would aid his quest to become archbishop. Tragically, Joan was condemned to death on charges of heresy, witchcraft, and adultery. On May 30, 1431, she was burned at the stake in Rouen, France. She was only 19 years old. Thirty years after her death, Joan's case was retried and she was exonerated. In 1920, Pope Benedict XV canonized her. Joan is now recognized as the patron saint of France, captives, soldiers, and those ridiculed for their piety. The equestrian statue of Jeanne d'Arc, which inspired the painting by Dino Carbetta, can be seen at the Place des Pyramides in Paris.

  • “A Million Faces of Jesus by Dino Carbetta – Resplendent”…<br />

“God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives, he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.” Since early childhood, my fascination with the face of Christ resulted in a multitude of sketches, drawings, and photographs. Today, my mind’s eye continues this perception in wonderment. I yearn to see, feel, and touch this beatific vision. Blessed with humble skills, this is my current vision after three years of introspection and change of the face of Christ. I know that in heaven the just will see God by direct intuition, clearly and distinctly. Scripture and theology tell us that the blessed see God face to face. And because this vision is immediate and direct, it is also exceedingly clear and distinct. Battle against Evil: Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on an evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Angels, often referred to as messengers from God, play a significant role in Scripture, with only three being named: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Michael, whose name means "Who is like God?," is a prominent figure in the Bible. He appears in Daniel's vision as "the great prince," defending Israel against its adversaries. In Revelation, Michael leads God's heavenly armies to ultimate victory over the forces of evil. The devotion to Michael is one of the oldest angelic devotions, originating in the fourth century. The Western Church began honoring Michael and all the angels with a feast in the fifth century, showcasing the enduring appeal of this angelic figure. Gabriel also makes appearances in Daniel's visions, where he announces Michael's role in God's divine plan. However, Gabriel is perhaps best known for his encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary. It was through Gabriel's message that Mary willingly agreed to bear the Messiah, making him a central figure in the story of the Nativity. Raphael’s role in the Bible appears exclusively in the Old Testament story of Tobit. Raphael guides Tobit's son, Tobiah, through a series of incredible adventures that ultimately result in a threefold happy conclusion: Tobiah's marriage to Sarah, the miraculous healing of Tobit's blindness, and the restoration of the family's fortune. Raphael's role as a guide and healer showcases the diverse attributes of angels. The memorials of Gabriel and Raphael were added to the Roman calendar in 1921, a recognition of their importance in Christian tradition. These angels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, hold a special place in the hearts of believers and serve as messengers and protectors, exemplifying the profound spiritual connection between heaven and Earth.   • "Waiting along the canal near the parish of Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari Venice"...<br />

 The last day of our Pilgrimage was spent in one of the most iconic locations on earth, Venice! Busing to the docks at the Venetian Lagoon from Padua to catch our private boat to the Basilica di San Marco, an exemplary spiritual treasure for a special Mass. Touring the crowded Doge’s Palace proceeded, then set free to breathe in as much of the Venetian Island as possible until our final farewell dinner and return flight home in the morning. As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in a half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles by foot, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. The maze Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

Its exterior is grand, reflecting Venice's history, while inside, it's serene and simple. La Salute stands as a symbol of faith and resilience, a testament to humanity's ability to find hope even in the darkest times."

The five Advent candles represent Jesus coming as the light in the darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all four candles are lit. Each candle brings a slightly greater light into the darkness as Christmas draws nearer. Sometimes a white candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to symbolize that Jesus is with us. This can be referred to as the "Christ candle." Each of the candles lit before Christmas represents an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent. The four candles of Advent represent the four Sundays of Advent and symbolize hope, peace, joy, and love. Also, the fifth candle on Christmas represents the birth of Christ. Infant Jesus is the hope of new life, a perfect life where the old becomes new again. I can rejoice with you in surviving each day, year, and earthly life, to realize hope, which renews our spirit with peace, joy, and most of all, love. “Lord Jesus, Master of both light and darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparation for Christmas. The church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli completed in 1675 is one of two twin churches that stand like sentinels at the beginning of Via del Corso as it leaves the Piazza del Popolo. The accompanying church is Santa Maria in Montesanto. Built by Carlo Rainaldi, the two churches are seemingly indistinguishable from the exterior, however unique inside. The first chapel on the right-hand side has an altar dedicated to Our Lady of Bétharram, named after a shrine near Lourdes. It contains a copy of Renoir's Madonna at Bétharram and this beautifully famous statue. The order of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, who minister this church, was founded at Bétharram. The Abbot Orsini wrote: “Our Lady of Betharam, in the Diocese of Lescar, in the Province of Bearn. This image was found, in the year 1503, by some shepherds, who, seeing an extraordinary light on the spot where the High Altar of the Chapel now stands, came up to it and found there, an image of Our Lady, for which they had a Chapel built immediately.” “Lord Jesus, you are the source and lover of life. Reawaken in us respect for every human life. Help us to see in each child the marvelous work of our Creator. Open our hearts to welcome every child as a unique and wonderful gift. Guide the work of doctors, nurses, and midwives. May the life of a mother and her baby in the womb be equally cherished and dignified. St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe once asked the Immaculate Conception, "Who are you?" He deduced that she was not God, Adam, Eve, or the Incarnate Word. The Immaculate Conception, Mary, is different from the children of Eve as they are conceived with original sin while she is not. She is the only Immaculate Conception, and her union with the Holy Spirit is the pinnacle of love, where the Uncreated Love is joined with the created love. St. Bernadette Soubirous was told by the Virgin Mary, "I am the Immaculate Conception," and St. Francis of Assisi referred to Mary as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. St. Maximilian Kolbe explained that the union between Mary and the Holy Spirit was an interior one, where the Holy Spirit dwells in her since the moment of her existence and will continue to do so for eternity. Mary's virginal womb is reserved for the divine life of the God-Man. I find inspiration in St. Maximilian's prayer and reflect on it while viewing a painting of the Immaculate Conception as I recite the Immaculate Prayer daily.

In the Old Testament, Gabriel prevented Abraham from slaying his son Isaac and encouraged Noah to stow animals into the Ark. In the New Testament, Gabriel declared to Mary (and Joseph) that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit, which is why this Gabriel is holding an Annunciation lily. In the book of Revelation, Gabriel blows his horn to announce Judgement Day. St Mark’s Basilica is the most famous of the many churches of Venice, and the world, and a fine example of Byzantine architecture. Located just off the Grand Canal, the majestic Basilica overlooks the Piazza San Marco and adjoins the Doge's Palace. St. Mark’s Square and the Basilica are the central tourist focal points and the most populous in Venice. The relics of the Biblical Gospel author, Saint Mark, have resided in the Basilica since 828 AD. There are more than 85,000 square feet of luminous mosaics in St. Mark’s Basilica. The mosaics were accomplished over 8 centuries, mostly in gold, and the result is astonishing. It's especially resplendent just before sunset when the sun's dying rays set the golden mosaics ablaze. As I headed for the exit, I noticed a very steep staircase and followed it upward. I was met at the top by a security guard charging to see the small Museum and visit the rooftop of the Basilica. In the museum, I did take a few veiled photos of the very famous original four horses dating from Classical Antiquity which are duplicated in front of the Basilica. Meandering outside on the rooftop, I became mesmerized by the multitude of historic artwork residing on high. This knowledgeable and finally crafted saintly angel, Gabriel stood atop the nearest column adjacent to the rooftop, a close-up view not often seen.

A familiar grandeur and ambiance welcomed us to Roma on the first evening Mass of our 2019 Pilgrimage. As the evening sun descended through the windows above the grand hallways where Priest of many languages offered Confession during the daytime, I took advantage of the opportunity with an Italian Priest speaking in his native language...a great blessing! Dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, the Basilica of St. John Lateran is the first among the four major basilicas of Rome. It is also the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, and is thus known as the "Cathedral of Rome and of the World." Built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano was the first Christian/Catholic church erected in Rome. The present structure of the Basilica resembles Saint Peter's Basilica, and the ancient church was residence of the Papacy until the (1377) return from exile in Avignon and permanent relocation to the Vatican. Many Popes were responsible for repair and additions to the Basilica’s overall splendor and importance throughout the last 1700 years. This image was inspired upon noticing dozens of tiny cherub angels holding up the archways of a long and narrow hallway leading to a sacred and Holy Door of the Archbasilica. Each angel is unique and has a different face and expression. One cannot help being overcome with humility observing the veneration of the Basilica’s Piccoli Angeli protecting all the wondrous souls within.

Arriving in Sorrento in late spring, the sunlight colorfully lingered before surrendering to the famous Sorrento moon. One of the highlights of my Italian journey was stumbling upon the tiny Marina Grande fishing village. It was as if I’d walked back in time and merged into this ageless world with its own pace and traditions. Life here seemingly has its own rhythm- a strongly united community tenaciously anchored to its family principles, hard work, and religious traditions. They love the sea and live in symbiosis with it; here time seems to move more slowly than anywhere in the world. In 1558 the Turks plundered the town of Sorrento, and after the Saracens left the inhabitants constructed a solid town wall. My eyes were blessed with an extraordinarily beautiful canvas as a permanent smile measured my face, and my camera gazed upon this tiny bay nestled within the bygone fishing village. I meandered about cautiously, glancing at fishermen humbly repairing their nets. At the heart of the Marina is the Church of Sant’Anna, patron saint of the village. Restaurant Zi' Ntonio a Mare, which jutted out into the bay, was crowded with hungry guests and serenaded by an Italiano singer who, ironically, was singing Dean Martin songs which echoed throughout the bay; guests and this photographer were delightfully enchanted. I gently crept along the water’s edge and tried to capture the perfect, yet the very personal portrait of this piccola baia italiana della perfezione (Italian small bay of perfection). As night fell, the water reflections and resting fishing boats posed for a few more images as fish jumped for their dinner! It was time to enjoy the gifts of the day’s catch at Ristorante di “Zi'Ntonio Mare. The epicureo delights, especially the calamari, olive bread, wine, and the main course of Il pesce San Pietro (The St. Peter's fish), was authentic perfection…just like this perfect piccola bay of Marina Grande.

  • “The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

Pentecost is a significant celebration in the Christian tradition. It commemorates the Holy Spirit's arrival upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who gathered in the Upper Room. A powerful wind filled the room, and tongues of fire rested on their heads, enabling them to communicate in different languages. Although some assumed the Christians were intoxicated, Peter clarified that the Holy Spirit was responsible for this unusual occurrence. The Holy Spirit also granted the Apostles the necessary gifts and fruits to fulfill the great commission- to preach the Gospel to all nations. This fulfilled Christ's promise to the Apostles that they would be "clothed with power" before being sent forth to spread the Gospel (Luke 24:46-49) and is equivalent to the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Confirmation, a sacrament in the Catholic Church, deepens an individual's relationship with the Church by imparting the Holy Spirit's gifts through the bishop's imposition of hands and anointing with oils. The sacrament is administered by bishops who have received the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders, uniting the recipient more closely to the Church's apostolic origins and its mission of bearing witness to Christ. Confirmation is also considered a sacrament of initiation that brings individuals closer to the Church, deepening the grace of baptism and leaving an indelible mark on the soul. Let us pray: "Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love."

Gospel Jn 17:11-19 “Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: ‘Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. When I was with them, I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled.<br />
But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the Evil One. They do not belong to the world<br />

Our Lady of Fatima’s confident declaration was: “My Immaculate Heart will triumph”. Pope Benedict XVI interpreted this utterance as follows: “The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remains so for all time. The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God. But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word. From that the word that prevails from that time forth in the world, you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise. Siena is home to the Eucharistic Miracle, one of the world's longest-ongoing miracles. On August 14, 1730, thieves broke into the Church of St. Francis and stole a ciborium containing consecrated hosts. However, since 1730, the hosts have remained fresh and sweet-smelling. The wall mechanically spun around and revealed the Eucharistic Miracle to us. After prayer, I moved to the back and abidingly captured this mystical, spiritual, and reverent manifestation. The Madonna of Fatima stood majestically guarding the precious Hosts.

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of St. Mary of Health), commonly known as La Salute, is one of the largest, most iconic, and prominent churches of Venice. It stands in a prominent position at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon. In October 1630, the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from the raging Bubonic Plague, which decimated one-third of the Venetian population, a new church would be constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is an ornate, massive structure in its exterior; however, it is quite small interiorly. I am not sure if it was ever an active parish but more of a shrine with little room for seating. The steps wrapping around the front and sides make a perfect destination for relaxation during warm Venetian days. Interior windows open to the sky which allows for a great deal of sunlight, and as I meandered around I noticed a beautiful crucifix near the confessional. The strong rays of sunshine illuminated the face of Christ just enough to encourage one to examine their conscience one last time before entering into Sacrament of Confession.

  • “The boat of San Pietro slumbers in the evening sun - Marina Grande Sorrento” … <br />

Duomo di Sorrento is one of my favorite hidden treasures in Italy. On our last day on the Bellissimo Amalfi Coast, Father Peak offered a venerable morning Mass for our semi-exhausted group of Pilgrims upon the High Altar. Hallelujah, it was our first free day of the 2019 Pilgrimage, and most were heading to Capri. I convinced my fellow Pilgrim Patrick that Marina Grande was the preferred location to commemorate this rain threatened day. Sunday afternoon in this tiny, hallowed port on the Mediterranean was bustling, not with tourists, but with energetic and unassuming locals. The misty skies were vulnerable all day to the threat of rain, but the reluctant sun penetrated the clouds for a few fortuitous moments. God painted the skies for brief moments with luminous pastel elements of abstract color. A lonely white boat gleamed in the late evening sun resting upon the wet sand. Saint Matthew’s account of Peter trying to walk on water came to mind: “Peter said to him in reply, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down.   • "Light from Heaven - Sistine Chapel - Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Rome"... <br />

After Mass in the Crucifix Chapel on the second morning of the inaugural Pilgrimage I organized, we were joined by our Roman tour guide for the day. As we listened and ventured around the glorious Basilica, my eyes and camera began to wander. I became stupefied by the grand chapel to the right of the main altar with the rising sun peering through the window just below the cupola. I discreetly wandered in and out in hopes it would shine upon the Holy Crib. On my 4th attempt, my judicious endeavor was rewarded. A young woman in a splendid white dress walked directly into the heavenly light. Her luminescence and celestial reverence gave the appearance of a wondrous and radiant angel in admiration of the sacred relic. The right transept is called the Sistine Chapel, containing the elaborate tomb of Pope Sixtus V (1521-90) and decorated with frescoes and reliefs of events from his reign. The chapel centers on a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib, and the burial place of Saint Jerome, the 4th-century Doctor of the Church. The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, St. Mary Major has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render St. Mary Major a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of man inspired by God.

This late afternoon image was captured while standing upon remnants atop the mountainside of Assisi viewing down to the resting Basilica of Saint Francis. Upon arrival early that day I began taking photos the second I parked at Hotel Giotto just inside the walls in the foothills of Assisi. Perhaps Saint Francis arranged the dramatically perfect skies and coordinated every encounter. Beginning at the Basilica of Saint Frances where this image was captured, every second of the climb to the top of the mountain to the fortress Rocca Maggiore, a new surprise awaited around every corner. Upon my final steps to the top at almost sunset, the clouds parted, and the low sun brightened as a slight mist of rain came down. Looking back over my shoulder, the appearance of a rainbow shone down between the Duomo of Saint Rufino and the Basilica of Saint Clare. After the first small rainbow dissipated...I moved about two hundred yards to the opposite view facing the setting sun over the Basilica of St. Francis. I was fortunate to capture several dramatic images just before another rainbow appeared behind me...a spectacular and blessed show by the hand of God. The Basilica, which was begun in 1228 honoring the life of Saint Francis, is probably the most exteriorly photographed church in the world, and it always seems eager to please. The Basilica poses graciously night or day and proudly extends a loving welcome not only to those who are blessed to be there but all those who witness its image created by God and the fortunate Pilgrims, tourists, and artists.

Perhaps Saint Francis arranged the dramatically perfect skies and coordinated every encounter. Beginning at the Basilica of Saint Francis, every second of the climb to the top of the mountain to the fortress Rocca Maggiore, a new surprise awaited around every corner. Never stopping for lunch or dinner, I continued to photograph new images well past sundown. Traversing the narrow steps and Strada back down to the bottom of the mountaintop to my hotel, the walk seemed a bit less strenuous and I felt a sense of gratitude and completion of my day-long journey. However, the very quiet Assisi seemed to have fallen into a deep slumber in the early nighttime leaving all the restaurants closed for the night. Pleading with the hotel manager, she desperately arranged a late dinner at one of the most iconic restaurants in Assisi, La Locanda Del Cardinale, which was built over an ancient Roman settlement dating from the first century B.C., with glass floors to view the mosaics below. Walking back at midnight to the hotel, the peaceful Assisi continued to call out. As the serene, quiet Basilica of Saint Francis stood majestically and glowed in the midnight skies, one could not help but to acquiesce to its mystical yearning for just a few more memorable portraits in the cool dew of the early morning air.

  • “Angelic Woman Resting Under the Sun at the Cathedral of San Rufino in Assisi”…<br />

Beginning at the Basilica of Saint Francis, every second of the climb to the top of the mountain and the fortress of Rocca Maggiore was highlighted time after time by a vision of something more mystical and spiritual than the last. Upon my final steps to the top at almost sunset, the clouds parted and the low sun brightened as a slight mist of rain came down. The climb to the top was fraught with a multitude of very steep and exhaustive staircases, but the one consolation was the dramatic anticipation of the divine scenery emerging in the distance. Rising slowly up the Assisi hillside after a slow ascent to the highest peak, around the final corner awaited the Romanesque Duomo of Saint Rufino completed in the 12th century. In this church, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, and many of their original disciples were baptized among the many spiritual and historical missions of the Duomo. As I rose to the top and turned the corner, the low late evening sun shone brightly on the façade of the Duomo illuminating a singular woman resting in the sun by the side door. It had become damp and chilly outside, and the warm sun illuminated her angelic face so much so, I froze in my tracks and gazed in awe upon this ethereal vision. I honestly thought she might fade away as I lifted my camera for one quick photograph from about 40 yards away. Perhaps she heard the click of the camera shutter and opened her eyes because she smiled and walked away. I wished she would have stayed longer. At least I have this one photo; however, a photo will never be able to capture the true essence of this mystical and surreal moment in time.

Daniel 10: 5-6 “As I looked up, I saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of fine gold around his waist. His body was like chrysolite, his face shone like lightning, his eyes were like fiery torches, his arms and feet looked like burnished bronze, and the sound of his voice was like the roar of a multitude.” Genesis 1:27 “God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Since early childhood, my fascination with the face of Christ resulted in a multitude of sketches, drawings, and photographs. Today, my mind’s eye continues this perception in wonderment. I yearn to see, feel and touch this beatific vision. Blessed with humble skills, this is my current vision after three years of introspection and change of the face of Christ. I know that in heaven the just will see God by direct intuition, clearly and distinctly. Scripture and theology tell us that the blessed see God face to face. And because this vision is immediate and direct, it is also exceedingly clear and distinct. The blessed see God, not merely according to the measure of His likeness imperfectly reflected in creation, but they see Him as He is, after the manner of His own Being. 1 Corinthians 13:12 “At present, we are looking at a confused reflection in a mirror; then, we shall see face to face; now, I have only glimpses of knowledge; then, I shall recognize God as he has recognized me.”

  • “The Venice canal reflects the small bridge in the early evening light - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

I am not sure if I am the first to describe Venice as “organic;” however, there has never been a more perfect description to define its dynamic persona. Venice is perhaps the most uniquely iconic seaside city in the world, and its impression changes by the minute with the ever-changing light and active tide coming in and out. Flying into Venice via the USA, I was met with torrential rains in the early morning, which finally gave way to afternoon sunshine. The creaky, wet, gloomy, old, decaying Venice sinking and soaking in the morning rain… opened like flower petals in the springtime at the first glimpse of sunlight. The organic lagoon began to blossom as if the decay became antique, the gloom became a passion, the creaky became sweet sounds, and the desperate island illuminated with life, color, and hope. Heading out the first afternoon with no sleep since leaving Atlanta the day before, I was exhausted yet had so much adrenaline and utter excitement emanating from my soul. My heart, eyes, and brain forced me to follow the light and take photos; thus, the first day of thirty began with number 1 of 6500 images. Not until I began writing these descriptions did I realize that many of these were taken the day I arrived in Venice…it was sensory overload. Canal sunsets became the norm of my three days in Venice.

  • “Unique View through Medieval Arches of the Cathedral of Sorrento”…<br />

The main church in Sorrento is the Duomo, also known as the Cathedral of San Filippo and San Giacomo, which is concealed right in the heart of the town. Sorrento is not known as a pilgrimage site, but a beautiful seaside resort village. The Duomo dates as far back as the 11th century but was completely rebuilt in the 15th century in Romanesque style. The façade is very plain for a Cathedral of such interior grandeur, which has three naves separated by pillars and a very ornate ceiling. Next to the cathedral is a bell tower resting on an arch with four columns, which dates back to medieval times. Inconspicuously, I entered the cathedral and saw only a dozen elderly women sitting in the front pews reciting aloud a novena. Not wanting to disturb them, I ventured around quietly and was taken aback by the reverent beauty and peaceful aura of the magnificent Duomo. I discovered areas where the old Duomo met the new, and it seemed that some images were quite accidental. I noticed that peering through a small and out of the way opening, I could see back to a lighted statue of a patron Bishop. The juxtaposition of the descending and uniquely colored archways gave a great appearance of depth and perspective.

  • "Madonna in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo Rome"... <br />

After a spiritual Mass at St. Peters Basilica and an intense tour of the Vatican, lunchtime with my friend and pilgrim, Patrick, proved inspirational. Forgoing the Coliseum, we aimed for Piazza del Popolo. Encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. Our eyes were on the famous Caravaggio paintings located in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The “Crucifixion of Peter” and the “Conversion of Saint Paul” were found to be elusive on my previous visit. The security guard blocked the doorway and turned off the lights to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. We found the Basilica under reconstruction, waiting for an opening, then rushed inside to find darkness and disarray everywhere. Finally, finding the dark chapel, our eyes could not focus enough to discover the paintings. Suddenly, the light arose and the Caravaggio’s were an arm’s length away. We expeditiously actuated our cameras and euphorically clicked away. Just as hastily, a mysterious guard clicked off the lights. As we calmed down and gathered benevolent thoughts, we aimed our startled eyes toward the exit. The fragmented sunlight streaming into the dark basilica from the vestibule and front doors appeared like a dream. As I vacillated forward, a dark, but luminous statue absorbed by sunlight appeared to gaze upon me with precocious compassion. Her motherly expression offered a perception of love and gratitude. Upon exit, the Eternal City awaited our next impassioned venture.

  • “Father Peek Consecration Prayer - Private Mass in the Basilica of Sant'Antonio da Padova”…<br />

One wonderful element of our Pilgrimage of 2019 was our Mass schedule in the most distinguished Basilica’s, Cathedrals, and churches in Italy and in fact the world. Often we found ourselves at the Main Altars, Sacristies, or prestigious chapels. The reverent and holy auspicious with unseen views containing profound and historic approbation was at times overwhelming. Contemplating those divine and holy who came before, left us with the feeling of wonderment. The Basilica of Saint Anthony dated back to the early year of 1233. I found myself mystified by the mere size and aura surrounding it, and especially the heavenly altar. The original arrangement is of a three-dimensional 'sacred conversation' with the six statues of the saints – Francis, Anthony, Justina, Daniel, Louis, and Prosdocimus – positioned around the “Madonna with Child” under a dome supported by eight columns and arches, all bronzed by the famous Renaissance Tuscan sculptor Donatello. As with most prestigious Basilica’s, no photos are allowed, which mostly rendered this photographer reverent, but sad. We Pilgrims, paralyzed in capture and armed only with ‘whispers’ in our ears to hear the Italian tour guide, followed intently from brilliant chapel to chapel. The Basilica is austere, mysterious, and solemn, yet capacious, monumental, and impossible to notice every grand detail. However, be emboldened that this Pilgrimage Church is one of the eight international shrines recognized by the Holy See. It is a symbol of faith and hope for all Christian believers. I believe Saint Anthony would be honored and proud to offer Mass here.

It was a glimpse of His divine glory, preparing the apostles for the challenges and difficulties ahead, particularly His passion and crucifixion. In the Catholic tradition, the Feast of the Transfiguration is a day of celebration and reflection on the glory of Christ and the promise of His resurrection, reminding believers of the eventual transformation that awaits them in Christ's likeness. Overall, the Transfiguration holds significant theological importance in Catholicism, emphasizing the divinity of Christ and His continuity with the Old Testament, and providing encouragement and hope for believers in their journey of faith.

  • “Ascension of the Lord - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

Luke 24:46-53 narrates "The Ascension of the Lord." Jesus reveals his resurrection to his disciples after three days of suffering and stresses the significance of spreading the message of repentance and forgiveness of sins in his name to all nations, starting from Jerusalem. He reminds his followers that they are witnesses to these events and assures them that he will send his Father's promise upon them. However, he instructs them to stay in the city until they receive power from above. After blessing them, Jesus ascends to heaven. The disciples enthusiastically return to Jerusalem, continuously praising God in the temple. The Ascension signifies that although Jesus may not be present in a specific location, he is always among us. We have an Advocate who defends and guides us through life and a community that lives out their faith with us in our daily lives. Together, we reveal the lordship of God's love to the world through the Risen Jesus Christ, who ascended to heaven and advocates for us. "And when I am lifted from the earth, I will draw all people to myself." The lifting up of Jesus on the cross signifies and announces his ascent into heaven, which begins it. Jesus Christ, the only priest of the new and everlasting Covenant, "entered not into a sanctuary made by human hands... but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf." He is the center and principal actor of the liturgy that honors the Father in heaven. Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father, signifying the inauguration of his kingdom and the fulfillment of the prophet Daniel's vision regarding the Son of man. "To him was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed." The apostles became witnesses to the "kingdom will have no end."

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, encompassed within its sacred walls is a variety of artwork unequaled in the world. The Basilica is comprised of great works by many of the preeminent artists, such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat, and Donato Bramante. “Cappella Cybo” is the second side chapel in the right-hand aisle of the Basilica, which is famous for the beauty of its paintings, the preciousness of marble revetments covering its Bellissimo walls, and the renowned importance of the artists involved in its construction. The chapel is regarded as one of the most significant sacral monuments erected in Rome in the last quarter of the 17th century. The huge altarpiece, painted with oil on the wall, is one of the most important works of Carlo Maratta, finished in 1686. It depicts the Disputation over the Immaculate Conception with the Four Doctors of the Church, St Augustine, John Chrysostom, John the Evangelist, and Gregory the Great celebrating the purity of the Virgin. I knew in advance of the great Caravaggio paintings, especially the “Crucifixion of Peter;” however, I was not prepared for the security guard blocking the doorway and turning off the light to the small chapel inside the Basilica every time I came near. The guard courageously kept a watchful eye on everyone with a camera to protect the integrity of the incredibly famous artwork. I edged to the back, peered around the corner with a telephoto lens, and prevailed with a few pictures from a distance of the famous paintings just for my viewing pleasure. However, as I returned home and upon making a close inspection of the pictures, it was not the Caravaggios I had coveted, but an imposter. The guard blocked the shallow entrance and within a few steps inside, to the right and left ...the Caravaggios hid from view as if to tell me to try yet another day.

  • “Sunset view of Manarola from the azure Tyrrhenian Sea” …<br />

I began my daily journey at the northernmost town of Monterosso and took the train to the southernmost town of Riomaggiore. I sailed up the coast photographing each Cinque Terre town along the way aboard the Angelina Dada. This image was composed of standing on the rooftop of the antique 28-foot Angelina’s galley with my arms around the mast and my 25-pound camera bag strapped over my shoulder, creating a human tripod for support. I could not help noticing tourists in each village photographing our boat as we sailed up and down the coast; perhaps it was the image of a silly photographer hanging on for dear life as the waves wobbled the boat side to side in anticipation of a splashdown?! Leaving for my destination of Monterosso, the radiant sunset illuminated the sky and the azure sea of the Mediterranean. I was convinced to sail back to Riomaggiore with my gracious guides Claudio and Eddie of the "Cinque Terre dal Mare" sailing excursions. We arrived just in time for the perfect magic-hour glow of the setting sun. After a nice dinner...I caught the last train at midnight back home to Monterosso. There is a great appeal in each of the five Cinque Terre villages, each with a different history, people, elements, and culture. This illuminating sunset of Manarola was captured just before arriving back in Riomaggiore. Arrivederci, Manarola!

  • “The Church of Santa Maddalena is surrounded by Roe Deer, both enjoying the sunset over the Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…<br />

The Church of St. Magdalene resides in a small village located in the Dolomites of Italy. Both, the village and the church, are symbols of the Val di Funes. This tiny picturesque village of just 377 people is located in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Northern Italy. Historically, the church was built where the miraculous image of Santa Maddalena was washed up by the Fopal River. Saint Mary Magdalene church is mentioned beginning in 1394. The current form of the nave with a sloping base and a slightly grooved roof cornice, with pear and round bar on the pointed arch portal with a red chalk inscription, was complete in 1492. The mural exterior is the Crucifix on the gable in a niche with a donkey's back, weather-beaten, early XVI century. St. Christopher is lively and virtuoso in movement with a fluttering, wrinkled robe. Interiorly, the keystones on the vault, are bust portraits of Mary with the Christ Child and saints. The valley, as you can see, Val di Funes is stunningly beautiful. Summer, it’s very green and dotted with colorful flowers. Winter, it’s covered with snow, and the ragged Dolomite peaks, pierce the sky toward the heavens. Mary Magdalene is the first among the women following Jesus to proclaim Him as having overcome death. She is the first to announce the joyful message of Easter. But she also proved she was among those who loved Him most when she stood at the foot of the Cross on Mount Calvary together with Mary, His Mother, and the disciple, St. John. She did not deny him or run away in fear as the other disciples did, but remained close to Him every moment, up to and including the tomb. The Italian Roe Deer rejoice in the beauty of God’s creation.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph pray for us!” On the last of three glorious days in Positano, I arose early to catch the sunrise over the village. However, at about 10:00 am …the cold rains came down dampening the glorious sun. I caught the rain-soaked ferry down the coast to the seaside town of Amalfi. The Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea/Duomo di Amalfi is usually packed with tourists bused and ferried from hundreds of miles away, but with the dreary weather, many chose to stay away. There has been a church on this site in Amalfi since 596 AD and the one built in the ninth century still stands today. The present cathedral was built adjacent to the old one in the early 13th century to provide a suitable resting place for St. Andrew the Apostle. The two were originally joined together to form a single, six-nave Romanesque cathedral. Pieces of the newer walls have been taken down to expose parts of the walls of the ancient original church, and one can ponder history with this glimpse back in time. I was enraptured by the sacred art devotional of the Madonna and Baby Jesus as I exited the magnificent Cathedral, a forever remembrance of my cherished rainy day in Amalfi. [Acts 14:17] “Yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts.”

After a solemn sunrise morning where I essentially had Positano all to myself, I began my strenuous journey down and back up the mountainside. I noticed a perfectly beautiful view on the veranda of one of Positano’s villas; however, a large gate was padlocked and prevented my sly entrance. Descending to my knees and extending the barrel of the lens through an opening in the fence, I was able to capture a single image. Sometimes it pays to break a few rules to capture a perfect vision. There was only one occasion that I was able to pre-plan taking photos at sunrise and that was during the last day of three in Positano. It takes much planning, logistics, and familiarity to figure the best locations and the proper angles and positions of the sun. My third morning was ideal and fortuitous as it began raining about 10:00 am which gave me perfect clouds for sunrise, finally ending with a very cold wind just in time for sunset. This image is one of the rare photos of a slumbering Positano in the dewing morning around 6:50 am at the end of May….the beginning of peak tourist season. By 8:00 am, this tiny seaside village is bustling with tourists and shop owners, and restaurateurs trying to satisfy every need. All in all, Positano was by far the plushest of all the locations I visited in Italy, and I was blessed to witness everything in full bloom. “Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them.” LUKE 12:27.

  • "The Crucifix - The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli Assisi Museum - Painting by Dino Carbetta"...<br />

Portiuncula is a town and a parish situated about three-quarters of a mile from Assisi. The town has grown up around the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels. It was of this little church moved within the Basilica that St. Francis recognized his vocation in the year 1208, and it was where St. Francis spent most of his life. In 1211, the Benedictines gave him the little chapel of St. Mary of the Angels or the Portiuncula, which is a “little portion” of land. The first Franciscan convent was also formed nearby. The Portiuncula was also where St. Francis received the vows of St. Clare. St. Francis died here on October 3, 1226, and on his deathbed, he recommended the chapel to the faithful protection and care of his brothers. The Museo della Basilica is in another section of the convent. Among the most important works kept here are the "Crucifix “painted on wood by Giunta Pisano (1236-40). The return of Francis, a penitent man, contemplating his future in the Church... But God had other plans, and Francis did not travel far. His search for conversion led him to the ancient church at San Damiano. While he was praying there, he heard Christ on the crucifix speak to him, "Francis, repair my church." Francis assumed this meant the crumbling building he was in. He later realized it was his call to rebuild the entire Church. He read the command to the rich young man to sell all his good and give to the poor, the order to the apostles to take nothing on their journey, and the demand to take up the cross daily. "Here is our rule," Francis said -- as simple, and as seemingly impossible, as that. He was going to do what no one thought possible any more -- live by the Gospel.

  • “Assisi front door with a lot of Character”…<br />

Italy is famous for its display of fresh and beautiful flowers and foliage outside the windows and doors throughout the countryside, and Assisi was no different except for the perfection of their presentation. I am sure the Chamber of Commerce in Assisi is quite busy maintaining the continuity and beauty of Assisi, but perhaps there is no need as the residents all seem perfectly happy to respect and display all its beauty. The streets, walkways, and general environment were the most immaculate of any town I witnessed in Italy and the most religious of any place on my journey. The town became a mystic and peaceful shrine in the early darkness of night after all the tourists departed, and all the prayers offered that day reflected and echoed off the ancient walls. Even the vending machines contained Rosaries, and its residents strolled about dressed in their religious attire with permanent smiles upon their faces. I am sure there are many remarkable religious destinations in the world but this photographer’s opinion…Assisi has no spiritual equal on this earth.

"In quaint Sorrento, near the Amalfi Coast, lies my heart's gem - Duomo di Sorrento. During our Pilgrimage in 2019, Father Peak led a cherished Mass at the majestic High Altar. Skipping Capri, I chose Marina Grande to commemorate this special day. I convinced my friend Patrick that Marina Grande held a unique charm, ideal for celebrating this thrilling journey! As we arrived at Marina Grande on a rainy Sunday afternoon, the bustling port was not teeming with tourists but filled with lively and unpretentious locals. The skies remained overcast, hinting at the possibility of rain, but the sun's occasional appearance painted the heavens with brief moments of pastel colors. Amidst this picturesque setting, a solitary boat rocked gently near the mouth of the piccolo marina, gleaming in the soft light. On its stern, the boat bore the name "Gesù di Nazareth" - a striking coincidence. The name brought to mind Saint Matthew's account of Jesus calming the stormy seas: how Jesus, despite the storm's fury, slept peacefully while his disciples feared for their lives. Upon their plea for salvation, Jesus arose and, with a commanding presence, silenced the winds and waves, filling the men with awe at his power over nature (Matt. 8:23-27). Later, we eagerly returned to the marina, ready to capture the mesmerizing evening seascape. It was a peaceful prelude to the Pilgrimage group's dinner at my favorite restaurant, "Zi'Ntonio Mare." In Sorrento's charming surroundings, amidst the beauty of Marina Grande and the Duomo's sacredness, I found solace and inspiration. The experience reminded me of the awe-inspiring power of nature and the comforting presence of faith, symbolized by the boat's name - "Gesù di Nazareth." These memories will forever hold a special place in my heart, etched alongside the breathtaking landscapes and spiritual moments of our unforgettable adventure.

  • “Pentecost - Painting by Dino Carbetta”...<br />

As I neared completion of this painting called “Pentecost,” I became overwhelmed and replete with emotion. It was not the composition or finality of another symbolic artwork, but the actual memory of my extraordinary Pentecost when I received the blessings and Sacrament of Catholic Confirmation. Archbishop Donoghue anointed my forehead with oil on the Altar of the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta in front of an overflowing church, and my Catholic Brother and childhood friend Bob Casey’s hand on my shoulder. The first example of Confirmation can be found in Acts 8:14-17. Confirmation sponsors “bring the candidates to receive the sacrament, present them to the minister for anointing, and will later help them fulfill their baptismal promises faithfully under the influence of the Holy Spirit whom they have received.” I was overwhelmed then, and feel the same as now. Confirmation is a Sacrament in the Catholic Church in which the one who is confirmed receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the imposition of hand and anointing with oils by the bishop. It’s considered a sacrament of initiation which means that it brings you deeper into communion with the Church. “Bishops are the successors of the apostles. They have received the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders. The administration of this sacrament demonstrates clearly that its effects are to unite those who receive it more closely to the Church, her apostolic origins, and her mission of bearing witness to Christ.” It is the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. Confirmation brings Catholics a deepening of baptismal grace and unites us more firmly to Christ. It increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit and leaves an indelible mark on the soul just like baptism. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

The main church in Sorrento is the Duomo, also known as the Cathedral of San Filippo and San Giacomo, which is concealed right in the heart of the town. Sorrento is not known as a pilgrimage site but as a beautiful seaside resort village. The Duomo dates as far back as the 11th century but was completely rebuilt in the 15th century in Romanesque style. The façade is very plain for a Cathedral of such interior grandeur, which has three naves separated by pillars and a very ornate ceiling. Next to the cathedral is a bell tower resting on an arch with four columns, which dates back to medieval times. Inconspicuously, I entered the cathedral and saw only a dozen elderly women sitting in the front pews reciting aloud a novena. Not wanting to disturb them, I ventured around quietly and was taken aback by the magnificent Duomo's reverent beauty and peaceful aura. Hanging above the Altar was a lifelike Crucifix. It was not as large as it appears in the photos; however, the closer I ventured…the more mesmerized I became. Slowly and quietly moving about, from different angles I was able to capture dramatic images of window light mystically illuminating Christ. This image of sunlight shining through the window is one of the most meaningful and favorite images from my Italian journey. If you gaze for a minute or two, I believe you will also be transported on a remarkable journey. I have painted this image many times, striving for perfection. However, I have ultimately realized perfection is only found in the crucified one. Hanging above the Altar of the Duomo di Sorrento was a lifelike Crucifix. My portfolio contains many different images of this mesmerizing crucifixion. It has become a primary focus of my artistic study of light and His sacred image. This “living” singular portrayal of Christ has become a major influence in my pursuit of religious art. Hopefully, the viewer will be moved by His spiritual and painful unveiling. Touching the very heart of those who empathize with this immediate closeness of the Passion of Christ and this evolving artistic impressionistic painting. 🌹Ascending from a tiny cell within Le Celle, I noticed the radiant sunlight illuminating the ancient stone stairway. Considering the location, its 1000 years of age, and its Saintly founding fathers, one could not help feeling spiritually exalted as the bright light immersed my ascension to the top. I didn’t quite reach Heaven at the height of the mystic climb, but perhaps the illumination rendered a touch of hope to a weary and petitioning photo artist. “(Gospel - Lk 24:1-12) At daybreak on the first day of the week the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them. They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day.” And they remembered his words.   • “The Pontifical Swiss Guard protects the bronze door of the Vatican – Rome”…<br />

My Roman tour guide at the Vatican, who knew all who worked there, made sure he presented every opportunity for me knowing I was a photographer/artist. For this and several other images, he talked with security allowing me to enter areas off-limits to photograph through doorways and windows. This huge bronze door has been the official entrance to the Apostolic Palace since 1663 and is permanently watched by three Swiss guards. The Pontifical Swiss Guard was founded in 1506 and in the 18th-century several Swiss soldiers were recruited from various European courts to form the close-quarter guards of the kings. Michelangelo designed the official--highly colorful--uniform, and guards also wear a long sword and a traditional halberd. The bronze door opens to a long corridor leading to the famous steps of the Scala Regia, which was designed by Bernini to appear longer and wider than in actuality. Unfortunately, this architectural wonder is closed to visitors, as is the rest of the Apostolic Palace where the Pope lives; only official visitors are admitted inside.

On the last of three glorious days in Positano, I woke early to witness the sunrise over the village. However, around 10:00 am, the cold rains poured down, dampening the once magnificent sun. Undeterred, I decided to take a rain-soaked ferry down the coast to the charming seaside town of Amalfi. The Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea, also known as the Duomo di Amalfi, is usually teeming with tourists who have traveled for miles by bus or ferry. Yet, due to the dreary weather, many opted to stay away. A church has graced this spot in Amalfi since the year 596 AD, and remarkably, the ninth-century structure still stands proudly today. In the early 13th century, the present cathedral was built adjacent to the old one, serving as a final resting place for the revered St. Andrew the Apostle. Initially, the two buildings were joined to form a single, magnificent six-nave Romanesque cathedral. While exploring the cathedral, I discovered a fascinating piece of history. Portions of the newer walls have been carefully removed, revealing glimpses of the ancient original church. As I passed by one of these exposed walls on three separate occasions, I failed to notice anything extraordinary. It was only when I stepped back and gazed intently that the ancient Pieta gradually materialized before my eyes. The mystical beauty of this faded image left me astounded. Seizing the opportunity, I captured two photographs, intending to merge them into a panoramic view, fervently hoping that the essence of this miraculous vision would manifest. For over 1500 years, God has preserved this unique fresco, but its fading state suggests that it will soon vanish completely. I consider myself truly blessed to have beheld this extraordinary sight and fervently aspire to safeguard it for future generations.

  • “Climb to Christ - St. Andrew Cathedral of Amalfi”… <br />

On the last of three glorious days in Positano, I arose early to catch sunrise over the village. However, at about 10:00 am …the cold rains came down dampening the glorious sun. I caught the rain soaked ferry down the coast to the seaside town of Amalfi. The Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea/Duomo di Amalfi is usually packed with tourists bused and ferried from hundreds of miles away, but with the dreary weather, many chose to stay away. Stairs near the east end descend into the Crypt of St. Andrew, where the saint's relics are kept in the central altar. The crypt is decorated with beautiful Baroque murals from 1660. Upon leaving the crypt, I turned to ascend the stairs and with little window light because of the rain, a single light illuminated the crucifix stopping me in my tracks. Others behind me also paused as I quickly took out my camera to capture this dramatic image. Tourists actually gathered behind me as I slowly moved up the steps taking more photos; perhaps for the first time, others took notice of this divinatory and transcendent vision.

Santa Maria del Fiore (also known simply as the Duomo) is the cathedral of Florence known for its distinctive Renaissance dome. Its name ("Saint Mary of the Flower") refers to the lily, the symbol of Florence. The impressive Gothic cathedral complex includes the Duomo, the famous baptistery and a campanile. Built in 1294 to be the largest Roman Catholic Church in the world, it is still the largest masonry dome in the world. Walking down the strada, and turning the corner to view the massive Duomo painted against the sky was captivating. I stopped in my tracks and began taking photos; however, the huge Florence crowds prevented most images from ground level. This was one of the first images I photographed noticing the ancient architecture of the Duomo competing across the narrow strada with the more modern buildings of Firenze.

  • "High altar crucifix from the back of the Papal Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua"... <br />

I consider this magnificent rear view of the High Altar in St. Anthony’s Basilica looking toward Donatello’s very famous “Crucifix in Padua” one of my few forbidden and miraculous images of my 2019 Pilgrimage to Italy. I was unaware of the mere size and ancient grandeur of the basilica begun in 1233 but found myself mystified by the aura surrounding it and especially the heavenly altar. The original arrangement is of a three-dimensional 'sacred conversation' with the six statues of the saints – Francis, Anthony, Justina, Daniel, Louis and Prosdocimus – positioned around the “Madonna with Child” under a dome supported by eight columns and arches, all bronzed by the famous Renaissance Tuscan sculptor Donatello. As with most prestigious Basilica’s, no photos are allowed, which mostly rendered this photographer reverent, but sad. We Pilgrims, paralyzed in capture and armed only with ‘whispers’ in our ears to hear the Italian tour guide, followed intently from brilliant chapel to chapel. Deceptively, I found myself directly behind the elevated “High Altar,” and as I curiously climbed the steps toward the locked Iron Gate, Donatello’s celestial bronze crucifix began to appear. My surreptitious movement kept me from being noticed by the security guards and our Italian guide. I covertly rested my lens through the iron bars, and quietly depressed the shutter on my camera. Often called “Il Santo” by the locals of Padua, one cannot escape feeling overwhelmed by its majesty, and emanation of spirituality and reverence. The Basilica is austere, mysterious, and solemn, yet capacious, monumental, and impossible to notice every grand detail. However, be emboldened that this Pilgrimage Church is one of the eight international shrines recognized by the Holy See. It is a symbol of faith and hope for all Christian believers. I believe Saint Anthony would be honored and proud to offer Mass here.

Mary Magdalene's story holds a special place in the Catholic tradition as she was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and played a significant role in his ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. Her unwavering faith and profound transformation are a testament to the transformative power of God's love. Mary Magdalene was integral to Jesus' followers and supported him and his disciples with her resources. She was present during his crucifixion and assisted in preparing his body for burial. Additionally, she was the first to discover the empty tomb, becoming the initial witness to the Resurrection. Jesus then entrusted her with the mission of proclaiming his resurrection to the Apostles, earning her the title "Apostle to the Apostles." Her story serves as a reminder of the vital role played by women in the early Christian community. Mary Magdalene is venerated as a Catholic saint and considered a model of discipleship, inspiring us all to follow in her footsteps. In this painting showcasing Saint Mary Magdalene, my objective was to convey the depth of emotions and profound memories she shared with Christ during his crucifixion. I aimed to capture both her external and internal beauty, emphasizing her unique identity as a woman and a devoted apostle of Christ.

  • “Saint Anthony of Padua inside Santa Maria Sopra Minerva Assisi - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

Saint Anthony of Padua, a follower of St. Francis of Assisi, was widely celebrated and known for his reputation as a miracle worker. In fact, he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII on January 16, 1946. In art, he is often depicted holding a book, a heart, a flame, a lily, or the child Jesus. Some of his authentic writings include sermons for Sundays and feast days, which were published in three volumes in 1979. The defining principle of Saint Anthony's life was his dedication to following Christ and leaving everything else behind. He consistently responded with renewed zeal and self-sacrifice to God's calls for him to fulfill His plans. Despite feeling hesitant, Anthony accepted the call to speak at an ordination where no one else was prepared. His years of prayer, Scripture reading, and service had prepared him to allow the Spirit to use his talents. His sermon was so astounding that those who expected an unprepared speech were amazed by the Spirit's power to give him the right words. Anthony was recognized as an exceptional man of prayer, a great scholar of Scripture and theology, and a prolific orator. He became the first friar to teach theology to other friars. On June 13, he fell seriously ill and requested to be taken back to Padua, where he eventually passed away after receiving the last sacraments. Saint Anthony, who was known as the finder of lost objects and causes, found himself by completely losing himself to the providence of God.

  • “Rio de le Romite, in the Dorsoduro district of Venice”… <br />

As standard fare, my fellow Pilgrim Patrick and I took off out of the starting gate with the notion to capture the entirety of Venice in half of a day on foot. We covered exactly 8.3 miles walking, but with so much adrenaline, we could have doubled it into the nighttime. Our itinerary included Basilica’s, canals, bridges, gondolas, and anything resembling Venetian culture, oh, and a stop for lunch. Basilica dei Frari was foremost and Chiesa di San Geremia to visit St. Lucy. In the maze that Venice presents, GPS navigation only works occasionally on this crowded water complexity. The shutters on our cameras seemed permanently depressed as we desperately tried to capture everything we possibly could in such a short window of time, as we had to be at the waterside restaurant by 7:00 pm. The description of this image begins in 1693 when the Romite Hermits erected a small church dedicated to Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, with an adjacent convent. Father Cavanis later installed a ‘female school of charity,’ entrusted in 1863 to the Canossian nuns who are still present on the spot. Always the destination of painters and artists, the Rio delle Romite preserves its original and evocative atmosphere which remains unchanged. It was a Bellissimo Spring day, and of course, we stopped for an Aperitivo which I also fell in love with on this replete journey. We artfully meandered the narrow walkways and canals with a keen rhythm and capture of all that was superior. Not a thought of distance occurred in our surreptitious mission of Venice. We finally made it by dusk to our waterway restaurant Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise, which was authentic and excellent. The finest shrimp I have experienced, grateful speeches emanated the tiny venue. Melancholy gratification filled the ambiance as we said our final farewells to Italy and the wonderful new friendships and experiences we shared on this Pilgrimage of a lifetime!

  • “The Radiant Evening Glow of the Cathedral of Orvieto”… <br />

Orvieto is one of the most striking, memorable, and enjoyable hill towns in central Italy. Less than 90 minutes from Rome, Orvieto sits majestically high above the valley floor atop a big chunk of volcanic stone called tufa and overlooking cypress-dotted Umbrian plains and vineyards. The ancient city rewards one with a peaceful and historical stroll back in time to the days of the Etruscans, who built this clifftop village over 2000 years ago for protection from their enemies. The ancient Etruscan wall still stands today presenting colorful cliffside views, and protecting the famous Duomo di Orvieto, the Palazzo del Popolo, and other antique treasures. The 14th Century Duomo was constructed to provide a home for the “Corporal of Bolsena”, a miracle that occurred in 1263 in the nearby town of Bolsena. A traveling priest who had doubts about the truth of transubstantiation found that his Host was bleeding so much that it stained the altar cloth. The cloth is now stored in the “Chapel of the Corporal” inside the cathedral. It’s amazing to turn the corner only to view, stop, and stare as the majestic Cathedral slowly rises to touch the heavens above. In Orvieto Saint Thomas Aquinas completed many of his great works. By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor.

This image was realized while approaching Chiesa Nuova (New Church), of the angelic shrine nearby. As I entered the quaint Bellissimo church, a Franciscan Monk working inside saw me and without reluctance, rose from his desk and graced me with a half-hour tour speaking entirely in Italian. He never hesitated and he never assumed that I was not fluent; yet, he continued to entrust me with every detail. This diminutive church appeared as a mighty Basilica found in the grand populations of Roma, Milano, and Firenze Italia. As we ventured about, he explained every nuance, even the crypt where Saint Francis’ parents reside. Upon completion of the tour, he graciously shook my hand, extended a gentle embrace, and bestowed a blessing in Italian. While not completely understanding his expression of the Italian language, I parted with gratitude and amazement …yet, somehow, I understood his every word. “Three things are too wonderful for me, yes, four I cannot understand.” Proverbs 30:18

  • “The Moors ring the bell at the top of the Clock Tower in Piazza San Marco Venice”…<br />

On Ascension Week and the Epiphany, carved figures of the four Magi join the Moors hourly, emerging from the clock face and bowing to the Virgin Mary above them. An angel raises a trumpet in recognition of them, and the Magi bow in return. The Clock Tower in Venice is an early Renaissance building on the north side of the Piazza San Marco, at the entrance to the Merceria. It comprises a tower, which contains the clock, and lower buildings on each side. It adjoins the eastern end of the Procuratie Vecchie. Both the tower and the clock date from the last decade of the 15th century, though the mechanism of the clock has subsequently been much altered. It was placed where the clock would be visible from the waters of the lagoon and give notice to every one of the wealth and glory of Venice. The clock tower is topped by two bronze figures who strike the bell hourly. Although they were originally designated as giants, their dark patina lent them the nickname “Moors.” A relief of the winged lion of St. Mark, patron saint, and symbol of Venice, stands on an open book below the Moors. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands one level down, above the massive clock face. The clock was intentionally designed to sit high enough in the square to be protected from Venice’s waters and to be visible from the canal. Meandering outside on the rooftop above St Mark's Basilica, I became mesmerized by Piazza San Marco below and the multitude of historic artwork residing on high. As the evening sun descended with a fire in the sky, the Moors were called once again to ring the bell reminding all of the romantic Venetian history, and a siren call of utopian futures here in La Serenissima, the ‘Most Serene,’ Veneto.

  • "The return of Francis, a penitent man, contemplating his future in the Church"...<br />

Francis of Assisi was a poor little man who astounded and inspired the Church by taking the gospel literally—not in a narrow fundamentalist sense, but by actually following all that Jesus said and did, joyfully, without limit, and without a sense of self-importance. The first change Francis experienced was his discovery of the value of the human person, irrespective of wealth, or social standing. He began to feel a deep inner kinship with the whole of humanity, but especially with the poor and the outcast. This new understanding of the human person is fundamentally identical to that found in the Gospels. So in the spring of 1205, he enlisted in Walter's army and set forth for Puglia, in southern Italy. But God had other plans, and Francis did not travel far. As soon as he reached the nearby city of Spoleto, Francis had a very strange dream. God appeared to him and ordered him to return home. Amid the bewilderment of his friends, Francis left all and made his way back to Assisi. This image of Francis on his horse in front of his eventual Basilica represents the contemplation of his growing faith. His search for conversion led him to the ancient church at San Damiano. While he was praying there, he heard Christ on the crucifix speak to him, "Francis, repair my church." Francis assumed this meant the crumbling building he was in. He later realized it was his call to rebuild the entire Church.  He read the command to the rich young man to sell all his good and give to the poor, the order to the apostles to take nothing on their journey, and the demand to take up the cross daily. "Here is our rule," Francis said -- as simple, and as seemingly impossible, as that. He was going to do what no one thought possible anymore -- live by the Gospel.

Daniel 10: 5-6 “As I looked up, I saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of fine gold around his waist. His body was like chrysolite, his face shone like lightning, his eyes were like fiery torches, his arms and feet looked like burnished bronze, and the sound of his voice was like the roar of a multitude.” Genesis 1:27 “God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Since early childhood, my fascination with the face of Christ resulted in a multitude of sketches, drawings, and photographs. Today, my mind’s eye continues this perception in wonderment. I yearn to see, feel, and touch this beatific vision. Blessed with humble skills, this is my current vision after three years of introspection and change of the face of Christ. I know that in heaven the just will see God by direct intuition, clearly and distinctly. Scripture and theology tell us that the blessed see God face to face. And because this vision is immediate and direct, it is also exceedingly clear and distinct. The blessed see God, not merely according to the measure of His likeness imperfectly reflected in creation, but they see Him as He is, after the manner of His Being. 1 Corinthians 13:12 “At present, we are looking at a confused reflection in a mirror; then, we shall see face to face; now, I have only glimpses of knowledge; then, I shall recognize God as he has recognized me.”

After a profound spiritual experience during Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and an awe-inspiring tour of the Vatican, my friend and fellow pilgrim, Patrick, and I found ourselves uplifted during our lunchtime conversation. We set our sights on the enchanting Piazza del Popolo, with the renowned Caravaggio paintings housed in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo calling to us. On my previous attempts, these masterpieces, "Crucifixion of Peter" and "Conversion of Saint Paul," seemed elusive, always obscured by a security guard who would promptly close the chapel door and turn off the lights. However, this time, luck was on our side. As we approached the Basilica, we discovered it undergoing reconstruction. Once inside, we were met with darkness and disarray, making locating the chapel challenging. Suddenly, a ray of light pierced through the shadows, revealing the Caravaggio paintings steps away and we swiftly captured the moment with our cameras. Alas, our euphoria was short-lived as a mysterious guard promptly turned off the lights again. Despite the fleeting encounter, we left the Basilica with our hearts racing from the exhilarating experience. Immersing ourselves further in the atmosphere of Rome, we stumbled upon the picturesque neighborhood of Lucina and settled into a charming bistro for an aperitivo. To our delight, the ancient Basilica of St. Lawrence, dating back to 366 AD, stood adjacent to our table, beckoning us to explore its history and beauty. Stepping into the Basilica, a brilliant stream of sunlight bathed a majestic angel statue with a heavenly glow, leaving me startled by its ethereal beauty, reminded me of life's preciousness, and how moments of disappointment lead to profound understanding and respite. The angel appeared to reach out, touching the hand of Christ conveying a message of illumination and enlightenment.

This painting by Dino Carbetta showcases the enchanting beauty of the Ancient Orvieto roses after a refreshing rainfall. Orvieto, a charming hill town in central Italy, is a must-visit destination that is less than 90 minutes away from Rome. Perched atop a massive volcanic rock called tufa, the town offers breathtaking views of Umbrian plains and vineyards dotted with cypress trees. A stroll through Orvieto is a peaceful journey back in time to the days of the Etruscans, who built this clifftop village over two thousand years ago for protection from their enemies. The colorful cliffside views of the ancient Etruscan wall, which still stands today, offer a glimpse of the town's rich history. The famous Duomo di Orvieto, the Palazzo del Popolo, and other antique treasures are also protected by this wall. In 1209 Saint Francis composed a simple rule for his friars, the "Primitive Rule," which came from verses in the Bible. The rule was "To follow our Lord Jesus Christ’s teachings and walk in his footsteps.” This large monument of Italy’s Patron Saint (St. Francis of Assisi) is visually recognizable between the Basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme where we began our pilgrimage and San Giovanni in Laterano where we later enjoyed Mass. It was inaugurated in 1927 to commemorate the seventh centenary of his death. The statue portrays the visit of St Francis to Rome, leading his first eleven followers to seek permission from Pope Innocent III to find a new religious Order. A number of the Pope's counselors considered the mode of life proposed by Francis as unsafe and impractical. However, the Pope dreamt he saw Francis holding up the Basilica of St. John Lateran (the cathedral of Rome, thus the 'home church' of all Christendom) and decided to endorse Francis' Order. This occurred, according to tradition, on April 16, 1210, and constituted the official founding of the Franciscan Order. Artist Giuseppe Tonnini sculpted the bronze monument. An inscription taken from the eleventh canto, of Paradise of the Divine Comedy, can be seen at the base, in which Dante makes references to Saint Francis: “Between Topino's stream and that which flows down from the hill the blessed Ubaldo chose, from a high peak there hangs a fertile slope; from there Perugia feels both heat and cold at Porta Sole, while behind it sorrow Nocera and Gualdo under their hard yoke. From this hillside, where it abates its rise, a sun was born into the world, much like this sun when it is climbing from the Ganges. Therefore let him who names this site not say, Assisi, which would be to say too little, but Orient, if he would name it rightly.”

  • “Evening Rain Over Positano - Painting by Dino Carbetta”… <br />

The last day of three in Positano was an up and down day of light, dark, rain, cold, and more light. I began the day with a glorious photo session at sunrise, then took a rainy ferry to Amalfi and was thrilled with the indoor images from the Duomo. The journey back on the ferry was windy and rainy with an extreme cold front coming in. I continued to take pictures during the steady downpour as we approached Positano. The combination of the fog and rain made it seem impossible to capture a good image. But, to my surprise, this very combination created a surreal and mystical view of the colorful seaside village. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a prominent aspect of Positano’s cultural, religious, and architectural landscape, and is still pronounced in the rain. The ancient church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. I was taken aback at the thought of cold weather in the southernmost seaside town of my Italian journey in late May. However, the waiter who I met the first evening while photographing the sunset, informed me that most of the residents close their shops, restaurants, and hotels during the winter months because of the cold and lack of tourists. Not having long pants or a heavy coat, dinner at the terrace restaurant of the hotel was frigid, but they had a propane heater and blanket for each diner. However, with all wet and cold comes the light, and just as the evening came to a close….the rain stopped and the sun appeared again…just in time for a perfect sunset. Occasionally, one gets lucky and just happens to stay at the perfect location. And, Positano performed remarkably well once again and took the award for the most photogenic village in Italy. The weather conditions created a Bellisimo photograph, the final painting just slightly enhanced its mystic beauty

There are three main doors. At the center, is the monumental door in green bronze made by Antonio Maraini, which was placed here in 1931; to its right is the new Holy Door, made of golden bronze, created by the sculptor Enrico Manfrini and erected for the Jubilee of the year 2000. The central door shows episodes relating to the lives and preaching’s of Saints Peter and Paul. A large cross with inlaid silver and embellished with stones of lapis lazuli overlays the door from side to side. The cross on the drawing represents a cross motif in curlicued silver, and this has on its plaques in lapis lazuli. Four on the horizontal bar show the symbols of the Evangelists, and on the vertical bar are the symbols of the Apostles. The reliefs (left to right) on the door show scenes from the lives, apostolates, and martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul, according to the wishes of the abbot of the monastery. Saint Anthony of Padua was a devoted follower of St. Francis of Assisi and was celebrated for his reputation as a miracle worker. His exceptional character and unwavering dedication to following Christ earned him the title of Doctor of the Church, declared by Pope Pius XII on January 16, 1946. In depictions of Saint Anthony, he is often shown holding a book, a heart, a flame, a lily, or the child Jesus. His published sermons for Sundays and feast days are a testament to his authenticity and commitment to his faith. Throughout his life, Saint Anthony remained steadfast in his devotion to God, responding with renewed zeal and self-sacrifice to fulfill His plans. Despite his initial hesitancy, he accepted the call to speak at an ordination where no one else was prepared. His years of prayer, Scripture reading, and service had equipped him to allow the Spirit to use his talents, delivering an astounding sermon that left his audience in awe of the Spirit's power. Saint Anthony was revered for his exceptional prayer life, theological scholarship, and oratory skills, becoming the first friar to teach theology to other friars. He requested to be taken back to Padua when he fell seriously ill on June 13 and eventually passed away after receiving the last sacraments. Saint Anthony, known for his ability to find lost objects and causes, found himself by surrendering completely to God's providence. As a tribute to his legacy and the ancient beauty of Saint Anthony's Basilica in Padua, I painted a representation of him embracing the infant Jesus. I pray that it is a fitting tribute to his contribution to our faith.

Several references in the Synoptic Gospels of Jesus predict his death, the first two occasions building up to the final prediction of his crucifixion. In Mark, Jesus predicts his death three times. This Gospel also contains verses in which Jesus predicts his Passion. The first, is near Caesarea Philippi, after Peter proclaims Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus tells his followers that "the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again". When Peter objects, Jesus tells him: "Get behind me, Satan! You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men". (Mark 8:31–33) Matthew 16:21–28:  Jesus "began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed ...". Luke 9:22–27 Jesus uses the occasion to teach them new things. The second warning appears in Mark 9:30–32, and Matthew 17:22–23: "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise." But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it. Matthew 20:17–19 specifically mentions crucifixion: Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified. On the third day, he will be raised to life!" The fourth prediction in Matthew 26:1–2 is, "As you know, the Passover is two days away and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."   • “Positano Explosion of Colors Before Sunset” …<br />

After an exhilarating drive along the high cliffs on the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento down to Positano, I found myself in sensory overload with its beauty and photogenic appeal. Circling the entire village and its cliffside three times on Positano’s only street, I finally found the parking garage about 2/3rds up the facing village in this image. The climb down the winding road and steep staircases made for quite a workout in the hot late May sun. Reaching the beach and marina, I forgot about my exhaustion and could not capture enough of Positano’s plush beauty; however, the substantial number of tourists and the bright sun did not allow for ideal conditions. Walking the length of the beach, I found a very, very steep staircase leading straight up to a large veranda at the Albergo California. Taking an exhaustive seat on a plush lounge chair with a perfect view to watch the sunset behind the Amalfi Cliffs, I was taken back by a pleasant Italian waiter from the hotel offering a towel, iced water, and drinks for the evening. I expressed that I was not staying at the hotel, but he did not seem to mind and proceeded to educate me on the culture of this historic resort village. The sunset was coy and did not appear to cooperate, but during opportune moments it mystified the cloud arrangement and contributed just enough light and color to satisfy a weary photographer. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a prominent aspect of Positano’s cultural, religious, and architectural landscape. Strategically located in the center of town tucked between the descending mountains dripping with multicolored dwellings, and the transcendent blue sea, the church’s brilliant majolica tiled cupola is one of the town’s iconic symbols. The ancient church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1159. Santa Maria keeps a blessed and watchful eye over Positano and welcomes all to this iconic beautiful seaside village.

  • “Joust of the Archidao Cortona Flag Flyers” …<br />

Every year, a procession of three hundred or more people wearing wonderful medieval costumes and many riders on their horse’s parade through Cortona's historic center. The competition known as the Giostra dell'Archidado commemorates the wedding of Francesco Casali, Lord of Cortona, and the noblewoman Antonia Salimbeni of Sienna, which took place in 1397. The crossbowmen from Cortona's five quarters, "Quintieri", compete for a golden arrow. The contest is held in Piazza Signorelli. Flag throwing (or flag tossing) is often a major part of the historical costume festivals that are one of the great attractions of Tuscany and, indeed, of all of Italy. The performers, known as Sbandieratori, usually young men but with an increasing number of young ladies taking part, dress in medieval costumes and are usually accompanied by drummers (Tamburi) and sometimes trumpeters (Trombettieri). Skills range from good to truly excellent. The younger participants engage in synchronized flags by tossing and catching their flags, while the truly skilled conduct amazing and beautiful exercises involving simultaneously throwing two flags to two partners in their team. I was fortunate to arrive in Cortona from Roma on Sunday festival’s last festival. Capturing the quick-moving Giostra, band members, and soaring flags was an adventure. I am positive that in the year 1397 it was quite dangerous, but I also found danger in such close quarters and so many moving, and colorful parts.

  • “Saint Luke the Evangelist – Painting by Dino Carbetta” …<br />

Luke is one of the Four Evangelists—the four traditionally ascribed authors of the canonical gospels. He is the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, which would mean Luke contributed over a quarter of the text of the New Testament, more than any other author. In the two books, he shows the parallel between the life of Christ and that of the Church. He is the only Gentile Christian among the Gospel writers. Tradition holds him to be a native of Antioch, and Paul calls him “our beloved physician.” His Gospel was probably written between 70 and 85 A.D. Luke appears in Acts during Paul’s second journey, remains at Philippi for several years until Paul returns, accompanies Paul to Jerusalem, and remains near him when he is imprisoned in Caesarea. He accompanied Paul on the dangerous journey to Rome where he was a faithful companion. And after everyone else deserts Paul in his final imprisonment and suffering, it is Luke who remains with Paul to the end: "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). Luke also has a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, especially Mary. It is only in Luke's gospel that we hear the story of the Annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth including the Magnificat, the Presentation, and the story of Jesus' disappearance in Jerusalem. It is Luke that we must thank for the Scriptural parts of the Hail Mary: "Hail Mary full of grace" spoken at the Annunciation and "Blessed are you and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus." Ancient traditions also acknowledge Luke as the founder of Christian iconography, making him a patron of artists as well as doctors and other medical caregivers. His relics reside in the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua, Italy. Reading Luke's gospel gives a good idea of his character as one who loved the poor, who wanted the door to God's kingdom opened to all, who respected women, and who saw hope in God's mercy for everyone.
