L'occhio luminescente di Cristo guarda Santa Lucia - Dipinto di Dino Carbetta
“The Luminescent Eye of Christ Gazes Upon Saint Lucia - Painting by Dino Carbetta”…
Saint Lucia, the virgin and martyr of Syracuse in Sicily, is celebrated on December 13th. Born into wealth and nobility in the year 283, Lucy, like the early martyrs, consecrated her virginity to God, aspiring to dedicate all her possessions to serving the poor. An arranged marriage set for three years was postponed. Lucy, ardently devoted to her faith, prayed at the tomb of Saint Agatha, leading to the miraculous healing of her mother's prolonged hemorrhagic ailment. Her mother then consented to Lucy's desire to live a life devoted to God. However, Lucy's rejected suitor, Paschasius, betrayed her as a Christian. Despite the governor's attempts to force her into prostitution, Lucy remained steadfast, even when hitched to a team of oxen. In frustration, the governor ordered her execution. Subjected to brutal torture, including the removal of her eyes, Lucy was surrounded by wood and set afire, but the flames quickly extinguished. She prophesied against her persecutors and met her demise through a stabbing. Paschasius faced the foretold punishment, and upon hearing this, the governor ordered Lucy's eyes gouged out. Astonishingly, Lucy had already removed her eyes to discourage her persistent suitor who admired them. When her body was prepared for burial, her eyes were miraculously restored. This, along with the meaning of her name, "light," led to her patronage of eyes, the blind, and eye ailments. Today, her relics rest in Venice's church of San Geremia. Inspired by the heroism of earlier virgin martyrs, Lucy remained unwavering in her faith, following the example of the carpenter she recognized as the Son of God. She is revered as the patroness of eyesight. In the words of St. Lucy, "To God's servants, the right words will not be wanting, for the Holy Spirit speaks in us... All who live piously and chastely are temples of the Holy Spirit."
