Captures the essence of a pivotal moment in the life of Italy's Patron Saint, St. Francis of Assisi. In 1209, Saint Francis authored the "Primitive Rule," a simple yet profound guideline for his friars, drawn directly from the teachings of Jesus Christ: "To follow our Lord Jesus Christ’s teachings and walk in his footsteps.” This monumental tribute stands as a visual landmark between the Basilicas of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, where our pilgrimage began, and San Giovanni in Laterano, where Mass brought spiritual fulfilment. Inaugurated in 1927, commemorating the seventh centenary of St. Francis' death, the statue vividly depicts his historic visit to Rome. Accompanied by his first eleven followers, he sought Pope Innocent III's permission to establish a new religious Order. Pope Innocent III dreamt of Francis holding up the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome and the 'home church' of all Christendom. Convinced of the divine endorsement, the Pope sanctioned Francis' Order on April 16, 1210, marking the official founding of the Franciscan Order. Renowned artist Giuseppe Tonnini skillfully sculpted the bronze monument, its base adorned with an inscription from the eleventh canto of Paradise of the Divine Comedy. In this poetic reference, Dante pays homage to Saint Francis, emphasizing the sacred significance of the location: “Between Topino's stream and that which flows down from the hill the blessed Ubaldo chose... From this hillside, where it abates its rise, a sun was born into the world, much like this sun when it is climbing from the Ganges. Therefore let him who names this site not say, Assisi, which would be to say too little, but Orient, if he would name it rightly.” Dino's snowy painting captures St. Francis' timeless spirit, inviting viewers to reflect on his profound legacy and enduring teachings.
