“Hail, Queen of Peace - Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore”…

The first major stop on my first visit to Rome was The Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major, which reigns as an authentic jewel in the crown of Roman churches. Its beautiful treasures are of inestimable value and represent the Church's role as the cradle of Christian artistic civilization in Rome. For nearly sixteen centuries, Santa Maria Maggiore has held its position as a Marian shrine par excellence and has been a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world who have come to the Eternal City to experience the beauty, grandeur, and holiness of the Basilica. The numerous treasures contained in the museum render Santa Maria Maggiore a place where art and spirituality combine in a perfect union, offering visitors a unique experience in contemplating the great works of a man inspired by God. The transcendent and inspiring Regina Pacis and the Christ child is a 20th-century statue of the ‘Queen of Peace’ commissioned by Pope Benedict XV in commemoration of the end of the First World War. “Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.”
