Porte Anteriori 24-26-28 Lungo Via Roma Cortona – Una Fotografia di Dino Carbetta
Front Doors 24-26-28 Along Via Roma, Cortona – A Photograph by Dino Carbetta
Before setting foot on my one-month sojourn through Italy, I disciplined myself daily—walking, running, climbing—three to four hours at a time, preparing both body and spirit for the arduous terrain that awaited. Strapped with a 20-pound camera bag, I believed myself ready for the journey. Yet no training could have prepared me for Italy’s breathless hills, its sun-drenched stones, or the merciless inclines that crown Cortona’s noble ridges. This photograph was taken along one of the most formidable strade in Cortona, where the gradient boldly challenges gravity itself, reaching fifteen percent or more. What appears skewed is not. The architecture here bends to the land with graceful defiance—an age-old dance between stone and slope. The three front doors—24, 26, and 28—stand like sentinels of endurance and history, nestled in the angled face of Via Roma. To compose this image, I had to stand nearly sideways, attempting to find level ground where none exists. Yet beauty, as it often does in Italy, softens the burden. Geraniums spill from window boxes like prayers whispered down the alleyways, their blooms a balm for the weary and a hymn of welcome to the faithful traveler. "From a high Tuscan hill, fifty miles from Florence between Arezzo and Perugia rises the equally ancient and noble city of Cortona..." wrote a 17th-century soul, and still it rings true. The city stretches long toward the sun, watching over the golden plains below, her flanks embraced by valleys and her back pressed firmly to fruitful mountains. Today, Cortona remains a beacon of history and grace, a quiet cornerstone in the heart of Tuscany from which one may wander to Florence, Siena, Perugia, Assisi, and beyond. But perhaps its deepest gift is to those who climb it—step by aching step—where each doorway becomes a threshold to wonder, and each breath a litany of gratitude.
