Il sole della sera illumina gli Angeli a guardia delle Arcibasilica Papale di San Giovanni in Laterano - Roma
“The evening sun illuminates the Angels guarding the Papal Archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano – Rome”…
Amidst the enchanting beauty of Rome, we discovered a timeless moment suffused with familiarity and grandeur as we embarked on our Pilgrimage, attending the first evening Mass. The sun's radiant descent through the high windows, casting warm hues upon the grand hallways, where priests from around the world offered the Sacrament of Confession during the day, set the stage for a profound experience. In that sacred space, I seized a rare opportunity to partake in the Sacrament with an Italian Priest, his words resonating in his native tongue, a truly blessed encounter. The Basilica, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, holds a unique significance as the first among the four major basilicas of Rome. Constructed by the great Emperor Constantine in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano is a living testament to the early roots of Christianity and Catholicism in Rome. It was in this hallowed sanctuary that my inspiration took flight, as I beheld a procession of tiny cherubic angels adorning the archways of a long, narrow hallway that led to the sacred and Holy Door of the Archbasilica. Each cherub bore a unique countenance and expression, a testament to their individuality. In their humble service, they upheld the archways, symbolizing the protection of the wondrous souls who sought solace within the Basilica's walls. Amidst this awe-inspiring sight, a lone priest, his silhouette etched against the setting sun, emerged from the hallway, having spent his day administering the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This moment captured the profound sense of reverence and inspiration that the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano imparts to all who enter its sacred precincts, an experience that speaks to the enduring spiritual legacy of Rome, a city that has witnessed the passage of time and faith for countless transcendent millennia.
