Madonna del Carmelo - Dipinto di Dino Carbetta
“Our Lady of Mount Carmel - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or Virgin of Carmel, is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order, particularly within the Catholic Church. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to the mid-13th century. They built amid their hermitages a chapel which they dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, whom they conceived of in chivalric terms as the "Lady of the place." Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has centered on the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Brown Scapular. Traditionally, Mary is said to have given the Scapular to an early Carmelite named Saint Simon Stock (1165-1265). The liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on 16 July. Of the many sacramentals that Catholics may avail themselves of, the Brown Scapular or the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Scapular is one of the most venerable. Suffice to say that, along with devotions like the Miraculous Medal, Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s gift to St. Simon Stock is perhaps the most widely disseminated (and worn) sacramentals of Catholics. The Carmelites were known from early on as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” The title suggests that they saw Mary not only as “mother,” but also as “sister.” The word sister is a reminder that Mary is very close to us. She is the daughter of God and therefore can help us be authentic daughters and sons of God. She also can help us grow in appreciation of being sisters and brothers to one another. She leads us to a new realization that all human beings belong to the family of God. When such a conviction grows, there is hope that the human race can find its way to peace. I was sent many Brown Scapulars during my recent illness and found comfort in its powerful meaning, presence, and history.
