Madonna degli Angeli - La Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli Assisi - Dipinto di Dino Carbetta
“Madonna of the Angels - The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli Assisi - Painting by Dino Carbetta” …
Nestled just three-quarters of a mile from Assisi lies the serene town of Portiuncula, a place imbued with profound significance. Its heart is the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, where a humble little church holds the essence of Saint Francis of Assisi's calling. In the year 1208, it was within these hallowed walls that Saint Francis discovered his divine purpose. He spent most of his earthly existence here, and in 1211, the Benedictines entrusted him with the stewardship of the small chapel of St. Mary of the Angels, known as the Portiuncula, meaning 'a little portion' of land, where the first Franciscan convent was established. It was under the sheltering wings of the Portiuncula that Saint Francis received the sacred vows of Saint Clare. On October 3, 1226, Saint Francis bequeathed the chapel to his brothers, entrusting it to their faithful care. At the age of 42, Saint Francis embarked on a solitary retreat to the remote Mount Alvernia. Here, he prepared himself through 40 days of fasting and prayer for the feast of Saint Michael, the mightiest of God's angels. On the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Saint Francis was graced with the Sacred Wounds, mirroring those of Our Lord, upon his hands, feet, and side. These divine wounds remained upon his body, bleeding continuously for two more years until his passing in 1226. In 1930, a golden-plated statue of the Madonna Degli Angeli, sculpted by Colasanti and crafted by Marinelli Artistic Foundry, was placed atop the Basilica's façade, radiating its sacred presence. During our 2019 Pilgrimage, we were blessed to explore this deeply reverent Basilica, where the golden exterior of Mother Mary, when kissed by the sun's rays, seems almost translucent. In my artistic endeavor, I sought to capture this mystical radiance, echoing the harmonious and glorious light that bathes the Madonna degli Angeli.
