“Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro’s Story - “Viva Cristo Rey”—Long live Christ the King! – Painting by Dino Carbetta” ...
These were the last words of Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro as he faced the firing squad, offering his life in defiance of tyranny. His story is a profound testament to the power of faith. Born into a devout family in Guadalupe de Zacatecas, Mexico, in 1891, Miguel Pro entered the Jesuits in 1911. Religious persecution soon forced him to flee to Spain, where he continued his studies, and he was ordained in Belgium in 1925. Returning to Mexico, he served secretly, risking his life to celebrate the Eucharist and minister to the faithful. In 1927, he and his brother were falsely accused of attempting to assassinate Mexico’s president. While his brother was spared, Father Pro was condemned to die. On November 23, 1927, Father Pro stood before his executioners, arms outstretched like Christ, forgiving them with his final breath, "Viva Cristo Rey!" His martyrdom became a rallying cry for Mexican Catholics, and his funeral was a bold demonstration of faith against the government’s efforts to silence the Church. This powerful moment is captured in the painting by Dino Carbetta, which immortalizes the spirit of Father Pro’s final act of faith. Carbetta’s artistry invites us to enter the scene, feeling the weight of the martyr’s sacrifice and the triumph of his soul. Father Pro’s legacy endures, and his beatification by Pope John Paul II in 1988 recognized the strength of his witness. The deep-rooted faith of the Mexican people, sustained by martyrs like Father Pro, ensured that even after decades of persecution, the Church would thrive. Pope John Paul II's visits to Mexico, celebrated with open-air Masses before thousands, testified to this truth. Through Carbetta’s artistic tribute, we see not just a historical martyr, but the eternal victory of Christ the King.
